Possible Accidental Shooting Death Prompts Gun Safety Warning

LLANO COUNTY —(1-7-16)   Preliminary reports indicate the shooting death of a 21-year-old man the day after Christmas might have been an accident, according to Llano County Sheriff’s Office investigators.
The incident happened sometime before 7 p.m. Dec. 26 in the 100 block of Harold Drive in the Long Mountain Estate subdivision in Llano County.
Dakota Sutter, 21, of Buchanan Dam suffered a wound to the upper torso area caused by a single-action .22-caliber revolver.
He was transported to Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock by ambulance and pronounced dead later that night by Williamson County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Dane Johnston, according to the report.
The victim’s body was then taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
The Llano County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into the incident and gathered evidence from at least two other people, who told deputies they were at the scene at the time.
“Apparently, a pistol was dropped and discharged, and it struck the victim in the upper body,” said Llano County Sheriff’s Lt. Glen Williams.
According to the report, an adult male and two other individuals, including the victim, were examining the gun when the shooting occurred.
“(The gun owner) was showing the gun. He was going to holster it. Somehow, it got mishandled and dropped,” he said. “We believe the hammer was down all the way against the firing pin.
“It’s a live round in that gun if the hammer is all the way forward,” Williams said. “The firing pin will be touching the primer, so a good jar will touch it off.”
On Dec. 29, a preliminary autopsy report appeared to corroborate the witness’ accounts, Williams said.
“It appears to be an accidental shooting,” he said. “We’re not going to (officially) call it an accident until we get the full report.”
Williams added the incident has prompted a gun safety reminder.
“Be extremely careful with a firearm. Things could go wrong when you’re simply just trying to put it up,” Williams said.
Gun owners who conceal or open carry loaded handguns should also pay heed to the potential danger.
“If you have a concealed or open carry weapon, of course you don’t want to carry around an empty gun, but make sure you’re safe when you’re home or out in public,” Williams said. “If you’re going to show it to somebody, make sure it’s unloaded. It’s a tragedy, but somebody could learn from it.”
No charges have been filed. The final autopsy is expected in six to eight weeks.

Dubuque police: Shooting of 2-year-old appears accidental

Dubuque, Iowa  - (1-7-16)   Dubuque police said today that evidence thus far supports accidental gunfire causing a gunshot wound to a toddler’s face.
Police responded at 11:43 p.m. Sunday to 942 Main St. Two-year-old Jeremiah D.B. Horsley was found with a gunshot wound to the face at that residence, where he lives. He was taken to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City for treatment, and Lt. Scott Baxter said the boy was in stable condition Wednesday.
Baxter said that while the investigation is ongoing, indications thus far support a theory of accidental shooting.
“We still can’t say officially if it was accidental,” he said.
Baxter said the investigation has been prolonged by interviewing the multiple adult and child witnesses at the scene. He said even if the cause is deemed to be accidental, there still is a potential for criminal charges to be brought in relation to the shooting.
“We have to determine who owned the weapon, how it was accessed and whether it was negligence,” he said. “We’re not ruling out the possibility of criminal charges.”

Sheriff’s Office: Man accidentally shoots himself with pistol — that had been reported stolen the night before

Baker, La.  (1-7-16)  A Baker man was arrested Thursday after he accidentally shot himself with a gun authorities identified as stolen earlier in the day.

Jeron Jervell Brooks, 18, is accused of stealing an $800 9 mm Sig Sauer pistol Saturday from a man who parked his 2010 GMC pickup truck at 7321 Juno Drive around 1 a.m. and left it unlocked, an East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office report says.

The same deputy who investigated the truck burglary responded to an accidental shooting at around 10:30 a.m. at 816 Kennon Drive, a block away from where the pistol had been stolen and found Brooks, who told investigators he accidentally shot himself in the hand when he was trying to unload the gun, the report says.

Brooks told the deputy he found the gun in the woods, but the detective noticed the gun was clean and in good working condition, the report says.

The deputy confiscated the gun and discovered that its serial number matched the one stolen from the pickup truck, according to the report.

Brooks, who was treated and released from the hospital, was arrested at home Thursday morning.

Brooks changed his story and told deputies he had gotten the gun from a younger man in the neighborhood at around 10 p.m. Friday, the report says.

The victim told deputies, however, that he had not parked his truck on Juno Drive until 1 a.m. Saturday, the report says.

Brooks, 816 Kennon Drive, Baker, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of illegal use of a weapon, theft of a firearm and automobile burglary over $200.

'Untimely' Death of 18-Year-Old Woman in Hartford Undetermined: Medical Examiner

Cromwell, CT. - (1-7-16)  An 18 year old Cromwell woman was shot and killed late Tuesday night on Broad Street in Hartford.
Natashalie Hoy’s heartbroken family is searching for answers, while police try and figure out if this is suicide, accidental or a homicide.
Investigators are calling the teen’s death untimely.
Police have not arrested anyone in connection with Hoy’s death. Investigators have charged Hoy's friend, 21-year-old Torrick Maragh, with two counts of possession of a sawed off shot gun.
According to arrest papers, Maragh told detectives after the he and Hoy had an argument, Hoy shot herself with the shotgun. The teenager’s family tells NBC Connecticut that can't be possible.
Hartford police rushed to the basement of 1688 Broad Street late Tuesday night after a frantic 911 call.
911 caller: "If you're going to save her, you got to get here quick."
Arriving officers found Hoy lying on the ground bleeding from the throat.
According to the Medical Examiner, the teen died from a bullet to the neck, but it's unclear whether Hoy was the one to pull the trigger.
Maragh told the first officer on scene that Hoy, "shot herself."
According to the arrest warrant, Maragh said the two were initially fighting over a shotgun shell and Hoy had a knife in her hand. Maragh said he was able to confiscate the knife from Hoy before she ran out of the room. When she came back, Hoy straddled Maragh who was sitting on a bed and she had the shotgun pointed at her neck when it went off.
"She didn't kill herself. My daughter is beautiful. Beautiful daughter, she’s gone my baby girl is gone," Felix Hoy, Natashalie’s father, said.
Felix Hoy spent Thursday planning his first born's funeral at Deleon on Main Street in the Capitol City.
Hoy told NBC Connecticut, “I think I should have done more."
Hoy said he saw his daughter hours before the shooting. He delivered medicine and other items to her on Broad Street because she said she wasn't feeling well told her father she had paid a visit to Maragh earlier. But he said, Shalie wouldn't let him inside.
Hoy added, “Anyone that shoots themself in the head pops it in the mouth. Not going to shoot herself in the neck. Sounds kind of sketchy. I know my daughter. She was too happy."
Maragh was in Hartford superior court Thursday and was charged with gun possession.
According to arrest papers, he owns the gun that took Hoy's life and admitted he hid a second gun in the ceiling before police got to the scene.
Now Hoy's family is left searching for answers and holding onto memories of the teen they said was a senior at Prince Tech and wanted to work on cars.
“I treated her like my daughter and I'm always going to love her like my daughter, very beautiful person," Jacqueline Hoy, Natashalie’s step mother, told NBC Connecticut.

Lizzmarie Hoy, Natashalie's younger sister, said, “Whenever I needed her, whenever I had trouble, I knew where to go. She was just a phone call away when I needed her to help me through my problems."
In court the Judge stated based on circumstances that bond would be set at $800,000.
A GoFundMe account has been established to help the family with funeral arrangements.

Man accidentally shoots self in leg

EDEN, AZ. – (-17-16)  A 62-year-old man was hospitalized Sunday after he accidentally shot himself in his leg at his residence.

According to a Graham County Sheriff’s Office report, first responders were dispatched to 11013 West Eden Church Lane at about 3 p.m.

Upon arrival, a deputy discovered Mickey Bartlett on the floor of his living room with blood coming out of his lower left leg. A Pima officer applied pressure to Bartlett’s wound to help stop the bleeding until he was relieved by paramedics from Southwest Ambulance, who then treated Bartlett and transported him to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center. Pima Fire also responded to the scene to assist.

According to Bartlett’s statements to police, he was in the living room and forgot his gun was loaded. He then accidentally shot himself in his rear calf area. The injury was described as a through-and-through with an exit wound by a Pima officer.

Bartlett’s wife retrieved his Hi-Point 9-mm handgun for a deputy, who discovered it still had a loaded magazine with a round in its chamber. The deputy then cleared the firearm and secured it. A spent 9-mm shell casing was located in the kitchen/living room area, according to the report.

No charge planned in home gunshot incident

Joplin,  MO.  (1-7-16)   Joplin police have decided that no charge will be sought against a 26-year-old mother, one of whose three children, ages 6, 5 and 1, got a loaded firearm in her house on New Year's Day and fired the weapon.
Capt. Bob Higginbotham said police learned of the incident from the children's father the night of Jan. 1 when his children returned from a visit with their mother and the oldest child told him that his 18-month-old brother had pulled a gun down off a counter in their mother's home and fired a shot with it.
Higginbotham said the father told police that he called the children's mother and that she admitted to him that the gun indeed had been discharged in the home. Because of the mother having left for work in Tulsa, Oklahoma, investigators were not able to reach her by phone until Monday when she agreed to meet with them Tuesday at the residence where the incident took place.
The mother told them that the revolver had been left on top of her refrigerator and that she was in another room at the time and did not see which of the children obtained and discharged the weapon.
"Where the gun was, the 18-month-old could not have gotten to it," Higginbotham said. "We think one of the older children actually obtained the firearm and accidentally discharged it."
He said a round was retrieved from a wall of the house, but it is not known how close it might have come to striking any of the children. The gun had been given to the mother by the father for her protection. Higginbotham said it was his understanding that the mother indicated that she was getting rid of the gun in the wake of the incident.
Higginbotham said the matter has been referred to the Children's Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services, but no child endangerment charge will be sought.
"Could (the gun) have been (kept) safer? Yeah," Higginbotham said. "But I don't think it reaches to the point of endangerment, at least as far as successful prosecution goes."
