Sheriff’s Office: Man accidentally shoots himself with pistol — that had been reported stolen the night before

A Baker man was arrested Thursday after he accidentally shot himself with a gun authorities identified as stolen earlier in the day.

Baker, LA, (1-7-16)  Jeron Jervell Brooks, 18, is accused of stealing an $800 9 mm Sig Sauer pistol Saturday from a man who parked his 2010 GMC pickup truck at 7321 Juno Drive around 1 a.m. and left it unlocked, an East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office report says.

The same deputy who investigated the truck burglary responded to an accidental shooting at around 10:30 a.m. at 816 Kennon Drive, a block away from where the pistol had been stolen and found Brooks, who told investigators he accidentally shot himself in the hand when he was trying to unload the gun, the report says.

Brooks told the deputy he found the gun in the woods, but the detective noticed the gun was clean and in good working condition, the report says.

The deputy confiscated the gun and discovered that its serial number matched the one stolen from the pickup truck, according to the report.

Brooks, who was treated and released from the hospital, was arrested at home Thursday morning.

Brooks changed his story and told deputies he had gotten the gun from a younger man in the neighborhood at around 10 p.m. Friday, the report says.

The victim told deputies, however, that he had not parked his truck on Juno Drive until 1 a.m. Saturday, the report says.

Brooks, 816 Kennon Drive, Baker, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of illegal use of a weapon, theft of a firearm and automobile burglary over $200.
