Family grateful girl survived accidental shooting; grandmother makes first court appearance

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (1-20-16) – FOX 4 learned new details about an accidental shooting that left a 5-year-old girl injured, and her grandmother charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

The girl suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh, and is now recovering at home according to her uncle.

“I wish y`all could see her. She`s a sweetheart,” said Michael Barnett.

Two days after his niece was accidentally shot inside their south Kansas City home, Barnett is still breathing a big sigh of relief.

“Very thankful. Thankful for her life,” said Barnett.

He said that late Monday night was a routine one for him, his sister – 43-year-old Taprill Barnett, the child`s grandmother -- and two other young relatives.

“All of us were watching TV just in our bedrooms and the kids running back and forth,” Barnett recalled.

Moments later, he said they heard a loud pop.

“I panicked. It sounded like muffled, or a firecracker,” Barnett said.

Police say it wasn`t a firecracker, but a single gunshot that went off and hit the 5-year-old girl.

“She has a flesh wound and it didn`t hit the bone. God`s good,” said Barnett.

According to a police report, Taprill Barnett told detectives she was cleaning her gun and slid it under a couch when the young victim and her brother entered the living room. Barnett said when she left the room, she heard a pop, ran back to the living room and then saw her granddaughter had been shot.

“She was playing on the couch like she normally does and she looked behind or under a pillow,” Barnett said, saying the girl then found the gun.

He says his sister is a good woman and would never put her family in harm`s way. He says his sister recently bought the gun for her 20-year-old son.

“It was for when he turned 21. I mean he wanted it to be licensed and learn how to shoot. I don`t think my sister even knew the gun was here,” Barnett said.

Barnett says he doesn`t know which one of his relatives brought the gun into their home. He says his sister kept it locked in her car.

Taprill Barnett was arraigned on Wednesday and is in jail, held on a $10,000 bond. She’s due in court for a hearing on February 2.

Alleged accidental shooting results in death of Dayton man

Dayton, TX  (1-20-16)  A 20-year-old Dayton man is dead, the victim of an alleged accidental shooting on CR 4895 off of US 90 west of Dayton.
The incident that claimed the life of Justin Taylor Gonzales took place around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19. Deputies with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 911 call, which was first reported to be the accidental shooting of a 9-year-old boy.
“Evidently confusion from the scene and over the frantic 911 call resulted in this misinformation, which was, within minutes, corrected,” said Capt. Ken DeFoor, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
Once on the scene, deputies learned that Gonzales was shot in the right upper chest area by a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol. The weapon reportedly was fired by Van Everett Wuhas, 21.
“Lead Investigator Sgt. Billy Knox responded to the scene and worked the case throughout the late evening hours. After conducting the follow-up investigation and interviewing Van Wuhas, it was determined that Justin Gonzales and Wuhas are very close friends to the point they call themselves ‘cousins,’” DeFoor said. “According to Wuhas, his friend Gonzales was visiting at his home alone and just prior to the shooting, Wuhas was ‘dry firing’ his 9 mm automatic pistol. Gonzales had just stepped into the same room as Wuhas when the pistol discharged and the bullet struck Gonzales.”
Wuhas immediately called “911” and reported the shooting. Upon arrival of the first responder medical staff, Gonzales was conscious but obviously in critical condition. Life Flight was called and Gonzales was airlifted but expired while in flight to a Houston trauma center.

Mum And Toddler Escape Death When Neighbor’s Gun Goes Off While Cleaning

Upper Marlboro, MD (1-20-16)   A Maryland mother says she and her 3-year-old daughter were lucky to escape injury when a neighbor cleaning his shotgun accidentally fired into their home. Uzma Khan, 30, a mother of two small children in Upper Marlboro, said she and her 3-year-old daughter had just left the bedroom Jan. 14 when the shotgun blast punched holes in the walls of the master bathroom and bedroom.

“I was shaking. I was crying and just because I couldn’t get the picture of me and my daughter, especially my children, out of my mind, standing there, God forbid, God forbid, getting shot or something,” Khan told WJLA-TV. The Prince George’s County police report said the shotgun was accidentally fired by Khan’s neighbor while he was cleaning the weapon.

“I heard a loud noise and … it sounded like a blast,” Khan told WTOP-TV. “I went into the bedroom and saw the bullet holes and I was shocked.” “I cannot even go into my room because I cannot get the picture [out of my mind] of my kid standing there, because they could have been shot, especially my daughter who was there with me 10 minutes ago,” Khan said.

The police report said Khan’s neighbor apologized and offered to pay for the damage to the home. The man moved his shotgun to a safe in his mother’s home, the report says. Khan said she hopes her neighbor learned a lesson about gun safety. “You’re not a killer, you’re not a murderer, you don’t want to take anybody’s life, but you could have done that,” she said. Khan said she does not believe her neighbor will face charges. Police said the case is being “handled” by detectives and it will be up to prosecutors to determine whether there will be any charges.
