2-year-old shot by another child in LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. —(1-4-16)    A 2-year-old is recovering after being shot in Troup County.

Police say another child pulled the trigger inside the Wood Glen Apartment Complex in LaGrange.

Channel 2’s Rikki Klaus went by the apartment on North Cary Street, but no one was home.

Neighbors say the family went to the hospital Monday afternoon, when a two-year-old girl was shot in the torso. A neighbor upstairs, who did not want to be identified, heard the screams.

"It was just scary. Real scary. I didn't know what was going on." The neighbor said. "It was just hysterical. You know, screams, a lot of screams."

Klaus saw LaGrange police on scene, investigating. They said another child shot the 2-year-old while playing with a gun.

Police said two adult females were home at the time of the shooting. One was the child’s mother. There were three other children in the apartment as well, ages 10, 3 and 1.

Around 4:30 p.m. an emergency medical helicopter flew the wounded child to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The neighbor said she feels sad for the family that's always been nice to her.

"And especially about a child, a baby. I have one of my own and I can only imagine how that mother must feel. So it's very scary," the neighbor said.

Investigators say the child who shot the toddler is with the family.

No charges have been filed, and so far-no names have been released.

At last check, the child who was shot underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Troup County Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000.

Dad charged after son accidentally shoots, kills little brother

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN)   (1-4-16)    – A Goodlettsville father has been indicted on two felonies in the accidental shooting death of his 5-year-old son.

It happened on Nov. 21 just before Thanksgiving after the child’s big brother got a hold of the father’s loaded handgun and pulled the trigger.

The 5-year-old boy was hit in the head and died at the family’s apartment off Moss Trail.

Their father, 31-year-old Robert Turner, is charged with felony criminal negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.

Police say it was his semi-automatic handgun with a laser site that was used in the accidental shooting.

Turner is accused of messing around with the laser, pointing it at the wall so their cat could chase it.

He allegedly put the gun down for 30 seconds when his 7-year-old picked it up and accidentally pulled the trigger, killing his little brother.

Nashville self-defense expert Buford Tune told News 2 that a gun is nothing to be played with, laser or no laser.

“You have a semi-automatic, it has a light trigger, usually a 5 to 5.5-pound trigger any kid can press,” Tune said.

“Leaving it laying there, I have a big problem with that,” he added.

Tune says education is the key.

“You can say, ‘Stop! Don’t touch it! Go tell an adult! Get away from it. Don’t pick it up! Don’t touch it; go tell someone!’” he explained.

Turner is scheduled to be in Davidson County court on Jan 13. for his arraignment.

Mother of three accidentally shot and killed by her fiance

SANDUSKY, OH  (1-4-16)   (13abc Action News) - Family members of Katelin Castile, 26, and Jermane Kennedy, 26, said their love ran deep. They were high school sweethearts who had three kids together.

However, on January 1, 2016 at 934 W. Washington Street Sandusky police said an accidental gun shot went off from Kennedy’s 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Castile was shot in the neck by her fiancĂ©. She died at Firelands Hospital nearly two hours later.

“I know it was a terrible accident. I was there,” said Jermane’s sister Krystal Cruz. “Jermane would never do anything to hurt Kate. Kate was his life.”

Police believe Kennedy was trying to show a friend his gun and the weapon discharged.

Both families are mourning while Kennedy remains behind bars on a felonious assault charge.

“My brother is a big teddy bear,” said Jasmine Kennedy. “He loved Kate more than anything. That’s the love people search for.”

“We don’t have anyone to blame,” said Katelin’s sister Jade Castile. “We want to be mad at someone, but there’s no energy for that. It’s just an accident that’s sick.”

Katelin’s best friend said she feels sorry for Kennedy.

“He’s sitting in a room by himself,” Brittany Hartwig said. “You know we all have somebody to morn with and hug and cry and I just hate to hear that he’s just sitting in a room with nothing but his thoughts.”

The Castile family is having to deal with the loss of someone special after the family was hit with a violent tragedy about a year and a half ago. Denzel Castile, 19, was charged with aggravated murder of his cousin 11-week-old Athena Castile.

“We’ve dealt with this before. We have no one to hate,” said Jade Castile. “When something like this happens you want someone to hate. You want to take your anger out. . . We have no one to hate. So we’ve been there before.”

Now standing strong again after another death.

“We are an unbreakable family,” said Cruz. “We’re a family that has been together for 14 years and we’ve never separated. Her family is our family.”
