Police: Shooting in Paterson may have been self-inflicted accident

PATERSON, NJ.. —(1-10-16)   A 29-year-old city man was shot in the 4th Ward Saturday night in an incident that authorities say may have been an accidental self-inflicted wound.

The incident happened on the same block where another shooting occurred two nights earlier, a case in which the victim also was a 29-year-old city man, according to police. Authorities declined to say whether the two shootings are connected.

The victim told police he was walking near the corner of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Hamilton Avenue at 9:30 p.m. when he heard gunshots and was wounded, police said. Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale said the man suffered a wound in a "lower limb."

Speziale said the events involving remain in question. "There is a possibility that this may turn out to be a self-inflicted wound," Speziale said.

The incident happened on a weekend when Paterson police deployed extra detectives and officers in high-crime areas, including the newly-created focused deterrent unit. "We completely locked down the hot spots," Speziale said.

Paterson has has six shootings during the first nine days of the year - three in the 1st Ward, one in the 3rd Ward and two in the 4th Ward. Police say that in two of the incidents men with guns may have accidentally shot themselves.

Police: Accidental shooting Saturday at Wilmington gun show

WILMINGTON — (1-10-16)  An accidental shooting injured at least one person Saturday at the Ohio Gun Collectors Association Show at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington.

Col. Brian Prickett of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said one man was injured when there was an accidental discharge of a gun, and another person may have also been struck. He believed that any injuries were not life-threatening ones.

Prickett said more details may be available Monday.

He also stated that the organization running the gun show is a “top-notch” one that is very safety conscious, and that normally the only loaded guns at the show “are ours” (sheriff’s deputies). He said that, to his knowledge, the gun show is continuing today.

Accidental Shooting, Guns Seen on Social Media

MOBILE, Ala. (1-10-16)  A 15-year-old female is charged with manslaughter after police say she shot and killed her boyfriend accidentally Saturday night in a home on Agate Avenue.
It's also not the first time this teen couple was actually seen together with a gun.
Local 15's Bryan Carnaggio has an update on the investigation.
The teenager that was killed Saturday night was 16-year-old Jermaine Wright.
He was a young man that friends say had a smile that could light up this world.
"He did smile a lot, he was always happy, always happy," a friend of Wright said.
Wright was  killed inside a friends home Saturday evening when police say his girlfriend accidentally shot him in the face.
"I was heartbroken because like him and my cousin they were best friends like if you see one you're going to see the other," a friend of Wright said.
A friend of Wright's was to distraught and didn't want to be identified. She described the slain teen as easy-going, and someone she never thought this would happen too.
"He was never the kind of person that never goes and looks for trouble," a friend of Wright said.
Police determined Wright was killed when his 15-year-old girlfriend was playing with a handgun that eventually discharged.
"They did love each other. They were together for a long time. They would break up and get right back together, it was like they couldn't stay a part from one another," a friend of Wright said.
The teen couple publicly shared their love for guns on Facebook.
In a picture Wright and his girlfriend can be seen displaying a handgun while posing together.
It also continues through parts of each of their profiles, displaying what looks to be a similar weapon in other photos.
It's something that Wright's friend said is not uncommon for teens his age.
"He's a good kid but he's like most kids on Facebook. Most kids on Facebook post pictures with guns, but I never thought that something like this would happen to him," a friend of Wright said.
Police say his girlfriend was arrested Saturday night and charged with manslaughter.
She has since been transported to the Strickland Youth Center.

Medford man shot in leg while sitting in truck

Medford, OR, (1-10-16)  Police investigate whether shooting was accidental.

Police are investigating after a man was shot in the leg Sunday afternoon while sitting with another man in a pick-up truck parked in a west Medford neighborhood.

Speaking at the scene of the investigation, Medford Police Department Sergeant Jason Antley said Sunday evening that police aren't sure yet whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. He said a handgun went off twice inside the truck.
"Two shots were fired. That's part of the troubling aspect of this case," Antley said.
A report of the shooting came in at 4:12 p.m., he said.
The victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital, witnesses said.
Police found two casings inside the truck but were still looking for the two fired bullets Sunday evening. Antley said one of the bullets may be in the victim's leg.
Several officers were on the scene of the shooting in the 300 block of Chestnut Street searching for evidence, interviewing relatives and neighbors and checking neighboring homes to make sure no one else was hit by the second bullet.
No one else was hurt, police said.
A bullet hole was visible in the driver's side door of a white Dodge Ram truck parked in the gravel driveway of a home on the street.
A relative of the victim said he was about 30 years old.
Police did not release the name of the victim. The second young man who was in the truck with the victim at the time of the shooting was sitting in the back of a police car being questioned Sunday evening.
Whoever fired the weapon could face charges that range from unlawful use of a weapon to — if the shooting was intentional — first-degree assault or attempted murder, Antley said.
He said there was no indication Sunday evening that either man had felony convictions that could lead to felon in possession of a firearm charges.
Antley said Medford police were with the victim at a local hospital to interview him. He said the injury was not life-threatening.

from me: the below link is concerning negligent discharges at gun shows.  From the alarming frequency they reveal, I won't be attending any gun shows....these accounts all from NRA members and gun lovers.  I especially like the one comment who hypothesizes it's an intentional shot fired to generate bad press.  That one incident among the dozens....
