KENNER, La. - (1-1-160  A Kenner man firing a gun toward an empty lot in celebration of New Year's, had one of the bullets ricochet off of a metal pole and strike a woman who was getting out of a nearby car, according to police.

The victim was taken to University Hospital, treated and released.

Brandon Smith, 26, was arrested and booked with aggravated battery, negligent injury and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Police said they responded to a call of a woman shot and learned that Smith had been standing on the second floor of a balcony at his apartment complex and that he fired several shots into an empty lot.

"As a result of his negligent behavior, one of the rounds ricocheted off a metal pole and struck a 40-year-old woman in the abdominal area as she exited a vehicle," said a police spokesman.

Kenner Police said they obtained a search warrant and found a .38 caliber handgun hidden in a vent inside of the apartment where Smith was staying. Police said Smith admitted to firing the gun in celebration.
