Woman accidentally shoots husband at Colorado Springs firing range

Colorado Springs, CO -  (1-15-16)   A woman accidentally shot her husband in the leg at an indoor firing range in north Colorado Springs on Friday morning.

The man was transported to the hospital with a non life-threatening injury after his wife fired the shot with a .22-caliber hangun at the Mangum Shooting Center at 13372 Meadowgrass Drive, said business co-founder Kim Shugart.

The incident was reported just before noon.

Shugart said it was the first time an accidental shooting occurred at his business.

"I wish we as a society could stop all accidents from happening, not just accidental discharges of a firearm," he said.

After the shooting, business inside the shooting range remained steady.

Investigation into teen shooting death continues in Hummelstown

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa.  (1-15-16) — Police in Dauphin County continue to investigate the shooting death of a juvenile in Hummelstown. The Hummelstown Police Department are not releasing many details about the victim or how it happened.

A news conference is scheduled for Friday to update the investigation.

"Names are being withheld at this time until next of kin are notified," Hummelstown police Cpl. Justin Hess said.

Despite the lack of details, a source tells CBS 21 reporter Michael Gorsegner the victim is a boy in ninth grade, and the shooting may be accidental.

Gorsegner also learned grief counselors would be on hand in Lower Dauphin schools Friday for students and staff to talk about the shooting.

According to police, officers got the call for a victim with a gunshot wound around 5:30 p.m. last night. When officers got to the home in the 200 block of West Main Street, they found one victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The officers tried to help the young victim until EMS arrived, but unfortunately it was too late.

"An investigation in this incident is ongoing. All persons in this incident are accounted for and there's no threat to the public," Hess said.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. For the next several hours, police canvassed the home, cordoning off a big chunk of the block and taking pictures and logging evidence. Much of the investigation appears to have focused on the upstairs of the two story home. Police say this appears to be an isolated incident and no one else is in danger.

Police would not say if there were other people inside the home at the time of the gunfire, only that this is a continuing investigation.

An autopsy will be performed sometime next week.

A Facebook page has been set up in memory of the juvenile that was killed. Friends have been posting messages throughout the night, along with pictures.

This is the second time this year school year counselors have been brought to Lower Dauphin schools following a student's death.

Coroner to rule on Rock Falls shooting

ROCK FALLS, OK – (1-15-16)  The investigation into the death of an Oklahoma man who may have shot himself in a pickup truck in Rock Falls on Jan. 9 might yet take a month or so to wrap up.

Illinois State Police is handling the investigation into the death of Cephas Little Smith III, 52, of Eldorado, Oklahoma.

Once the evidence has been gathered and analyzed, a report will be sent to Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald, whose job it will be to determine the manner of death, in this case, suicide, homicide, accidental or undetermined.

Whether and what action then will be taken will depend on McDonald’s ruling and the Whiteside County state’s attorney.

If he thinks it is necessary, McDonald might decide to hold a coroner’s inquest, in which the evidence will be presented to six jurors who will determine the manner of death.

Given the technological advances in evidence-gathering and analysis, such inquests rarely are needed these days, though, McDonald said, adding that Whiteside County has not had an inquest in 7 or 8 years.

At this point, no arrests have been made, said Lt. Victor Markowski, interim commander for Zone 2 investigations.

At 2:11 p.m. that Saturday, a trooper stopped the pickup on Buell Road near Thome Road, just south of Rock Falls, and its driver exited to tell him that Smith had shot himself in the head, state police and McDonald have said.

The trooper and emergency workers pulled Smith from the truck in an effort to render aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

When he was shot – before or during the stop – and why the stop was initiated has not been released. Investigators still are working out the sequence of events, said Markowski, who also declined to name the driver of the pickup.

At the time of his death, Smith was under investigation in a fatal traffic accident in his hometown.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, he was driving a pickup that went off the road around 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day and struck a tree, killing his passenger, Robert Wells, 50, also of Eldorado.

As the officer talked with the driver by his police cruiser, a single gunshot was heard in the SUV, JSO said. The officer drew his firearm and all occupants exited the vehicle and screamed that a passenger in the SUV's luggage compartment shot himself.

The 17-year-old was sitting in the very back of the SUV when he accidentally shot himself. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The infant had a fever and was taken to the hospital, along with its mother.

One person in the vehicle was arrested on a pending warrant for burglary. Marijuana was found in the vehicle and more charges are pending, JSO said.
