No charges in accidental shooting inside Lorain store

LORAIN, Ohio — (1-11-16)  Investigators don't expect to seek criminal charges against a man who shot his friend in the head, Lorain police said Monday.

Police ruled the shooting that took place Friday afternoon inside Rudy's Market on West 23rd Street an accident.

Police said the 25-year-old clerk was sitting behind the register when he pulled out a .45-caliber pistol to show to a 24-year-old friend sitting next to him.

The clerk was handling the gun when it went off and a bullet struck his friend in the head.

Paramedics took the 24-year-old man to Mercy Hospital in Lorain. Doctors transfered him to MetroHealth in Cleveland.

The man's condition was not immediately available Monday afternoon.

The shooting victim was conscious and able to speak with investigators shortly after he was shot, Lorain Poice Capt. Roger Watkins said.

He was able to confirm that the shooting was an accident, Watkins said.

No one else was inside the store at the time of the shooting, he said.

Police: Man facing charges after accidentally shooting self

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) (1-11-16) — A New Haven man will face gun charges after police say he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

New Haven police say 23-year-old Cameron Wright originally told officers he’d been shot at a bodega while trying to buy drugs.

Police responded Sunday evening to Yale-New Haven Hospital after Wright was admitted for a gunshot wound.

He told police he thought he’d heard fireworks and later realized he’d been shot. Witnesses told officers they hadn’t heard any gunshots.

Police say Wright eventually told them a gun in his pocket had gone off.

Wright told police a friend disposed of the gun. Detectives haven’t recovered it.

Police say Wright will face charges of carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment in the first degree.

Update: Boy stable after being shot with pellet gun

Rain Smith  (1-11-16)
A 4-year-old who was shot in the head with a pellet gun outside a Kingsport residence remained hospitalized in stable condition on Monday.

Tegan White's grandmother, Cindy Roberts, tells the Times-News that the boy is heavily sedated at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and connected to a breathing tube. She said that though he has yet to verbally communicate, family members are encouraged that he has been moving his extremities.

Kingsport police are declining to release specifics about the Friday afternoon incident. According to Roberts, Tegan was accidentally shot as they visited a residence in the Ridgefields area. She said he was riding his bicycle when he crossed into the path of someone firing a pellet gun.

Pellet guns discharge non-spherical metal projectiles with compressed air, making them more powerful than BB guns. Roberts says the pellet struck Tegan on one side of his forehead and passed out the other.

Police are currently declining to identify who shot the weapon, as is Roberts. She stated that she called 911 when the shooting occurred, with another individual immediately loading the boy in a car and transporting him to Holston Valley Medical Center.

"It was faster to get him in a car and get him there," said Roberts. "The person who took him stayed with him the whole time."

Roberts says that Tegan underwent one surgery at HVMC prior to transport to Knoxville. There is currently no timetable for his potential release, with the family continuing to ask for the community's prayers for his recovery.

As of Monday afternoon, KPD Public Information Officer Tom Patton says detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.

Authorities: North Forsyth dad shoots son, 18, in accident while cleaning pistol

NORTH FORSYTH, GA    (1-11-16) — A north Forsyth teenager was shot in the stomach Saturday afternoon while he and his father cleaned a gun that accidentally discharged, officials said.

The 18-year-old was standing next to his father in a north Forsyth house about 5 p.m. Saturday as the 42-year-old cleaned the Smith & Wesson .40 pistol, according to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

His father accidentally shot the firearm, wounding the young man in his abdomen.

The teen’s father and a 33-year-old woman, whose relationship to the men wasn’t immediately clear, drove him to Forsyth County Fire Station 8 on Keith Bridge Road.

From there, the teen was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

“If you’re cleaning a weapon, make sure you’re doing it safely and that you know it’s not loaded. Check and double check,” Rodriguez said. “In law enforcement, we get a second person to clear it just to be sure you avoid an accidental shooting and anybody getting hurt.”

He added that charges are neither pending nor expected.

“Our priority is safety.” Accidental gun discharge at Vigo County Public Library

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) (1-11-16)  – It’s where you go to get away from the noise, but a scary moment broke the silence when a gunshot rang out at the Vigo County Public Library.

On Tuesday police were called to the scene of an accidental discharge. It happened during a small meeting being held in the lower level of the library.

“We did have an incident where proper precautions weren’t taken,” said Kristi Howe, Director of the Vigo County Public Library.

The library offers meeting rooms, which provide an extra sense of comfort and security for community organizations or groups. On Tuesday afternoon “gun hobbyists” reserved a room, and it was during their discussion when a person in attendance had a gun accidentally discharge.

“Throughout the course of their meeting they were handling firearms that were intended to be unloaded, and in fact one of them did still have a live round in the chamber,” said Howe.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident, and because of the seclusion of the room not many heard the shot either. The bullet caused minimal damage to a wall, which has since been repaired.

“You know you do what you can to try to make sure your environment is as safe as it can be, but sometimes accidents do just happen.”

Hoosiers who have a permit can take a firearm on public property, with the exception of schools, courts, and law enforcement offices, the measure was approved back in 2011.

“There’s always the possibility that guns are in the building and we’re not even aware of it. The library board does not really have the ability to implement additional regulation beyond Indiana code, we just comply with what the code states for us,” said Howe.

The library is working with the group to make sure a similar incident does not happen again in the future. “We’re not interested in the gun control debate, our first priority is safety.”
