(5 wounded/ 1 dead) Gunskilltoo Jan 27th; Two yr old and cop shoot selves, home defense gone wrong

Should I summarize?

A New Orleans Sheriff is shot in the hand after a gun "malfunction."  But we want to train kids to use guns?   In Waldorf, MD an as yet unidentified  man, who neighbors say wears a uniform (security guard?) laid down his handgun.  His two year old picked the gun up and shot itself in the leg.   Another trained professional?    In Bloomington, IN, a 21 year old man shot himself with a glock he'd just purchased.  He was sitting on the couch playing with his new toy.   A Meriden, CT man shot himself at home, sparse details.  Just another silly accident.   These plus the crazy robbery gone bad, in which one of the perps apparently shot themselves during the getaway in Baytown TX.    Now this late addition, in Holiday, FL a home defense gone wrong, a 16 yr old girl shot.

POLICE: ATTACKER DIES AFTER BUDDIES DITCH HIM FOLLOWING DEADLY BAYTOWN SHOOTING

BAYTOWN, TX  (1-27-16) -- Police say four men went to a home in Baytown to attack another man, and in the process, one suspect was accidentally shot and later died.

Just before 10pm Monday, police were called to the intersection of Tumbleweed Lane and Coyote Lane after a couple of guys were spotted unsuccessfully trying to get an injured man into a gray Impala. Officers found David Andrew Pena, 22, and determined he had been shot in the torso. Pena was taken to Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital where he died.

Detectives looking for witnesses discovered the front door of a home in the 4100 block of Tumbleweed had been forced open. They entered the home and found the body of Branyon Fehring, 23. Fehring had been shot multiple and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A nearby officer spotted a speeding gray Impala and pulled over the driver. Behind the wheel, Renaldo Cardona, 20, had blood on his clothing.

After questioning, detectives say Cardona, Pena, Tristan Fulkerson, 19; and Timothy Toulliet, 17, had gone to Fehring's home and killed him. They say that while the four were punching and shooting, Fehring, Fulkerson accidentally shot Pena in the torso. Police add the men unsuccessfully tried to get Pena into the Impala before leaving him at the crime scene.

Fulkerson, Cardona and Toulliet have been charged with capital murder and denied bond. They were transported to the Harris County Jail.

Two-year-old who accidentally shot himself with father's gun in Waldorf is recovering

WALDORF, Md.   (1-27-16) — It was an urgent call Wednesday afternoon at the Adams Crossing Apartments in Waldorf.    "It was a shocker," recalls Shenita Lane. "I would never have thought that this would ever have happened to him."

The focus of an emergency 9-1-1 call: a two-year-old boy shot at close range.   "Little boy shot himself with his father's gun," says Devonta Dotson, a neighbor.   Arriving officers found the toddler, wounded and crying.    The father told investigators he had been taking a nap.

"He woke up when he heard a gunshot," says Janelle Love, a Charles County Sheriff's Office spokesperson. "He came out to find his two-year-old had accidentally shot himself in the leg, and the gun was laying nearby."

Shocked neighbors looked on, as the youngster was transported to the hospital.   "We just saw a lady carrying him out," Dotson says. "He was just like, out of it as she carried him to the ambulance."   First responders who treated the boy said later he was 'alert and conscious' as he was transported.

According to Maryland law, the loaded semi-automatic handgun should have been stored in a locked cabinet or secured with a gunlock.   It was not.    "It is against the law to have a firearm within reach of children that is not locked up safe and secure," Love says.

Police aren't commenting on the father's profession, but sources say he is a security guard.   Neighbors say he typically wears a uniform and drives an unmarked car.

"I've always seen him with the kids, out playing with the kids," says Shenita Lane, who lives across the hall. "In and out, going back and forth to work, but I never thought he would have laid the gun down. Never."    How the two-year-old was able to get ahold of the gun and pull the trigger is unclear.    Residents describe the father as a doting parent, who this day was alone in the apartment with his son.

"Be more careful," Lane says. "If you're going to get one, lock it up. Just lock it up. Keep it so the kids never get to it."

Authorities aren't saying if the gun is the father's personal firearm, or a service weapon.    Police are not identifying the father or his son.    No charges have been filed.   That will be up to the State's Attorney's Office.     A decision on charges is expected to take about a week.

Neighbors are relieved the toddler's life isn't in danger.     "It could have been worse," Dotson says. "Thank God he's still here. Speedy recovery, hopefully."
