Sheriff: Teen accidentally shoots student outside Arkansas high school

Camden, AR - (1-14-16)   An 18-year-old student has been treated and released from the hospital after he was accidentally shot outside a Ouachita County high school Wednesday, authorities said.
Ouachita County Sheriff David Norwood said it happened around 3 p.m. at Harmony Grove High School after the teen and a 17-year-old friend were dropped back off at the school. They had been attending a vocational tech program off-campus and returned by bus shortly before school dismissed for the day.
Norwood said the older student had forgotten he had a pistol in his vehicle. The sheriff said the younger student found it and was "messing with it" when it went off, shot through the driver-side seat and struck the 18-year-old in the back.
"It was nothing intentional, just friends and a little bit of stupidity mixed in," Norwood said.
He said the bullet struck only "fatty tissue" and the student's injury didn't require surgery.
The 17-year-old appeared in front of a juvenile magistrate Wednesday night, though Norwood said he could not discuss what, if any charges, that teen could face.
The investigation was continuing, and the 18-year-old could face a charge of possessing a firearm on school property, Norwood added.

Gallia man killed in accidental shooting Tuesday

Gallia County, OH (1-14-16)  A young Gallia County man was killed Tuesday morning, January 12, at a Scioto Township residence by his friend and co-worker in what the office of Jackson County Sheriff Tedd Frazier is describing as an accidental, but possibly negligent, shooting.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim as Rowdy White, 22, of Bidwell in Gallia County. The name of the shooter is not being released as he has not yet been charged and an investigation is continuing.

According to the sheriff's office, a 9-1-1 call was received at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday from a male at 775 Spangenberg Road in Scioto Township reporting a shooting had occurred at his home and that another man was wounded. Deputies and the Jackson County EMS rushed to the residence situated on the far western end of the county and very near the Scioto County line.

Deputies arrived to find White mortally wounded from a single gunshot to the chest. Efforts were made to resuscitate him and he was taken by Jackson County EMS to Holzer Medical Center-Jackson where he was later declared dead. An investigator from the Jackson County Coroner's Office was on the scene at the hospital.

Some circumstances and details of the shooting are not being released at this time, but the sheriff's office has confirmed the shooting occurred inside the house and the shooter and victim were the only persons present at the time.

Investigators says there is no doubt that the resident shot White once with a 9 millimeter pistol. While investigators have labeled the shooting as being clearly "accidental," it is also considered to be possibly "negligent." White and the shooter were considered to be friends and were also both employed as corrections officers at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility at Lucasville. The shooter, who reportedly didn't think the gun was loaded, was said to be in deep shock after the shooting and is being evaluated by mental health professionals, but is considered to be in custody.

The investigation will continue and the case will be turned over to the office of Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Justin Lovett for possible prosecution and could be presented to a future session of the Jackson County Grand Jury.
