Haines police officer in stable condition after accidentally shooting himself

Haines, WA.  (1-6-16)   Haines police officer Brayton Long is in stable condition after he accidentally shot himself Tuesday.
Long was conducting a firearms training when he shot himself in the lower part of one of his arms. He was transported to the Haines Clinic before being medevaced to Harborview in Seattle for further treatment. A spokesperson for the hospital said Long is recovering.
Acting police Chief Josh Dryden says no foul play is suspected. Dryden said Long seems to be doing fine under the circumstances. He said Long told him the bullet didn’t hit anything “important.”
An investigation by the Alaska State Troopers is ongoing. Dryden said just like any accidental shooting, they have to make sure there were no other factors involved.
Long is the newest member of the Haines Police Department. He started a couple of months ago after having worked as a police officer in Skagway for five years.
Dryden said, “he’s a great officer and an even better human being.”
There’s no time frame for how long he’ll need to recover. Dryden said that the Haines Police Department will work with state law enforcement agencies to fill in the gaps. Another option, he said, is to bring in an officer or two from other jurisdictions to fill in temporarily.

2-year-old shot by another child in LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. —(1-4-16)    A 2-year-old is recovering after being shot in Troup County.

Police say another child pulled the trigger inside the Wood Glen Apartment Complex in LaGrange.

Channel 2’s Rikki Klaus went by the apartment on North Cary Street, but no one was home.

Neighbors say the family went to the hospital Monday afternoon, when a two-year-old girl was shot in the torso. A neighbor upstairs, who did not want to be identified, heard the screams.

"It was just scary. Real scary. I didn't know what was going on." The neighbor said. "It was just hysterical. You know, screams, a lot of screams."

Klaus saw LaGrange police on scene, investigating. They said another child shot the 2-year-old while playing with a gun.

Police said two adult females were home at the time of the shooting. One was the child’s mother. There were three other children in the apartment as well, ages 10, 3 and 1.

Around 4:30 p.m. an emergency medical helicopter flew the wounded child to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The neighbor said she feels sad for the family that's always been nice to her.

"And especially about a child, a baby. I have one of my own and I can only imagine how that mother must feel. So it's very scary," the neighbor said.

Investigators say the child who shot the toddler is with the family.

No charges have been filed, and so far-no names have been released.

At last check, the child who was shot underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Troup County Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000.

Dad charged after son accidentally shoots, kills little brother

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN)   (1-4-16)    – A Goodlettsville father has been indicted on two felonies in the accidental shooting death of his 5-year-old son.

It happened on Nov. 21 just before Thanksgiving after the child’s big brother got a hold of the father’s loaded handgun and pulled the trigger.

The 5-year-old boy was hit in the head and died at the family’s apartment off Moss Trail.

Their father, 31-year-old Robert Turner, is charged with felony criminal negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.

Police say it was his semi-automatic handgun with a laser site that was used in the accidental shooting.

Turner is accused of messing around with the laser, pointing it at the wall so their cat could chase it.

He allegedly put the gun down for 30 seconds when his 7-year-old picked it up and accidentally pulled the trigger, killing his little brother.

Nashville self-defense expert Buford Tune told News 2 that a gun is nothing to be played with, laser or no laser.

“You have a semi-automatic, it has a light trigger, usually a 5 to 5.5-pound trigger any kid can press,” Tune said.

“Leaving it laying there, I have a big problem with that,” he added.

Tune says education is the key.

“You can say, ‘Stop! Don’t touch it! Go tell an adult! Get away from it. Don’t pick it up! Don’t touch it; go tell someone!’” he explained.

Turner is scheduled to be in Davidson County court on Jan 13. for his arraignment.

Mother of three accidentally shot and killed by her fiance

SANDUSKY, OH  (1-4-16)   (13abc Action News) - Family members of Katelin Castile, 26, and Jermane Kennedy, 26, said their love ran deep. They were high school sweethearts who had three kids together.

However, on January 1, 2016 at 934 W. Washington Street Sandusky police said an accidental gun shot went off from Kennedy’s 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Castile was shot in the neck by her fiancĂ©. She died at Firelands Hospital nearly two hours later.

“I know it was a terrible accident. I was there,” said Jermane’s sister Krystal Cruz. “Jermane would never do anything to hurt Kate. Kate was his life.”

Police believe Kennedy was trying to show a friend his gun and the weapon discharged.

Both families are mourning while Kennedy remains behind bars on a felonious assault charge.

“My brother is a big teddy bear,” said Jasmine Kennedy. “He loved Kate more than anything. That’s the love people search for.”

“We don’t have anyone to blame,” said Katelin’s sister Jade Castile. “We want to be mad at someone, but there’s no energy for that. It’s just an accident that’s sick.”

Katelin’s best friend said she feels sorry for Kennedy.

“He’s sitting in a room by himself,” Brittany Hartwig said. “You know we all have somebody to morn with and hug and cry and I just hate to hear that he’s just sitting in a room with nothing but his thoughts.”

The Castile family is having to deal with the loss of someone special after the family was hit with a violent tragedy about a year and a half ago. Denzel Castile, 19, was charged with aggravated murder of his cousin 11-week-old Athena Castile.

“We’ve dealt with this before. We have no one to hate,” said Jade Castile. “When something like this happens you want someone to hate. You want to take your anger out. . . We have no one to hate. So we’ve been there before.”

Now standing strong again after another death.

“We are an unbreakable family,” said Cruz. “We’re a family that has been together for 14 years and we’ve never separated. Her family is our family.”

Man firing gun to celebrate New Year's accidentally shoots woman

KENNER, La. - (1-1-160  A Kenner man firing a gun toward an empty lot in celebration of New Year's, had one of the bullets ricochet off of a metal pole and strike a woman who was getting out of a nearby car, according to police.

The victim was taken to University Hospital, treated and released.

Brandon Smith, 26, was arrested and booked with aggravated battery, negligent injury and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Police said they responded to a call of a woman shot and learned that Smith had been standing on the second floor of a balcony at his apartment complex and that he fired several shots into an empty lot.

"As a result of his negligent behavior, one of the rounds ricocheted off a metal pole and struck a 40-year-old woman in the abdominal area as she exited a vehicle," said a police spokesman.

Kenner Police said they obtained a search warrant and found a .38 caliber handgun hidden in a vent inside of the apartment where Smith was staying. Police said Smith admitted to firing the gun in celebration.

(2 wounded/ 1 dead) Gunskilltoo Jan 1st; Moron Takes Gun to an MRI

Gun discharges in MRI at Indianapolis Veterans Affairs hospital

Indianapolis,  (12-31-15)   A veteran was wounded Wednesday at Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Affairs Medical Center when a handgun he brought into the Indianapolis hospital accidentally discharged in his pocket while he was in a procedure room — possibly an MRI suite.

Hospital officials confirmed the accidental shooting in a statement issued Thursday and reported the victim, whose name was not released, received immediate medical attention. The statement added the man's wound did not threaten his life.

A hospital spokesman initially confirmed in a telephone call from The Indianapolis Star that the incident involved an MRI, but the subsequent statement said only that the incident occurred "in a procedure room." When asked for clarification about the involvement of the MRI, the spokesman said in an email that the statement "is our response at this time."

The statement noted it is a violation of federal and state law to bring a firearm into the hospital and "notification of this law is posted at every entrance."

Having a gun or other metal object in the vicinity of an MRI machine would also be a violation of widely accepted medical and safety protocol, according to American Journal of Roentgenology, and could have fatal consequences. It was unclear Thursday if criminal charges would be pursued. The Marion County prosecutor's office was closed Thursday.

The accident at Roudebush may be the first time in the U.S. that a patient was wounded when a gun discharged in an MRI unit.

It also is at least the second instance of a handgun accidentally firing in the suite of one powerful imagining machines which, according to WebMD, use "a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body."

In the other case, according to a 2002 report in the American Journal of Roentgenology, a gun discharged in an MRI after it was pulled from the hand of an off-duty police officer as he attempted to place the weapon on a cabinet about 3 feet away from the MRI's magnet bore. No one was injured in that case.

In 2009, another off-duty police officer in Florida sustained a minor hand injury when her department-issued gun was pulled inside an MRI machine. Jacksonville TV station WJTX reported the injury occurred when her hand became trapped between the gun and magnet.

Another MRI accident — which involved a metal object, but not a gun — claimed the life of a 6-year-old New York boy in 2001.

The deadly accident at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., occurred when a metal oxygen tank about the size of a fire extinguisher was pulled into the MRI and fractured the boy's skull, according to the New York Times.

In a report on the 2002 incident in New York involving a handgun, the Journal of Roentgenology found, the police officer's "gun was immediately pulled into the bore, where it struck the left side and spontaneously discharged a round into the wall of the room at the rear of the magnet."

At the time the .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol fired, the report said, "it was reportedly in a cocked and locked position; that is, the hammer was cocked and the thumb safety was engaged to prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin." There also was a live round in the chamber.

"Many people who choose this weapon for personal protection will carry it in this manner because it allows them to quickly fire the weapon if needed," the report noted.

The discharge was likely "a result of the effect of the magnetic field on the firing pin block," the report said.

"The firing pin block was probably drawn into its uppermost position by force of the magnetic field. The firing pin block has to overcome only light pressure from a relatively small spring to release the firing pin. The pistol was likely drawn into the magnetic field so that the muzzle struck the magnet's bore first. With the firing pin allowed to move freely in its channel, the force of the impact on the muzzle end was sufficient to cause the firing pin to overcome its spring pressure and move forward to strike the primer of the chambered round."

The report noted there were several points leading up to the incident where it could — and should — have been prevented.

"When the officer came in with the gun, it should have been immediately secured in a safe location, even before the officer changed for the examination," the report found.

"The technologist, knowing the officer had a firearm, should have instructed him that under no circumstances could he bring the weapon into the MR suite. Also, the technologist should have been monitoring the officer more closely to make sure he did not enter the MR suite with the weapon. Signs should have been posted at that site, if they were not already there, warning the public of the dangers of approaching the magnetic field of the MR imager with implants, metallic devices, or objects such as firearms."

The report concluded: "All radiologists should reexamine our own site's screening methods to ensure that steps are implemented to prevent such a situation from ever recurring."

Because Roudebush officials declined to comment, other than issuing a short statement, it was not clear what steps the hospital takes to warn or prevent patients for taking metal objects into MRI rooms.

The statement did say the hospital "strives to provide a safe and healthy atmosphere for veteran patients … and will continue to focus on providing a safe and healthy atmosphere for our veterans and staff."

It was also unclear Thursday how the Roudebush patient got into the procedure room with the loaded gun.

Dr. Emanuel Kanal, a former chair of the American College of Radiology MR Safety Committee, said in an article posted on DiagnosticImaging.com that hospital leaders must take precautions to prevent projectile accidents.

“The most serious incidents, albeit quite rare, involve projectile effects,” he said. “These need to be addressed if we are to significantly lower the incidence of MR-safety relative adverse events.”

The article noted there are no uniform safety guidelines or federal regulations. Kanal said such rules should come from within the radiology community.

“I do not, at this time, believe that external regulation is needed, with one caveat," he said. "MR sites must accept standardization of MR safety practices upon themselves in order to coherently and consistently prevent MR safety-related incidents and injuries.”
