Boy transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital in critical condition
Orlando, Fla (2-7-16) -- A 13-year-old boy was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando after being shot while visiting a relative.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department said the shooting happened at about 1 p.m. Sunday at a home on Spottswood Drive. OCSO is investigating the incident on as an accidental shooting.
The victim was visiting a relative’s home with two 18-year-olds when one of the 18-year-olds found a gun in a bedroom and started playing with it. The gun went off, critically wounding the 13-year-old.
The gun belonged to Walter Morame, who was later arrested by investigators for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Morame was not at home at the time of the shooting incident.
News 6 cameras were rolling as a man was placed in handcuffs while saying, "I love my nephew."
Tony Snellings, who lives next door, said he had just arrived home when he heard a gun go off.
"I know the kid got shot in the neck. Apparently they were just playing with guns," said Snellings. "I guess somehow it went off and the next thing you know, all of this is happening."
Snellings said that the victim was with his brother and two cousins at the time of the shooting. Snellings also said that he spoke with the victim's father moments after the shooting.
"He's pretty devastated. He called me and I just told him he needed to get home, and told him what was going on and about five minutes later I saw him running down the street, and he was pretty messed up about it," said Snellings.
Detectives spent several hours at the house, where they were seen carrying evidence bags from the home.
"Close knit family, well-rounded. I think it's a case of kids goofing off and playing with guns, not knowing what can happen," said Snellings.
Law enforcement officials said the boy is in critical condition.

Deputies: Macon Teen Accidentally Shoots Himself
Macon County, N.C. (2-8-16) -- A 14-year-old boy in Macon County shot himself while handling a gun on Saturday, according to the Macon County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded to the home on Rosemont Drive in Franklin and found Christopher Cowart with a gunshot wound to the head.
First responders airlifted him to Mission Hospital in Asheville where he is undergoing treatment.
His father, Robert Cowart, says the next few days are going to be critical because his son’s brain is swollen.
“It's definitely a tragedy and an accident that could possibly happen to anyone,” Robert Cowart said by phone.
He says he and his oldest son went to Ohio for a college trip on Friday morning.
He says he has several guns and keeps them under lock and key with the ammunition kept in a separate place.
He says since he was leaving, his wife took a pistol out for protection. He says she placed it high up like she normally does.
The next day is when Christopher got a hold of it when she wasn't home.
“Don't take anything for granted, even a teenager 14-year-old,” said Robert Cowart. “They're still adolescent kids and curiosity of doing things behind their parents back is a possibility.”
Deputies investigating the case say they believe Christopher thought it was unloaded when he was handling it and it went off.
His dad is calling it a tragedy and an accident.
The investigation is ongoing.

New information emerges about Greenetrack shooting
EUTAW, Ala. (2-8-16) — We are learning more information about a fatal shooting that happened Saturday afternoon at the Greenetrack Casino. Greene County District Attorney Greg Griggers said the suspect, Antoine Robinson, walked inside the lobby of the casino then assaulted a security guard, taking his gun and assaulting him with the weapon.
“I don’t know what was on this young man’s mind when he did this, this seems to be a very random act. And there is no reason for anyone to be concerned or worried about going to the Greenetrack, to think something like this would happen again. It is rare that there are any problems like this at the track,” Griggers said.
The District Attorney said the entire incident was caught on video surveillance cameras. Booker Vester is the security guard who was injured. He is a former Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy. After the suspect attacked Vester and took his gun, he tried to shoot Vester.
“You can see this individual pull or attempt to pull the trigger. I know he fired one round into the ground next to Mr. Vester after he beat him, so he is very lucky,” Griggers said.
Some residents like Matt Waits are on edge because of what happened.
“It is scary because your vulnerable no matter where you are. And something like that can happen and a person can hurt you and if someone is irrational, this can happen anywhere at any time. I try to be mindful of what’s going on, but I would never think that would happen. It is the last thing in your mind,” Wait said.
Robinson later ran outside and attempted to carjack a couple in the parking lot. In the process, Robinson fired several shots at their car. The driver had a gun and fired back and was wounded, but only suffered minor injuries. Greg Griggers said Robinson ran away and then accidentally shot himself.
“It appears that in the haste of getting away that he shot himself,” said Griggers. “I know he died of a gunshot wound to the head, and from all appearances it was self- inflicted.”
Security Guard Booker Vester is still in the hospital being treated for head injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
