New Details Reveal How a 5-Year-Old Lubbock Child Died in an Accidental Shooting

Lubbock, Tx  (2-16-16)  Tuesday night around 6 p.m., Lubbock Police were called to the scene of an accidental shooting in the 2500 block of 71st St.
EMS then rushed a 5-year-old child with a gunshot wound in the chest to Covenant Medical Center.
Not long after, the child was pronounced dead.
According to police, one sibling and both parents were at home at the time of the shooting.
It was not immediately clear if the child fired the weapon or if someone else did, but Wednesday morning KAMC News reported the child’s father was cleaning the rifle unaware that it was loaded when it discharged, sending a bullet through the wall and striking the child in the chest.
No names have been released at this time.
Lubbock Police Sergeant Jason Lewis issued a statement to KAMC:
“Unfortunately, a child did die after being transported to Covenant Women and Children’s from a gun shot wound. It appears to be accidental but we have steps that we have to take.”
Lewis said detectives with the Juvenile Crimes unit were called out to the scene to investigate.

Man doing OK after accidentally shooting himself                    (CLEANING)

New London, Oh   (2-16-16)  A village man went to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself after he finished cleaning his gun Saturday.

Dispatchers with the Huron County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a Park Avenue man who reported he accidentally shot himself after cleaning his gun, police said. The call came in just before 2 p.m.

New London Police Officers Lance Capiot and Eric Lucas, Chief Michael Marko and Sheriff Dane Howard responded to the man’s house with medical kits.

“He answered the door,” Capiot said, referring to the victim.

Police had the man, who was in his late 40s, sit on the sofa and continue to put pressure on his leg. Capiot said the man shot himself “mid-calf,” between his knee and ankle.

The subject suffered a gun shot to his leg from a 40-caliber handgun. He was conscious and able to respond to questions from officers and emergency medical personnel before being transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center for treatment, according to a Facebook post by New London police.

“He had a towel around his own leg,” said Capiot, who noticed there wasn’t a lot of blood on the towel, which probably was due to the pressure the man had on the wound.

“That stopped a lot of the blood. … He had handled a lot of it when we got there,” the officer added.

“The gun was in the living room. The incident happened in the living room,” Capiot said. “Our first priority was to make sure he was OK.”

The officer broke down what happened that led to the accidental shooting.

“He was just finished cleaning the gun,” Capiot said. “He was not cleaning his gun (while it was) loaded.

“He put a round in the chamber. He racked the round in the chamber. … That’s when it went off and got him in the leg,” he added.

Firelands Ambulance took the man to Fisher-Titus.

“He was treated and released. He was home that night,” Capiot said.

The officer stopped by the man’s house Sunday to check on him.

“He was doing OK. He was sitting back in his chair watching TV with his family,” Capiot said.

As of press time, the gun was at the station for safekeeping.

Man admits he was shot in Madison, not New Haven, police say

New Haven, Cn  (2-16-16)   An Old Saybrook man admitted Monday evening he falsely told police he was shot in downtown New Haven over the weekend when he had actually been shot in Madison, according to police.

The man, 19, was hit in the pelvis. He has been treated and released, police spokesman Officer David Hartman said in a press release Tuesday.

The man originally told police he was shot Sunday while with a group of friends in New Haven, Hartman said. The man said he and his friends were looking for their car when they were confronted by a group. The man said they heard a gunshot but that he didn’t realize he’d been hit until they found their car and were driving back to Old Saybrook.

The man sought medical help, and New Haven officers met an ambulance transporting him on its arrival at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

The man told officers he was out with friends at Toad’s Place on York Street, Hartman said. He said they parked a significant distance from the club, and when they tried to go home, they couldn’t find the car.

He told police they used a locator app on a cell phone before they were confronted by the group. The man told police he realized he had been shot after he and his friends ran to the car.

Hartman said New Haven officers were sent out to search for the crime scene in single-digit temperatures but couldn’t find evidence of one. He said 911 dispatchers didn’t receive any calls about gunfire downtown.

Detectives spoke to the man Monday evening and he then told them he’d been accidentally shot at a friend’s home in Madison, Hartman said.

New Haven police contacted Madison authorities about the shooting. It was not immediately clear whether the Old Saybrook man would face any charges in New Haven.

No one hurt in accidental gun discharge in east Vancouver             (thru wall)

Vancouver, BC  (2-16-16)  No one was hurt when an east Vancouver resident’s firearm discharged accidentally Tuesday evening, sending a bullet through a wall and into a neighbor’s apartment.

Vancouver Police Department Sgt. Patrick Johns said a woman examining her gun, which she thought was unloaded, accidentally fired a round at about 6:30 p.m.

The bullet shot through walls in her apartment and into a neighboring unit in the 13000 block of Southeast 20th Circle, Johns said. He said it seemed to responding officers that the woman had little experience with firearms or formal weapons training.

Johns said officers plan to file a report of an unlawful firearm discharge within city limits, but whether that results in any citation or fine will be up to the prosecutor.

“Thankfully, it just went into some drywall,” he said. “It didn’t hit anybody or do any major damage.”
