Officials: Man accidentally shoots another while showing handgun he was trying to sell

NEWBURG, WI   (1-31-16)  — Officials with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office say a 36-year-old Village of Newburg man accidentally shot a 35-year-old Town of Farmington man, while showing him a handgun that he was trying to sell.

The incident happened inside an apartment building on Main St. in Newburg shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, January 31st.

Deputies and a detective investigated the scene. The investigation revealed the handgun had not been completely cleared of ammunition, and it had discharged a bullet into the arm of the victim. The round had not penetrated into any other apartments.

The discharge appears to be accidental in nature. However, the Village of Newburg man was believed to be intoxicated at the time, and was taken into custody for intoxicated use of a firearm.

The victim was transported to Froedtert Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and was treated and released.

Man injured in accidental South Hero shooting

South Hero, Vt  (2-1-16)  A man was injured inside of McKee's Island Pub & Pizza in South Hero on Sunday in an accidental self-inflicted shooting, Vermont State Police said.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m.

Vermont State Police Lt. Lance Burnham said police on Monday are receiving conflicting reports about what caused a man's .45 caliber pistol to go off. Burnham confirmed that police are receiving some reports that the man, Zeberiah Snow, 31, of South Hero, slipped and fell in the bathroom, causing his gun to discharge. However, the Snow's report contradicts these stories, Burnham said.

The incident is not being considered suspicious, Burnham said. The man was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington on Sunday night for treatment of a gunshot wound to the hip, and he remains there on Monday morning. His injuries were not life-threatening, Burnham said.

Responders from South Hero Rescue, Vermont State Police and the Grand Isle Sheriff's Department responded to the scene.

After a South Hero volunteer fireman secured the injured man's weapon, members of South Hero Rescue entered the establishment and provided him medical attention, before transporting him to the hospital. The firearm was turned over to the Grand Isle Sheriff's Department.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
