City Building Official Injured In Accidental Shooting

Greeneville, Tn  (2-22-16)  City Building Official Jeff Woods is in stable condition in Johnson City Medical Center after an accidental shooting this morning.
Greeneville police Detective Capt. Tim Davis said that about 10:30 a.m., Woods was in the parking lot of the medical office of Dr. Philip Thwing, 400 Y St., when a .22-caliber handgun went off.
Woods was outside the city-owned Jeep and the gun was in a coat pocket inside the vehicle when the weapon went off, Davis said.
“He was standing outside of his car and the firearm was in the car and it discharged, striking him in the abdomen,” Davis said.
Woods was able to walk into the doctor’s office and ask for help. He was taken to Laughlin Memorial Hospital by Greene County-Greeneville EMS and later flown by Wings Air Rescue to Johnson City Medical Center, where he was listed this afternoon in stable condition after surgery, Davis said.
The gun may have discharged as Woods placed his coat on a seat of the Jeep as he got out of the vehicle, a city official said.
“He was alert and talking to me (after the shooting),” Davis said.
Davis said that Woods told him “the gun went off from inside the vehicle.”
The gun is not city-issued.
“We’re calling it an accidental discharge. He happened to be in the wrong place,” Davis said.

Miami-Dade police ‘hunting’ men who fatally shot boy, 6

Pinewood, Fl  (2-22-16) A 6-year-old boy was fatally shot while playing with his friends in Pinewood, just north of Miami, and police and the boy’s family are taking on the area’s entrenched anti-snitch culture in hopes of persuading witnesses to come forward.
King Carter was playing Saturday afternoon in Blue Lake Village when “two unknown black males exited a dark four-door sedan and began shooting, striking Carter. The gunmen and driver then fled the complex in the vehicle in an unknown direction,” the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement.

Police say they are looking for three black men. The make and model of their car is unknown.

“Clearly, he’s not the target. He happened to be an innocent bystander, outside playing, doing what kids do,” Miami-Dade police Director Juan Perez told CNN affiliate WPLG. “I’m angry. Our officers are angry. The community behind me’s angry, so hopefully they’re angry enough that they could provide some information that will lead to the arrests of the individuals.”

King was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he later died. Family members at the hospital began wailing upon learning the youngster had died, WPLG reported.

The boy’s father, Santonio Carter, posted a Facebook video from outside the hospital, in which he asked people to pray for him.

“Just lost my son, 6-year-old King Carter. Y’all seen me with him everyday, man,” he said before decrying the gun violence and “n**gas doing dumb s**t” in his community.

The grieving father, whose teen brother was killed in an accidental shooting in 2003, later directed his words toward his son’s killer, telling WPLG, “It’s so easy to get a gun. It’s cowards. … Where the real men at? They’re missing their daddies, and my son had a daddy and his daddy’s standing here before y’all, fed up.”

Family members described the first-grader at Van E. Blanton Elementary School as a joyful boy who loved sports, especially football, as well as cartoons, especially “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

The boy’s aunt, Tawana Akins, asked community members to attend a 2 p.m. Sunday vigil near the site of the shooting. She asked attendees to bring white candles and white balloons, and to wear “Ninja Turtles” attire, according to a Facebook post.

The area’s problems cooperating with police — particularly in the Liberty City neighborhood about a mile and a half south of where King was shot — have been well-documented, and Akins joined Perez and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez in urging witnesses to reach out to authorities.

“If you know what happened, please say something,” she said during a news conference. “A 6-year-old — just think of your life at 6. It could easily be your family next.”

The local Crime Stoppers chapter has put up $5,000 and Gimenez’s office announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the shooters’ arrests.

“We need (the community) to tell us what’s happening,” Gimenez told WPLG. “Then we can get to the bottom of it quicker, put less lives at risk and put the perpetrators behind bars.”

Akins expressed confidence that there are witnesses, stating on Facebook, “Too many people were out to not see anything. … You helped me lock up the other coward who killed my other nephew last year. Do it for us now in Jesus’ name.”

Perez seemed equally confident that his officers would find those responsible.

“Right now, we’re hunting for you. If you’re involved, you may as well turn yourself in because I don’t believe the community’s going to stand idle on this. I think the community’s going to stand tall and will hand these individuals up to us,” he said.

According to a tally from WPLG, at least 67 people age 18 or younger have been killed by gunshots in Miami-Dade County since 2013.

In December, a boy not much older than King — 7-year-old Amiere Castro — was inside his home when he was struck by a bullet from a drive-by shooting. The Miami-Dade Police Department has arrested three men in that case, according to WPLG.

Two men shot when gun goes off at Brunswick party
Injuries not life threatening, incident under investigation

Brunswick police are investigating an accidental shooting Sunday night that sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Brunswick, Me  (2-22-16)  Brunswick fire and police responded to 8 Guadalcanal Drive for the shooting at 8:57 p.m. Officers arrived at the residence to find two injured men and administered first aid until medical personnel arrived.

According to Brunswick Police Cmdr. Marc Hagan, a 29-year-old  West Bath man showed a 28-year-old Brunswick man his unloaded Sig Sauer 9 millimeter handgun.

When the West Bath man reloaded the weapon, “it fired a round that went through his hand,” Hagan states in a press release. “The round then continued through the other parties’ leg, and struck a refrigerator in the residence.”

The 29-year-old of West Bath who fired the gun was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with a gunshot wound to his hand. The 28-year-old Brunswick man was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with a gunshot wound to his leg. Neither injury is considered life threatening.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. Police did not release the names of either of the men who were shot with the single bullet.

Hagan said there were at least seven people at the party and  the man who fired the gun had been drinking alcohol. He could not say if alcohol is a factor at this point but stressed, “Obviously anyone who has had any amount of alcohol should not be handling a firearm.”

Hagan said both injured men were guests at the gathering. The Brunswick man who was shot in the leg had first showed the West Bath man his firearm, and the West Bath man in turn showed the Brunswick man his weapon. It was unclear if both men normally carry firearms. There was no confrontation involved, Hagan said.

Florida Teen Accused of Killing His 10-Year-Old Sister

Panama City, Fl  (2-22-16)   The death of a 10-year-old girl, allegedly at the hands of her 15-year-old brother, stunned employees of a Florida sheriff's office who had tried to help the family in the past, an authority with the office said Monday.

"About three or four years ago, one of our deputies discovered the family living in basically a pole barn with walls that were covered with tarps," said Maj. Tommy Ford of the Bay County Sheriff's office. "We went out there and helped to put walls up and brought some food and Christmas presents for the kids."

Deputies arrested the 15-year-old boy on Sunday afternoon after finding his sister's body in a field near the home. The girl was reported missing Sunday morning. The Associated Press does not generally name juveniles accused of crimes.

Ford said the boy became a suspect during the search and that he later confessed to killing his sister. In an arrest affidavit released by the department Monday afternoon, an officer who interviewed the boy wrote that he first told investigators that he shot his sister about 3 a.m. Sunday after mistaking her for a deer. The boy later said he saw someone attack his sister and he accidentally hit her while trying to fire at the attacker. The boy changed his story a third time and said that he accidentally shot his sister while trying to teach her how to shoot his rifle.

The boy also told investigators that he cleaned his sister's body, changed her clothing and moved her to the field where the body was later found.

Ford said prosecutors could charge the 15-year-old as an adult.

Earlier Monday, Sheriff Frank McKeithen described the boy in a news conference as "hardcore," saying he acted much older than 15 when confronted by authorities.
