(2 wounded/ 3 dead/ 1 discharge) Group of teens messing with a gun, one dies

Cops: Girl, 16, charged in accidental shooting that killed teen

Lawrenceville, Ga   (2-11-16)   Gwinnett County police on Thursday charged a 16-year-old girl with involuntary manslaughter in the reportedly accidental shooting death of a 19-year-old man.

Police said the girl, whose identity wasn’t released, hurriedly attempted to drive the victim, Dominic Smith of Lawrenceville, to the hospital, leading to a two-mile pursuit with city police after midnight. Paramedics instead took him after police stopped the car on West Pike Street, but he died later in the morning, said Cpl. Deon Washington of Gwinnett police.

The suspect is being housed at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center, also charged with reckless conduct.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that six or seven teens were hanging out in a parking lot in the 1600 block of Balvaird Drive, in unincorporated Lawrenceville, when the shooting happened. At least one of the teens, the suspect, was handling a firearm in an “irresponsible manner and unintentionally shot the victim,” Washington said.

Police are seeking other witnesses and the firearm. The other teens reportedly fled, leaving the girl with the victim.

“This is a very tragic and unfortunate situation that could have been avoided,” Washington said. “It highlights one of the worst situations that could happen when teens unlawfully handle firearms.”

Report of accidental shooting leads police to robbery suspect

Columbia, Mo  (2-11-16)  While responding to an apparent accidental shooting Wednesday, police arrested a 20-year-old man suspected in a robbery Tuesday that ended with two people jumping from a moving car.

Police arrested Tavion R. Jones as they investigated an apparent accidental shooting at Royal Inn, 1800 I-70 Drive S.W., at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Columbia police spokeswoman Bryana Larimer said in a news release. When Jones was in the patrol car for questioning, officers smelled marijuana and found a bag of pot where he was sitting, marijuana residue on his tongue and an empty bag with a torn corner, she said.

Jones was arrested on suspicion of three counts each of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, kidnapping and first-degree assault and one count each of marijuana possession and misdemeanor tampering with evidence for his alleged role in a Tuesday robbery in the 5300 block of Old Millers Road East, Larimer said. Jones also had a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest, she said.

Officers at the shooting scene Wednesday said the victim was shot in the arm and his injuries were not life-threatening. No arrests have been made in connection with that incident. Larimer said by phone Wednesday that police believe the man accidentally shot himself. It was not clear whether Jones knew the man who was shot and whether Jones was in the room at the time of the shooting.

Jones is accused of having two people give him and another man a ride to Old Millers Road East on Tuesday before Jones pulled a gun and robbed them. Two people in the car jumped out as it rolled down the street, and the vehicle ended up in a ditch. Jones and the man who had been with him ran, but police detained the other man for questioning before releasing him. One of the people who jumped out of the moving car suffered injuries to his face.

Cole County authorities allege that on Dec. 22, 2014, Jones shot two people in a drive-by in Jefferson City. He had been free on a $75,000 bond until Wednesday.

Jones was a suspected accomplice in a July 2014 shooting in Columbia that injured two women, but a Boone County assistant prosecuting attorney dropped two charges against him because the victims would not testify. Jones was released from the Boone County Jail on those charges on Dec. 2, 2014. It was unclear if he has an attorney in the latest arrest.

Shot fired inside Southside Applebee's
Suspected shooter taken into custody after leaving scene, Police say

Jacksonville, Fl  (2-11-16)  A shot was fired Thursday at a restaurant on Jacksonville's Southside, leaving a bullet lodged in a wall, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The man suspected of firing the shot was later arrested while driving down State Road A1A. He is charged with DUI.

Police said four people were sitting at a booth drinking inside the Applebee's restaurant on J. Turner Butler Boulevard near Philips Highway, and a gunshot was fired. One of the patrons was in a wheelchair, police said.

A staff member told police that a man fired at another man sitting at his table.

After the round went off, there was a struggle over the gun and one of the customers got it and gave it to a staff member as the group left, police said.

Police were called to the restaurant and used surveillance video to find the description of the shooting suspect and the tag number of the vehicle he left in.

Officers were headed to his home and spotted him on A1A, taking him into custody on the DUI charge. Police said he admitted to firing one shot, but they are working to determine if the shooting was accidental or if the man was trying to shoot someone.

Police said officers arrived at the restaurant quickly after the call, but there were no patrons left or witnesses to the shooting when they got there. Police said anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500, and a detective will come and take a statement.

Cops probe fatal shooting

Madison, Ga   (2-11-16)   A domestic violence complaint on Aqua Road elevated into a death investigation after a man either intentionally or accidentally shot himself in the head. His wife was struck by the same bullet in the arm.

According to Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports, Robert T. Edwards, 41, was pronounced dead at Morgan Memorial Hospital after a single gunshot from a Taurus 9mm pistol struck him in the head. Reports state that his wife, Jamie Renee Edwards, 48, was struck in her right bicep with a “through and through” wound. Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley said the bullet came to rest in the wall of the bedroom of the couple’s Aqua Road residence. Capt. Chris Bish, Investigations Division, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, said investigators are treating the shooting as “a death investigation.” “We are trying to determine if it was accidental or intentional.”

The shooting occurred, reports state, at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 6. Bish said the couple and other family members had been at a Madison restaurant earlier in the evening and on the way home Robert Edwards stopped to aid a stranded motorist at the BP gas station on Highway 83. Later that night, Bish said, the couple began to argue and the argument became physical. He said both had consumed alcohol. An autopsy was completed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab on Monday, Bish said, and preliminary results show that the fatal shot “appears to be self–inflicted.” Bish said the “series of disputes that led up to the shooting” were on–going. The dispute at some point turned physical, Bish said, and investigators believe Jamie Edwards “may have had her arm wrapped around his head,” when the shot was fired. Jamie Edwards was treated at Morgan Memorial and released. Bish said Robert Edwards was killed with a pistol that belonged to his wife and investigators are attempting to try and understand why he had her pistol and her holster. “It appears it was the wife’s weapon,” Bish said. “He had her weapon on his right hip.”

(Jan 9 shooting)
UPDATE: Man who 'accidentally' shot 8-yr-old indicted, arrested for reckless homicide

Jeffersonville, In,   (2-11-16)  A grand jury has indicted a man who claims he accidentally shot and killed an 8-year-old boy while handling his gun and, late Thursday afternoon, he was taken into custody.

Elgin Anders was indicted on one count of reckless homicide Thursday afternoon, shortly afterward online records indicated he was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections.

He has been charged with one count of reckless homicide.

The incident took place on Saturday, Jan. 9, in the Shawnee neighborhood.

Family members say 8-year-old Andre Lamont O'Neal, Jr. was a student at Northaven Elementary School in Jeffersonville, Ind.

"He was a good little boy. Smart and bright," his father, Andre Lamont O'Neal, Sr., said.

Andre Sr. says he received a call around 2 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, saying that his son had been taken to Kosair Children's Hospital.

"When I went in there, they told me what had happened with my son," Andre Sr. said. "He had got shot, and they tried to do everything they could do, but there wasn't nothing they could do."

Family members say the child had been dropped off at a babysitter's home on North 34th Street. While there at a gathering with several other kids and adults, police say the 8-year-old was somehow shot.

"We're still in the very early stages of our investigation. We don't know whether this was accidental or what we have," said LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, back in January.

Anders admits it was his gun that shot the little boy. He would not say why he had his gun out, but that he was trying to put it away when it accidentally fired.

"I didn't need it in my hand," Anders said. "I came out to the grill. I had barbecue sauce on my fingers. I licked the sauce off my fingers. It just slipped right out of my fingers."

Anders says he panicked and drove Andre Jr. to the hospital for treatment.

"It was a real shocking moment. We didn't really know what to do, so we took him ourselves. I held him to my chest," Anders said.

Anders says he is a father himself and would never harm a child.

O'Neal's family wants to know why an ambulance wasn't called and whether paramedics could have saved Andre Jr.'s life.

  1. One must know when and how to use guns when they have them. Those who are having guns must know that having guns means that guns kill to, so while they are using them they must be trained enough that they don't use it unnecessarily and harm others.
