Charlotte police arrest accused shooter in WSSU killing

By John Hinton Winston-Salem Journal (11-2-15)

A former student at Winston-Salem State University was arrested Monday and charged with murder in the shooting death of another student on Sunday, authorities said.
Jarrett Jerome Moore, 21, of Charlotte also was charged with possession of weapons on school grounds in the death of Anthony White Jr., 19, a WSSU sophomore, Capt. Catrina Thompson of the Winston-Salem Police Department said at a news conference at the Bowman Gray Stadium Field House at WSSU.
Moore attended WSSU in the 2014-15 academic year, Aaron Singleton, a university spokesman, said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers arrested Moore early Monday morning on outstanding warrants on charges unrelated to the shooting, Thompson said. Another WSSU student, who hasn’t been identified, was wounded in the Sunday shooting. That student was treated at a local hospital for an injury that wasn’t life-threatening.
Investigators have determined that the shooting involved only Moore, White and the injured student, Thompson said. Authorities are not looking for any other suspects, she said.

“The Winston-Salem Police Department will not tolerate violent crime in our city,” Thompson said.
Investigators are seeking witnesses and continue to gather evidence in this case.
The shooting “was unusual occurrence at WSSU,” police Chief Barry Rountree said.
“This is a tragic event, and isolated to the campus of WSSU,” Rountree said. “The public should also know that this event was contained to the campus, and there is not a threat to the general public or any other local university campus.”
Moore was being held Monday night in the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, according to the jail’s website. Bond information for him was not immediately available.
Rountree and Thompson declined to answer reporters’ questions about the circumstances that led to the shooting or any details about the wounded student, saying they wanted to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
The shooting was reported about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the area of Lot W near Wilson Hall and Gleason-Hairston Terrace on campus, police said. White, who was majoring in information technology, was not responsive when officers found him. The wounded student was found nearby.
After the news of Moore’s arrest was made public, WSSU Chancellor Elwood Robinson posted a message on his Facebook page.
Robinson wrote in part that, “The shooting is a tragedy and a tremendous loss to the Winston-Salem State University community. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, classmates, faculty and friends of Anthony.”
Robinson wrote that White was enthusiastic about his future, and often shared inspirational messages on social media.
“The loss of such a bright young man is truly tragic,” the chancellor said. “As a Ram family, we must pull together during this most difficult time. We must support one other, care for one another, and uplift one another through the coming days and weeks.”
The shooting doesn’t define WSSU, Robinson wrote.

“It does not reflect the loving, caring atmosphere we all know exists on our campus,” he wrote.
Many WSSU students declined Monday to talk about the shooting. A sign posted in Wilson Hall advised students not to comment “if you are asked to give a statement from anyone outside of WSSU.”
However, Althea Bates, a WSSU junior from Fayetteville, told a Journal reporter that the shooting had deeply affected students. Bates said she often saw White on campus, and she last saw Moore on campus last spring.
“It’s torn up the campus,” Bates said of the shooting. “All of our hearts are broken.”

Student shot at West Orange High School in Winter Garden

WINTER GARDEN -- Last Updated: Wednesday, December 04, 2013, 10:28 PM
A 15-year-old student at West Orange High School was shot Wednesday afternoon, and Orange County deputies said they have detained a 17-year-old suspect.

Sheriff Jerry Demings said 15-year-old Ja'Roderick Smith was shot in the face and abdomen by a 17-year-old male during a fight outside the school, in the bus loop area, around 1:15 p.m.
Smith was given first aid, and was alert when he was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, West Orange Principal Douglas Szcinski told parents in a mass voice mail message.
Wednesday was Smith's first day at West Orange High School. The ninth-grader transferred from Olympia High School.
The suspect was detained around 3:30 p.m. near the nearby Tildenville neighborhood, but Demings said deputies did not immediately recover the gun used in the shooting.

We are not naming the 17-year-old suspect unless he is charged as an adult. Please refer to our Crime Guidelines for more information.

West Orange High School is located on Beulah Road, just southwest of the interchange between Florida's Turnpike and State Road 429. After the shooting, other students were bused to Ocoee High School, at 1925 Ocoee Crown Point Parkway, to be picked up by parents.

The following is a transcript of the voice mail sent to parents:

Good afternoon, parents. This is Douglas Szcinski, principal of West Orange High School.

Our school is currently on a lockdown. We are following all safety procedures and precautions. There has been an incident in which one student was shot. That student is alert and being transported to the hospital. Law enforcement is on scene working the situation.

We will provide more information as it becomes available. Thank you.

A similar message was posted on West Orange High School's Facebook page.

School will be in session Thursday, with grief counselors on campus. A prayer will be held at 6:50 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the school. All extracurricular activities Wednesday night, including a basketball game at Dr. Phillips High School, were cancelled.

Orange County School Superintendent Barbara Jenkins and Mayor Teresa Jacobs went to the hospital to meet with Smith's family. The boy is expected to survive.

“His mother is extremely relieved," said Dr. Jenkins. "Obviously, it’s traumatizing for a mother to hear that kind of news but extremely grateful, very relieved.  Everyone thankful to god that he’s just okay, that the wounds seem very minor.”

A parent waiting for her son, Alicia Hutta, said he called her husband from another student's phone on one of the buses waiting at the school.

"We need better plans, in case something like this happens where the kids can meet parents, some kind of structure," Hutta said.

Student shot at California high school, suspect in custody

(1-10-2013)
TAFT, Calif. (AP) --
A student was shot and wounded at a rural San Joaquin Valley high school Thursday and another student was taken into custody, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School, a community of fewer than 10,000 people amidst oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The student who was shot was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield, said Ray Pruitt, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff's Department. There was no immediate word on the victim's condition.

Pruitt said the suspect is a student, and a shotgun was used in the attack.

Kern County Fire Department Eric Coughran told KBAK-TV that another person suffered some type of injuries in the incident but refused medical attention.

KERO-TV Bakersfield reported that the station received phone calls from people inside the school who hid in closets.

It was not immediately clear how many students are enrolled at the high school, which teaches 9th through 12th grades.

The Taft shooting came less than a month after a gunman massacred 20 children and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., then killed himself.

That shooting prompted President Barack Obama to promise new efforts to curb gun violence. Vice President Joe Biden, who was placed in charge of the initiative, said Tuesday in Washington, D.C., that he would deliver new policy proposals to the president by next week.
