Authorities asking for information in 'accidental' hunting shooting
BY ANDREW LACOMBE, FOX 11 NEWS
TOWN OF MOUNT MORRIS — (11-24-15) A Waushara County deer hunter is dead and investigators want to know who fired the bullet.
"We believe it's a hunting accident," said Jeff Nett, the Waushara County Sheriff.
Nett says say a stray bullet killed a 56-year-old man just before sunset Monday in an area north of Redgranite.
"We're just looking to get some information from the public to help us determine who was in the area," he said.
The victim, Gregory Welk of Mount Morris, was hunting on his private property. Investigators believe the deadly shot came from public hunting land across the road around 4:20 p.m.
The public land is north of State Highway 21. It's on the west side of 24th Rd. and south of Brown Deer Ave.
Waushara County investigators and the Wisconsin DNR searched the land Tuesday. Nett says they "didn't really come up with anything."
Authorities, along with area hunters, want to know who else was in the area Monday afternoon.
"It's really odd that something like this could happen that this stray bullet just comes right through the trees like that," said Donald Taylor, a hunter from Redgranite.
Nett says Welk was wearing blaze orange. The sheriff believes the deadly bullet possibly started hundreds of yards away and crossed the road into thick woods.
"We don't think whoever fired the round actually saw the victim because of the undergrowth," he said.
According to Nett, a bullet hit Welk in the chest while he was walking about 40 feet in from the road. Then Welk called his wife and 911. Before Welk died at a hospital, he said he'd seen some people in the area.
"We did have a report from the victim that he saw two people get into a darker colored pickup truck," said Nett.
Welk said the truck was a model from the late-1990s to early-2000s.
"He saw somebody drive away, whether these people are the ones that fired the shot are not, we don't know," added Nett.
The sheriff says it's another reminder about the importance of safety while hunting.
"The thing to keep in mind is the backstop," he said. "I think when anybody's firing any type of fire arm, you want to be cognizant of what's beyond your target or what's beyond what you're shooting at. And this may have been the case."
Taylor says it's always on his mind.
"I try to set up so I can shoot towards out in the woods where I've got something to block the shot, you know," he said.
Welk was a father and he owned an area construction company.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Waushara County Sheriff's Office at (920) 787-3321.

Deputies: Man trying to kill opossum shoots himself in leg
VOLUSIA COUNTYA FLA. (11-24-15) Volusia County man trying to kill a nuisance opossum Monday morning ended up at the hospital when a bullet he fired at the animal bounced back and made a hole in his leg, sheriff's deputies said.
Alexander Smith suffered a bullet wound to his right calf when he crawled under his mobile home to follow the escaping marsupial and fired two bullets, deputies said.
“Alexander Smith reported he accidentally shot himself while attempting to dispatch a nuisance opossum on his property,” deputies wrote in their report.
The deputies were called to the North Janice Lane home near Ormond Beach where the incident occurred early Monday.
Deputies learned that the animal showed up at the home at 12:01 a.m. Monday and Smith’s wife alerted him to its presence. The night creature went under the mobile home, so Smith grabbed his Winchester .22 caliber rifle and crawled under the house “in an attempt to dispatch the animal,” deputies said.
Smith fired one shot and missed the opossum. He then fired a second round at the animal and felt a sharp pain in his right calf. Smith looked at his calf and realized the bullet had ricocheted off of an unknown object, entered his calf and exited by the right part of his shin, investigators said.
Smith’s wife then drove him to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach to have his bullet wound treated, deputies said.
All indications are that the opossum got away, according to the report.
