Accidental shooting leaves shooter's 15-year-old cousin dead

IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) 11-20-15 -  Around 9:30 Thursday night, Iberville Sheriff's deputies went out to a home on Stassi Rd. responding to a call for shots fired. When they arrived, they found a 15-year-old boy, who had been shot once in the head and died.

"There was some alcohol involved earlier that evening, horse play and next thing you know, gun was pulled out. he did not realize they had one in the chamber and during the horse play with the gun, the shot was fired and struck his young, 15-yr-old in the face area," said Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.

The boy's cousin, Shawn Griffin, 23, of Plaquemine has been arrested for the killing. Sheriff Stassi said it's an unfortunate shooting because Griffin was playing around with the gun and thought it was empty, accidentally shooting and killing his own cousin. He's now charged with negligent homicide.

"This is not like a hunting accident out in the woods where we might wait for the grand jury to come back. In this particular case, because you know you have a gun, you know you're pointing it at an individual, that's why he was charged with negligent homicide in this case," said Sheriff Stassi.

People in the community said Griffin is an Iraq war veteran and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. They add it's just an unfortunate situation and one that's left a family mourning not only over the victim, but also for the alleged shooter.

Griffin has a $10,000 bond set.

LUBOBCK, TX (11-20-15)     Lubbock County Sheriff’s Deputies and EMS responded to the ERCA emergency room at 82nd Street and Slide Road just after 5:00 pm Thursday for the report of a 2-year-old boy who had been shot.

Because the shooting happened in Lubbock County, the sheriff’s office was taking the lead in the investigation.  The child was brought to ERCA in a private vehicle.  The child was transferred by EMS from the ERCA to University Medical Center.

EverythingLubbock.com initially reported that the child was shot more than once.  However, it was a single gunshot that resulted in multiple wounds.

Lt. Bryan Taylor said the the bullet went through an arm, abdomen, and side.

Taylor said investigators believed the child came in contact with a loaded gun at home in Southern Lubbock County.   The shooting was investigated as accidental.  But, Taylor said it is standard procedure for the case to be presented to the Criminal District attorney for review.

Taylor described the injuries as "non life-threatening."  Names of those involved were not released.

Police log: Stray bullet

Flagstaff Ari (11-20-15) .A Flagstaff family got a big scare this month when a stray bullet shot through their apartment.

According to the police report, a teenage resident who was home alone in her apartment in the 200 block of West Oakmont Avenue was standing in the hallway when she heard a loud bang and felt something rush past her right leg sometime between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Nov. 6. At first, she said, she thought she had been shot. When she realized she was uninjured, she immediately called her mother and hid in the bathroom for the next 20 minutes.

The teen and her mother had never heard a gunshot before, so they did not know what had happened until this past Monday, when the mother discovered a spent 9 millimeter bullet on the floor underneath a dresser. The bullet appeared to have pierced an interior wall, leaving a tiny hole, and continued through the first layer of side paneling on the dresser before it was stopped by the side of the bottom drawer and fell to the ground.

Officers spoke to the residents of a neighboring apartment. One of the men told police that on Nov. 6, he was showing his roommate the new handgun he had just purchased when he accidentally shot through a door jam and into the wall he shared with the victims' apartment. The suspect told police he thought there was a cinder block wall between the two apartments that would stop the bullet before it could hurt anyone. He became apologetic when he learned that was not the case.

The suspect faces possible charges of disorderly conduct with a weapon. The investigation is ongoing.
