Teen deer hunter accidentally shot by friend in Jay County

PORTLAND, Ind. (11-18-15)  - An Indiana teenager is recovering after being shot by his hunting partner in Jay County.

Conservation officers say the 15-year-old boy was hunting with a 16-year-old boy Tuesday afternoon in Portland when they decided to split up. As they walked, a deer jumped up and ran between the two hunters and the older boy took a shot.

Investigators say the bullet traveled 75 yards through the woods and struck the younger hunter in the leg, near his knee. He was taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers say both teens were wearing hunter orange clothing, but the boy who shot said he could not see the victim when he fired. Both boys are licensed hunters who completed the appropriate hunter education.

The Jay County Sheriff's Office, Jay County EMS and Salamonia Fire Department assisted conservation officers at the scene.

Conservation officers remind hunters to "always identify what is beyond your target before firing a shot, and to never shoot unless you have a safe backstop."
