Teen hospitalized after accidental shooting
COLUMBUS (WCMH) — (11-17-15) A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized after shooting himself in the leg late Monday night.
It happened around midnight at a home on Benfield Avenue in Columbus, when the boy went into his grandparents’ safe and took out a loaded gun.
Investigators say he was playing with the gun and shot himself in the thigh. He is expected to recover.
It is unlikely that that charges will be filed, according to police.

Police: Rock Hill boy, 3, killed by self-inflicted gunshot wound
BY TEDDY KULMALA AND ANDREW DYS
ROCK HILL (11-16-15) A toddler died Sunday afternoon after he got hold of a gun and shot himself in a Rock Hill home, police say.
Savion Barrow, 3, was taken by EMS ambulance from his home on Amelia Avenue to Piedmont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff shortly after his arrival, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said.
Capt. Mark Bollinger, spokesman for the Rock Hill Police Department, said Savion somehow got his hands on the gun and shot himself.
Police give details in death of Rock Hill boy who found gun, shot himself
Police say 3-year-old Savion Barrow found a gun and shot himself at his Rock Hill home. This is the second case in Rock Hill within two months in which a toddler fired a loaded weapon.
Sunday’s shooting was the second by a toddler in Rock Hill in just a month.
Last month, Rock Hill police charged the great-aunt of a 2-year-old boy with unlawful carrying of a gun after the child was able to get the gun while in the woman’s car, accidentally shooting the child’s grandmother. The grandmother survived.
A man who answered the door at the Amelia Avenue home Monday said he was Savion’s uncle. He shared pictures of Savion, but said he didn’t have “too much to talk about.”
Neighbors were stunned Monday that the boy had been killed, and confirmed that they had heard – as police have confirmed – that somehow he was able to get his hands on a gun.
Jacquie McCann, who lives next door to the family, said she could only cry when she heard what happened. She said Savion had an “infectious” laugh and smile.
“We literally just moved to Rock Hill within weeks of when he was born,” she said. “It’s an interesting perspective from a 3-year-old point of view. It was fun to watch him grow.”
McCann said Savion’s family were their first friends after moving onto the block.
“They’re good people; it’s just tragic,” she said. “We’re just gonna give them time to do what they’ve got to do, then we’ll go over and see if there’s anything else we can do to help them.”
Other neighbors were also shocked at Savion’s death, recalling how he often played outside.
“It is just terrible,” said neighbor Tonya Hamm.
Hamm said police were at the house for hours on Sunday.
Champagne Howell, 20, walked along the flurry of news vans and reporters on Amelia Avenue Monday. She has lived in the neighborhood for several months and said she often saw Savion outside playing.
“He used to always come up to me and call me his girlfriend,” she said with a chuckle. “For him to be 3 and talking about a girlfriend – you know.”
There was at least one other child, a 10-year-old girl, and at least four adults in the home at the time of the shooting, according to a police report.
An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
No one has been charged in connection with the shooting, Bollinger said.
“The detectives don’t want a lot of information out because it’s an active investigation,” he said.

Beer pong blunder leaves two men shot
Chicago (7-8-15) Beer pong is all fun and games until someone gets their gun out.
And if you want proof, here’s exhibit A: a suburban man spent his birthday in police custody after he tried to distract his beer-pong opponent with a 9mm handgun and accidentally shot two people, DNAinfo reports.
Manus Shannon, 27, of the 12800 block of South Irving Avenue in Blue Island at a backyard party in the 9200 block of South Forest, faces one felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm after he shot the 20 and 24 year olds, according to Chicago Police.
DNAinfo reported:
Shannon began waving the gun in his opponent’s face to distract the 24-year-old South Chicago man during his turn, Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Monday.
The opponent pushed Shannon away, and as he did, the gun went off — striking the opponent in his finger and a 20-year-old Roseland man in his shoulder, prosecutors said. According to Antonietti, the 20-year-old was sitting nearby texting at the time and not involved with the game.
They took themselves to Roseland Community Hospital about 9:20 p.m. and their conditions stabilized, police said.
Shannon was ordered held on a $100,000 bond in court Monday, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. His next court date is scheduled for July 10.
