Moorhead hunter airlifted after accidental shooting

NEAR DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (11-16-15) – A Moorhead hunter was seriously injured after his brother-in-law accidentally shot him in the leg on the outskirts of Detroit Lakes over the weekend, according to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Tim Eggebraaten.

Donald Dorff, 57, was life-flighted out of Detroit Lakes on Saturday evening to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The call for help came in shortly before 6 p.m. from hunting property on the southwest side of Long Lake.

According to Eggebraaten, Dorff and his brother-in-law, Dennis Mahoney, 69, of Plymouth were attempting to unload a pistol when it malfunctioned.

“The two men were looking at it and trying to clear the malfunction, and it discharged at that point,” Eggebraaten said. “The officers that responded and talked to the victim and the other gentleman (Mahoney), determined that there were no arguments or anything to indicate there was anything intentional at all.”

Eggebraaten says the bullet went through Dorff’s leg and out the other side.

“It looks like it did hit the artery, but he was conscious and alert and answering questions,” Eggebraaten said.

Police: Elks Lodge shooting ruled accidental, not linked to Franklin Borough shooting

By Jocelyn Brumbaugh jbrumbaugh@tribdem.com
(11-16-15)  Two men have been charged after a shooting incident at a Johnstown Elks Lodge early Saturday, which Johnstown police have ruled accidental.
Tresean Wiggins, 25, of Solomon Homes in Johnstown and Rudolph B. Davis, 23, of Newburgh, New York, were both charged with providing false information and identification to police after the incident Saturday.
Capt. Andrew Frear of the Johnstown Police Department said the shooting has been ruled accidental and not related to a shooting at the bar formerly known as Johnnie No-Nex in Franklin Borough around the same time Saturday.
According to a police affidavit, Johnstown police responded to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center after 3:30 a.m. when Davis arrived for a gunshot wound to the upper leg. During interviews, both Davis and Wiggins provided officers with false names and indicated that an unknown suspect had shot Davis in the leg at the Elks lodge on Horner Street.
Officers later found a pair of men's boxer underwear in a plastic bag in a Dumpster outside of Solomon Homes that were bloody and were disfigured in the area Davis was shot. Davis left the hospital before officers confirmed his identity and was later located at Wiggins' residence at the Solomon Homes, the affidavit says.
Investigators say they believe Davis was in possession of a .22-caliber firearm that discharged and struck him in the upper left leg. Davis was wanted by New York State Division of Parole for a parole violation from a 2012 robbery conviction that prevented him from obtaining a license to carry a firearm, police said.
Upon executing a search warrant at Wiggins' apartment, officers found 33 stamp bags of heroin, $700 in cash, Wiggins' identification and a .22-caliber handgun, which was loaded. The affidavit says Wiggins took ownership of the heroin and told police he was selling it.
Davis has been charged with persons not to possess a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with/fabricating physical evidence, obstructing law enforcement, false identification to a law enforcement officer and two counts of making false reports.
Wiggins is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture or deliver, hindering apprehension, tampering with/fabricating physical evidence, obstructing law enforcement, false identification to law enforcement, intent to possess a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Man accidentally shoots self while hunting in Casco Twp.

(11-16-15)  A 30-year-old man accidentally shot himself while hunting in Casco Township Sunday.

The incident happened Sunday evening, according to Capt. David Malloch, field coordinator for southern Michigan for the Department of Natural Resources law enforcement division.

Malloch said the man hunting in a tree stand took the safety off his gun to shoot a coyote. The man was unable to get a shot, and failed to put his safety back on.

When the man was ready to leave the tree stand he began to attach a drop line to his shotgun to lower it to the ground. While attaching the line, the shotgun went off.

A slug entered and exited the man’s thigh, then entered and exited his calf, Malloch said.

The man called a friend and the DNR was contacted to respond.

A conservation officer responded to the tree stand and applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg. The officer transported the man out of the hunting area to EMS.

The man was taken to a Macomb hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

Malloch said the accidental shooting was the second one during regular firearm season, which began Sunday. He said a man in Calhoun County also suffered non-fatal injuries after an accidental shooting Sunday morning.
