Accidental Shooting

CADILLAC – (12-3-15)  A 3-year-old Cadillac boy is expected to recover after he was accidentally shot in the arm by his 7-year-old brother Monday morning, according to Cadillac Detective/Lt. Todd Golnick.

The shooting at the family's apartment at 607 Cadillac Shores Drive was reported to police shortly after 9 a.m. Monday.

No charges or citations are expected to be issued, Golnick said, declining to release the names of the boys and their parents.

While the father was at work and the mother was caring for the two boys' three other siblings, the older boy got hold of ammunition that was stored high in a kitchen cupboard, Golnick said. The older boy then went upstairs into his parents' bedroom, where a hunting rifle was hidden, he said. He loaded the weapon and began playing with it. It accidentally discharged, the bullet striking the 3-year-old's arm, Golnick said.

The boy was transported by Northflight EMS to Mercy Hospital, where his condition is unknown.

“His wounds don't appear to be life-threatening, but he has very serious injuries to an arm,” Golnick said.

The children's father is legally permitted to own a gun, Golnick said, adding the parents did everything they could possibly do to keep the weapons away from the children, including storing the gun and ammo separately, hiding the gun and keeping the ammo in a place where the children couldn't immediately access it. But there was no gun safe or gun lock for the rifle, police said.

Cadillac police were wrapping up the investigation on Monday. They were assisted by the Wexford County Sheriff's Office and the Cadillac Fire Department.

Child Suffers Gunshot Wound; Believed To Be Accidental

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (11-30-15)  A child was injured in what was believed to be an accidental shooting Monday night.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said a child about 4 years old shot himself in the arm at a home on Whittset Road.

They said a father was cooking in the kitchen when he heard a gunshot. He went to a bedroom where he found the child with a gun shot wound to the arm.

Officers believed the wound was "through and through" and didn't hit bone or vital organs. The child was still transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Detectives were still at the home, waiting for a warrant to enter the crime scene. They speculated the child got a hold of gun and accidentally shot himself.

Father charged in shooting death of daughter will appear in court

ATLANTA Ga. (WRDW) -- (11-30-15)  An Atlanta father facing murder charges will be in court Monday after his 6-year-old daughter shot and killed herself.

Our CBS affiliate in Atlanta, CBS46, reported Demarqo Smith was arrested after police said his daughter, Ja'Mecca Smith, found a loaded gun between sofa cushions and accidentally shot and killed herself Saturday.

Smith has been charged with reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter.

Detectives are not sure who to blame for her death yet. Police said several people besides the girl were inside the home, including her father, a teenager, and other small children. The responding officers said they were originally told the father accidentally shot his daughter.

Friends and family gathered for a vigil Sunday night for Ja'Mecca. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses.

Boy, 5, accidentally shoots himself

A 5-year-old boy is expected to recover after shooting himself in the leg Thursday night with a handgun he found in an apartment he is living in with his mother and her boyfriend.

BALTIC (11-27-15)   A 5-year-old boy is expected to recover after shooting himself in the leg Thursday night with a handgun he found in an apartment he is living in with his mother and her boyfriend.

The boyfriend, 27-year-old Adam D. Bays, of Baltic, was arrested Thursday night and is being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail on child endangering charges.

Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Orvis Campbell said deputies received a call at 6:55 p.m. Thursday night of an accidental shooting at the apartment complex at 102 Baltic Haus Drive.

He said the boy discovered a 9mm Ruger on a dresser, picked it up and unintentionally shot himself in his groin. The bullet passed through the boy’s leg and came to rest under a dresser in a bedroom.
The boy was responsive with Sugarcreek EMS personnel and was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery Thursday night.

Campbell said the boy is in good condition and is expected to recover from his injuries that caused minor damage.

Bays claimed the gun was locked up, but Campbell said there was no evidence of a lock to the gun cabinet and his story conflicts with how the boy said he was able to take possession of the gun. Deputies also seized multiple other guns from the apartment.

Campbell said Bays has no known criminal record and has a conceal-carry permit issued out of Holmes County. The permit was confiscated and will be returned to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff records show that in June while investigating an unrelated call, deputies discovered a loaded gun in the living room of the home and ordered Bays to lock it up.

Children Services was notified of the situation, and other children living in the home were given temporary placement with a relative. The agency also was made aware of unsanitary conditions in the apartment.

Bays likely will be held in jail until Monday, Campbell said, when a charge of third-degree felony child endangering is expected.
