ROSEBURG MAN CITED AND RELEASED FOLLOWING ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

Roseburg, Or.  (12-7-15)   Roseburg Police have provided an update on the case of the man accused of accidently discharging a firearm while in the room of a downtown motel on Friday afternoon.
A report from RPD says that 52 year old Mark Waldrop was arrested in the case. Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch now says that several people were almost hit when the bullet went through the window of the room at about 1:15 p.m.

The bullet did strike the man’s own hand. He was taken to Mercy Medical and later to Sacred Heart Medical at Riverbend in Springfield for non-life threatening injuries.  While he was charged for five counts of recklessly endangering another, the man was cited and released following the incident. Roseburg Police had earlier said that he would be going to jail following the medical treatment.

The incident at the motel on Southeast Stephens brought in a large police presence when the suspect allegedly ignored commands by police to come out of his room.

Police: Man, 20, dies in self-inflicted gun accident

ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- (12-7-15)  An incident involving a man fatally shooting himself in the head late Saturday is considered accidental.

Cory Newville, 20, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while with friends, Kent County Undersheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young said. An investigation shows that the group was drinking, she added.

It happened around 10:53 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at a home on Rector Street NE in Algoma Township.

The group of people Newville was with left him just after the shooting, thinking they could get in trouble, LaJoye-Young said. Another individual discovered Newville and contacted police immediately. Authorities arrived shortly thereafter.

Newville was pronounced dead at a Grand Rapids hospital. LaJoye-Young said a toxicology report and gunpowder testing is ongoing.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department says Newville recently got a handgun and was playing with it. Lee Newville, Cory's brother, confirms to WZZM that Cory recently bought the gun and was showing it to friends when the accidental shooting happened.

Witnesses to the shooting were located and are fully cooperating with police. The investigation is ongoing.

A friend who went to school with Newville, who wished not to be named, said the victim was a fun person. She pointed out a GoFundMe page to raise money for Newville's family.

"He always had a smile on his face," she said.

5-month-old accidentally shot in arm

CONYERS, GA. — (12-7-15) A 5-month old infant was shot in the arm this weekend when her mother accidentally discharged a shotgun after hearing a noise outside the family’s home.

Cpl. Michael Camp with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office said the 18-year-old woman grabbed a shotgun around 1 a.m. Sunday for protection after she heard a noise outside the Frontier Drive house.

Camp said it appears the mother had her finger on the trigger as she was attempting to take the safety off the gun.

The gun fired near the baby’s crib and pellets hit the infant’s arm. The mother called 911 and EMS quickly arrived and transported the child to Rockdale Medical Center. Deputies met the child’s mother and father at the hospital before the baby was transported to Egleston children’s hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening injuries.

“It does appear to be completely accidental,” Camp said, but added the case is still under investigation.

Family of 4-year-old who shot himself stresses gun safety

NEW ORLEANS -- (12-7-15)  A New Orleans East family avoided a near tragedy Sunday, and now they're reminding gun owners about safety around children and teens.

"Keep those guns locked. That's what we need to do.  Lock 'em up," said the grandmother.

A doctor, along with that family, are reminding gun owners about the importance of locking guns away or using trigger locks. That's after a 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself through the neck Sunday with his grandparents' gun. They got it for protection from crime.

"When an accident happens, it is so devastating you know. I just thank God he's alright," said the child's grandmother.

She did not want to be identified, but said he is emotional yet thankful.

Sunday, her three grandsons were with her and their grandfather at their New Orleans East home. She stepped into the bathroom, connected to her bedroom, where the 4-year-old grandson was playing.

"Next thing I heard, it sounded like a firecracker to me. He was just crying, 'I want my mama.' My husband came took him in the bathroom and looked and that's when he saw the blood."

The child had opened the closed, unlocked night stand next to the bed. The bullet went through his neck. He went to UMC on Sunday and then to Children's Hospital on Monday.

His grandmother says nothing vital was hit.

"I talked to him and asked him if he was in any pain, you know, and he said, 'No, Granny.'"

LSUHSC child psychiatrist Dr. Kristopher Kaliebe says guns must always be locked up. Children have no idea what they do.

"4-year-olds, while they can produce language, they seem to, adults consistently overestimate how much they know and understand. Even teenagers, even more so because they're, because they think that they know more than they really know. They might be more dangerous," said Dr. Kaliebe.

"When the children are around you gotta lock 'em up. You can talk to 'em all day, but they gonna still be inquisitive, because they children," stressed the grandmother.

New Orleans police say no charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is ongoing.

The young boy's parents have been at his side at Children's Hospital all day. He is being discharged Monday.

Two Men Shot in Separate Deer Hunting Incidents

DES MOINES, Iowa — (12-7-15)  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says two deer hunters were injured in separate incidents Sunday.

The first happened just after 8:00 a.m. in Delaware County, on private land, about a mile northeast of Backbone State Park. Twenty-eight-year-old Travis Myers, of Dundee, was hunting with 10 other people when he was hit by a deer slug in the upper right shoulder. Officials say another member of the hunting party accidentally shot him.

Myers was taken to Manchester Regional Medical Center where he was expected to be treated for a flesh wound.

The second incident happened around 2:00 p.m. northeast of Winfield, in Henry County. Forty-seven-year-old Walter Freeman, of Winfield, was hit in the stomach by a deer slug. Officials believe another hunter in his party fired the shot. Freeman was transported by air ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals for surgery. His current condition is unknown.

DNR officials say it appears both incidents happened when a hunter was firing at a moving deer. They are stressing hunting safety and the importance of knowing where all members of your party are.

“Wait until you have a clear shot with a safe backstop before pulling the trigger.  Know where members of your hunting party are at, at all times,” said Megan Wisecup, the coordinator for hunter safety programs for the DNR.

Both shootings are being investigated by the DNR.

Girl, 14, accidentally shot by family friend at CG firing range

By KEVIN REAGAN, Staff Writer
CASA GRANDE --(11-30-15) A 14-year-old girl was accidentally shot by a family friend Saturday afternoon at Elzy Pearson Shooting Range on Isom Road, authorities said.
A 9mm handgun was accidentally discharged by Howard Reno, 50, while he was trying to holster the firearm. The bullet struck the teenage girl, who was seated about 20 feet away from Reno, in her front torso and exited through her back.
A Casa Grande Police Department park ranger responded first to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. to administer first aid.
The girl was reportedly alert and conscious when the Casa Grande Fire Department arrived on scene. She was later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital.
A family member of the girl reported on social media she is “doing fine” and that no drugs or alcohol were involved.
No charges have been filed against Reno, whose considered a friend of the girl’s family, and an incident report has been forwarded to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office for review.
The Elzy Pearson Shooting Range is overseen by the City of Casa Grande’s Community Services Department.
The department’s advisory board approved a set of rules in 2003 to improve the safety of the city-operated shooting range. The former Community Services Director said at the time no formal rules had been established before to regulate the facility.
One of the approved rules dictated that firearms must be kept unloaded until shooters are on the firing line. Another required that all shots must only be fired into backstops.
