Chief deputy coroner avoids serious injury in accidental shooting

Anderson, SC    (12-2-15) — Charlie Boseman, Anderson County's longtime chief deputy coroner, accidentally shot himself in the leg during a training drill Tuesday. He was not seriously injured.

Boseman's .40-caliber Glock pistol fired as he was holstering the weapon after completing a "live shooter" training scenario at the Anderson Police Department's shooting range.

Boseman said he believes that a drawstring on his jacket became entangled with the pistol's trigger, which caused the weapon to fire.

The bullet entered his right thigh and exited his right calf, Boseman said.

He was treated in the emergency room at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

Boseman was using crutches after leaving the emergency room. He said he expects to return to work in a few days.

Boseman was taking part in a twice yearly firearm-training drill with coroner Greg Shore and deputy coroners Don McCown and Josh Shore when the shooting accident happened.

Greg Shore said that Boseman will be required to complete a gun-safety course before he can carry a weapon while on duty.

Boseman said he usually keeps his pistol in his car when responding to calls. He said he wears the gun in a holster when investigating homicides.

Boseman, who has been the county's chief deputy coroner since 1995, was in good spirits Tuesday night. He joked that the coroner's office is only going to give him "one bullet at a time" in the future.

Toddler playing in parents’ bedroom shots himself with revolver

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — (12-1-15) Police said a toddler accidentally shot himself in the arm at his south Nashville home on Monday night.

WSMV reports the 3-year-old was by himself inside his parents’ bedroom on Whitsett Road when he reportedly got out a .32-caliber revolver from a bookshelf. The weapon was in a cloth holster.

His father and 12-year-old sister were preparing dinner in the kitchen while his three other siblings were watching TV in the family room at the time of the shooting. His mother was at work.

The toddler’s family members heard the gun go off and found him in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to his left upper arm, according to police.

The toddler is being treated at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

Police said no charges have been filed against the child’s parents.

The Metro Nashville Police Department’s Youth Services Division is leading the investigation.

Man dies after shooting himself at Randolph gun range

Randolph, N.J.  (12-1-15)  A man died Monday night after he shot himself in the chest at the RTSP Shooting Range in Randolph, one of the owners of the shooting range confirmed.

Rick Friedman, an owner of RTSP Shooting Range, told NJ Advance Media the man had practiced at the range a couple times before Monday night and there were no apparent signs he intended to shoot himself.

"Everybody followed protocol and proper procedures," he said of his staff, adding that personnel at the scene attempted to perform first aid on the man.

The Morris County Prosecutor's Office and the Randolph Police Department confirmed in a news release Tuesday afternoon a 28-year-old man fatally shot himself inside the gun range the previous day.

Randolph police were notified of the shooting at 4:59 p.m., and, despite rushing the man to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, authorities said.

Friedman and fellow range owner Brad Tremaroli said a policy barring first-time shooters at the range from shooting solo was put in place after a 21-year-old man fatally shot himself at the range in September. That policy, they said, wouldn't have stopped the man who shot himself Monday night since he had been to their range before.

After the September shooting, the staff, Tremaroli said, received training on potential indicators — including warning signs like edginess, disinterest in talking with range staff, disinterest with the type of weapon they're seeking to rent — prior to Monday night's shooting. However, the man who shot himself Monday didn't appear to set off any of those red flags, he said.

Tremaroli said he and the other owners planned to review and update their policies again in light of Monday night's shooting.

"This matter continues to be investigated, but is considered to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community," Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp and Randolph police Chief David Stokoe said in the news release. "No other persons were involved in this incident and no criminal charges are expected."

Knapp and Stokoe also said they wouldn't release the man's identity.

The matter was investigated by the Randolph Township Police Department, the Major Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, the Morris County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Section and the Morris County Medical Examiner's Office.
