DPS investigating accidental shooting at Valley gun show

PHOENIX - (12-6-15)  An accidental shooting happened at a gun show here in the valley Saturday morning. The shooting left one man injured and many others asking how this could happen.

Officials say the victim was shot once, resulting in a non-life threatening injury, and is expected to be okay. But the big question tonight is how this could happen considering the gun show has strict "no loaded gun rules" on show grounds?

Just after 11:00 am, officers responded to an accidental shooting at the crossroads of the West Gun Show, according to officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, after a customer purchased an antique handgun.

That’s when the unexpected happened…

"As he was inspecting it, the gun discharged and struck his friend who was standing next to him, in the upper left torso," said Capt. Damon Cecil with DPS.

The gun show, which has extremely clear rules about no loaded firearms or loaded magazines on the premises, hasn't had a problem like this for the 40 years it's been around, so the question remains…how did this happen?

"We have detectives that are working, discussing what happened with other law enforcement, with the victim, with the subject that was handling the firearm at the time, so once we complete the investigation hopefully we will have that information vetted out," said Cecil.

Even though this was considered an accident, it still gives gun-control-enthusiasts ammo to say, fewer guns, fewer accidents, but officers say if you do exercise your right to bear arms, just make sure you take all precautions.

"Always treat a firearm as if it's loaded, never point it at something that you do not want to kill or destroy, and keep your finger off the trigger," Cecil recommends.

We're told this could have an impact on how this gun show is handled in the future.

Family: 17-year-old shot to death by a friend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — (12-6-15)  A 17-year-old Jacksonville teenager lost his life in a shooting at a home on the west side Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Malik Lavaniel Warthen III was in his room with friends when one of them grabbed a gun, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said that Warthen died from a gunshot wound to the head.

"He was outgoing. He was a loving person," said Sky Hall, Warthen's aunt. "He didn't deserve this."

Near noon, officers were called out to a home on the 9300 block of Maidstone Mill Drive after hearing someone was shot.

Police said they found the victim there with a gunshot wound. First responders transported him to a hospital where he later died, police said.

According to JSO the home belongs to Warthen's aunt.

"There was a mix of a group of people in their late teens," Sgt Robert John with JSO said.

All of the teens inside the home were questioned. JSO has yet to make an arrest. Nor are investigators releasing information about the shooter.

Jade Atwater, The victim's cousin, lives at the home where the shooting happened. She was not there at the time but says the family knows the shooter, who's also a teenager.

"He used to always be at the house. They use to stay the night, play games, throw parties together, so I don't know how this even happened," Atwater said.

Neighbor Charmin Alston was at her home, a few doors down, when she says the victim's mother ran into her arms.

"I consoled her, and held her, and hugged her as hard as I could and just told her I was so sorry," Alston recalled.

Alston said the teens all live in or near the usually quiet community. She said she often saw the victim and the suspected shooter playing outside together.

However, no one was sure where the gun came from.

Alston said she believed the shooting was an accident.

Authorities have charged 17-year-old Michael Cecil Saddler with manslaughter and evidence tampering.

The gun was found at a nearby house's backyard.

Boy, 3, accidentally shoots 15-year-old brother in foot

San Francisco, (12-6-15)   A three-year-old boy has accidentally shot and wounded his older brother in California, the latest gun incident in the state that witnessed the death of 14 persons last week in the worst mass shooting in the US since 2012.

The 15-year-old was shot in the foot by his younger sibling last night, Joe Silva with the Stockton Police Department said.

Silva said the police are investigating the incident.

The injuries are not life threatening, the police said, and the teen has been transported to the hospital.

It is unclear where exactly the shooting happened, as police learned about the incident when the teen showed up at emergency unit just after 8 pm, sacramento.cbslocal.com reported.

Apparently, the children were playing hide and seek and went into the closet of the master bedroom and found the gun.

Investigators believe the 3-year-old grabbed the gun and accidentally shot the 15-year-old, the report said.

The police say the gun belongs to the step-dad. The children’s parents are cooperating with the investigation, the report said.

The incident comes days after a radicalised couple—Tashfeen Mailk and Syed Rizwan Farook shot dead 14 people and injured 21 others in San Bernardino in California.

While Farook was a US citizen of Pakistani-origin, Tashfeen was a Pakistani national. Both were later killed by the police in an exchange of fire on Wednesday.

The San Bernardino incident is the deadliest mass shooting in the US since 26 people were killed at a school in Newton, Connecticut in 2012. — PTI

The 17-year-old boy who fired the shot is in police custody, charged with second degree murder.

“He’s a good kid,” said Rios, of the shooter. “He used to come over here a lot with my son.”

As Englewood police actively investigate the shooting, they haven’t released details including where the teens got the handgun.
