By KEVIN REAGAN, Staff Writer
CASA GRANDE -- (11-30-15)  A 14-year-old girl was accidentally shot by a family friend Saturday afternoon at Elzy Pearson Shooting Range on Isom Road, authorities said.
A 9mm handgun was accidentally discharged by Howard Reno, 50, while he was trying to holster the firearm. The bullet struck the teenage girl, who was seated about 20 feet away from Reno, in her front torso and exited through her back.
A Casa Grande Police Department park ranger responded first to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. to administer first aid.
The girl was reportedly alert and conscious when the Casa Grande Fire Department arrived on scene. She was later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital.
A family member of the girl reported on social media she is “doing fine” and that no drugs or alcohol were involved.
No charges have been filed against Reno, whose considered a friend of the girl’s family, and an incident report has been forwarded to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office for review.
The Elzy Pearson Shooting Range is overseen by the City of Casa Grande’s Community Services Department.
The department’s advisory board approved a set of rules in 2003 to improve the safety of the city-operated shooting range. The former Community Services Director said at the time no formal rules had been established before to regulate the facility.

One of the approved rules dictated that firearms must be kept unloaded until shooters are on the firing line. Another required that all shots must only be fired into backstops.

Hunters Urged to Play it Safe in Chautauqua County Woods After 2nd Accidental Shooting

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. -- (11-30-15)  Police in the town of Ellicott said a young boy was on Friday accidentally shot in the shoulder by his brother while hunting in the woods behind a mobile home park in Falconer. It's the second hunting-related accidental shooting in Chautauqua County since the Nov. 21 start of shotgun and rifle season.

"Always concerned about that. We're concerned that people who make judgment mistakes are going to hurt or kill somebody," said Sheriff Joe Gerace, D-Chautauqua County.

According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, the number of hunting-related shootings has gone down, with only 22 across the state last year.

Gerace says hunters need to follow basic safety guidelines like don't drink and hunt, know the area and wear bright orange instead of camouflage.

"People sometime shoot at the noises and that crackling brush could be a human being, and people get excited, and they see an animal, and suddenly they get tunnel vision and they forget about their surroundings," said Gerace.

"We don't want anybody to get hurt and obviously we don't anybody to get killed," said Bruce Piatz, M&M Sports Den owner.

Piatz, the longtime owner of M&M Sports Den in Jamestown, says all hunters are required to take the DEC's education course before he can issue them a license. He also urges hunters to use the firearm's safety lock and obey conservation laws.

"In terms of loading and unloading your firearm and shooting at the proper targets, it's going to be a safe sport," said Piatz.

Gerace says he hopes hunters get through the rest of season without incident.

"The ones we don't hear about are doing the things right, they're being safe, they're really good at what they do," said Gerace.

Rifle and shotgun season ends Dec. 13.
