Deputy’s 3-year-old son dies in accidental shooting


SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. – (12-11-15)  A child of a law enforcement officer in Hutchinson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday.

South Hutchinson Police officers and deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of E. Avenue B in South Hutchinson about 8:15 a.m. after a report of a shooting.

Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said in an email the first officers on the scene they discovered the 3-year-old son of Reno County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nagel had found a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun in the apartment his father shares with another individual.  Henderson said the deputy was in another room when he heard a gunshot and ran to find his son had been wounded.

Henderson said Deputy Nagel and South Hutchinson firefighters administered first aid to the child before EMS arrived.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stephen Schlif is in the apartment complex every day caring for one of the residents. He got a phone call Friday he’ll never forget.

“It sends chills through your spine when you hear about it because even though it’s not your child you,
you still feel bad,” said Schlif.

South Hutchinson Police are being aided in the investigation of the incident by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Police say the investigation continues, and that no charges have been filed at this time.

Morgan City man dies after shooting in Terrebonne Parish


Morgan City  (12-11-15)  A Morgan City man died in Terrebonne Parish Thursday night after a reported accidental shooting on Jennings Lane.

According to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office, 23-year-old Joshua Naverro was pronounced dead at a hospital in Terrebonne Parish. He died from a gunshot wound.

Calvis Hollis, the man arrested in connection with Naverro's death, told investigators that he accidentally shot Naverro in the head after a gun he was playing with malfunctioned.

Hollis, 26, of Thibodaux, was arrested Thursday night and booked with one count of manslaughter.

Hollis will also be booked with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has a previous conviction for drug offenses

Man Dies Accidentally at Shooting Range


Casper, Wy  (12-11-15) A Natrona County man died at a shooting range west of Casper on Thursday, according to a news release from the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the recreational shooting area on Coal Mountain Road at 12:51 p.m. Thursday.
They found a male, later identified as 46-year-old James Wright, who was declared deceased at the scene.
Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office investigators determined from evidence at the scene and subsequent interviews that Wright died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No foul play is suspected.
The Sheriff’s Office has notified Wright’s family. No autopsy is scheduled.

Houston Police: 16-year-old shot while playing with guns


HOUSTON, TEX  (12-11-15)   – A family is at the hospital pulling for a 16-year-old boy’s recovery Friday morning.

Police say some poor choices he and some friends made inside in an upstairs apartment could lead to lifelong consequences.

According to the Houston Police Department, the group of teenagers were playing with guns at the Villa Nueva Apartments in the 5300 block of West Gulf Bank near West Montgomery Road.

Police say at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday one of the friends accidentally fired off a shot. The bullet piercing the 16-year-old in the chest.

Detectives say initial reports from the hospital indicate that teen could be paralyzed as a result of that gunshot wound.

The teen accused of unleashing the bullet was held in the back of an HPD squad for hours and taken away from the scene.

Police say it will be up to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if he will face charges.

Investigators were scene removing several firearms from the apartment where this happened, including what looked like a semi-automatic rifle.
