Cops: Mom shot, killed daughter mistaken for intruder
St. Cloud, Fla. (12-30-15) St. Cloud Police Cpl. Claude Campbell, Jr. placed a breathless 911 call late Tuesday evening as his step-daughter lay unconscious in his 10th Street home.
He tells the dispatcher that 27-year-old Ashley Doby has "passed out. She has a pacemaker. She has a heart problem," in a recording released by police.
But not once during the five-minute 911 call does Campbell, a veteran member of the St. Cloud Police Department, mention why Doby was struggling to breathe: a gunshot wound to the chest.
Campbell omitted that fact because he was asleep when his wife shot Doby, mistaking her for an intruder, police said on Wednesday. He didn't realize what happened until his wife — a 911 dispatcher with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office – explained it to him, according to authorities.
It was too late. Doby was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. Her death is being characterized by St. Cloud Police as an "accidental shooting," according to Sgt. Denise Roberts. Sherry Campbell, 45, fired one fatal shot. She has not been arrested on any criminal charges.
"The homeowner's story is consistent with the physical evidence and the witness' statement," Roberts said in a news release. "At this time, the incident appears to be an accidental shooting; however, the investigation is ongoing…"
Once the investigation is complete, detectives will forward the case to the Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office, which decides whether to file criminal charges.
Claude Campbell would not comment when he was reached on his cell phone.
In the 911 call, his wife Sherry is heard in the background apologizing to her daughter.
"Baby, I love you so much, please!" she sobs. "Please…Oh my god …"
'Very quiet' neighborhood
Events at the Campbells' 10th street home unfolded on Tuesday just before midnight, police said.
Sherry Campbell was sleeping in her bed and awoke after she thought an intruder had entered the home and was approaching her, Roberts said in a news release.
Police have released few other details about the case of mistaken identity.
Neighbors on Wednesday afternoon said they were surprised to learn of the shooting because they didn't hear a large police presence the night before — even though some were still awake.
The area, located just east of the city's cobblestoned downtown, is safe enough that resident Harry Morris often leaves his garage door rolled up.
So the 80-year-old retiree said he couldn't understand how someone would become so frightened here that she would reach for a gun, thinking someone was breaking in.
"That's really shocking, actually," Morris said on Wednesday while standing on his lawn, two houses down from where the shooting happened. "I've been here for 14 years, and nothing like this has ever happened. It's usually very quiet."
Morris said Claude Campbell has lived at the modest, ranch-style home for longer than he has been in the neighborhood, and the law-enforcement officer has responded to his home a couple of times.
"I know him because he's a detective," Morris said. "He's a friendly guy."
Campbell, 45, has been employed with the St. Cloud Police Department since 1998, Roberts said. In that time, he has served as an undercover officer for various narcotic units. He is currently taking administrative leave from the department for family medical purposes, Roberts said.
"The incident ... involved the mother and daughter and did not involve a SCPD Officer," Roberts said in a release. "This is not an officer involved shooting and therefore, it will not be investigated by FDLE."
Accidental shootings
This is not the first time in Central Florida where a relative has been mistaken as an intruder in a fatal shooting.
In June, a 16-year-old Ocoee High School student was fatally shot by his brother in their Pine Hills home, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
The 32-year-old brother was asleep with his wife at home about 11:30 p.m. when he thought he heard an intruder and fired his semiautomatic handgun, deputies said.
The person turned out to be Leonard "Leo" Stay, who was badly wounded and later died at a local hospital.
In a non-deadly accidental shooting, a Mount Dora man shot his ex-girlfriend when she came back to a residence to gather her things.
Anthony "T.J." Schaus told Lake County Sheriff's Office deputies he thought a woman who had walked into his closet was a burglar. He was sleeping when she entered, he said.
The woman, Felicia Hoffman, suffered stomach and back injuries.
Criminal charges were not filed in either of those cases, court records show.

Rock Hill woman charged with domestic violence after Christmas Day shooting
Rock Hil, NC (12-29-15) A Rock Hill woman shot her boyfriend during a disagreement between the two of them about going to her mother’s home for Christmas, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report released Monday.
Deputies on Christmas Day responded to a 911 hangup on the 2200 block of Porter Road, according to the report. Neighbors told deputies there was an “accidental shooting and the bullet ricocheted off the toilet and hit someone in the shoulder.”
The 51-year-old victim didn’t appear to have any injuries when he answered the door and told deputies no one in the home called 911.
The victim allowed officers to search the home, and they found drops of blood on the rug in a bathroom and a shell casing near the bathroom door, deputies said. He first said he fell, and then when a deputy picked up the bullet and told him they had a 911 recording from the home, the victim said his girlfriend of 20 years, Krystal Kuntz, shot him.
The victim lifted his shirt and showed deputies a wound to his back that appeared as though someone tried to bandage it, the report states.
Kuntz, 37, became upset while she and the victim were having a disagreement about going to her mother’s home for Christmas, deputies say. She went to the master bedroom, got a 9 mm gun and started waving it around in the bathroom where he was.
The victim said he didn’t believe Kuntz knew how to take the safety off, and that the shooting was an accident, the report states. He added that they weren’t fighting or arguing and he didn’t want her to get in trouble.
EMS transported the man to a Charlotte hospital. Deputies say Kuntz had already fled when they arrived.
Kuntz was later arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, according to law enforcement records. She was placed in the York County Detention Center and released Sunday on $10,000 bond.

Sheriff Expects Felony for Portage Woman Who Shot Herself and Lied about ‘Masked Man’
Portage, NY. – (12-29-15) The Portage woman who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly lying to police about an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound is expected to be charged with more crimes, including a felony, for tampering with evidence at her home.
According to a press release from Sheriff Thomas Dougherty, Brittney Ellis, 26, has already been arrested for Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Third Degree, Making a Punishable False Written Statement, and Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, which are all misdemeanors.
“I commend the members teamwork to dig through the evidence and get to the truth on this case,” stated Sheriff Dougherty. “This woman wasted a lot of time and resources with a fabricated story that sent fear through a small community. My personal opinion is this wasn’t an accident at all and this case is far from over. I fully expect a more serious charge in the form of a felony for her tampering with evidence on scene.”
Ellis contacted the Livingston County Emergency Communications Center at about 3:47 a.m. on Dec. 28, and told the Sheriff’s Office Dispatcher that she had been shot in the leg by an unknown masked man at her front door. Sheriff’s Deputies did respond to the scene and secured the scene so that Nunda Ambulance and Livingston County EMS could care for Ellis, who had a bullet entry and exit wound to her upper left leg. Ellis was transported to Strong Hospital.
Sheriff’s Office members from the Forensic Identification Unit (FIU), Road Patrol Division, and the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) did comb the scene and gathered evidence into the late morning hours.
Road Patrol Services Chief Deputy Matthew Burgess and Investigator Daniel Rittenhouse of the Criminal Investigation Division did respond to Strong Hospital to speak with Ellis. Members on scene updated the Chief Deputy and Investigator of inaccuracies in Ellis’s story based on the evidence on scene. Ellis was interviewed extensively and allegedly said that she made the whole story up and that she had accidentally shot herself in her leg after going outside with a loaded gun to check on the reason why her dogs were barking.
Ellis was arrested by Investigator Rittenhouse and arraigned in West Sparta Town Court before Judge Moffat. Ellis will be back in Portage Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
Investigating at the scene was Road Patrol Captain Norm Zeh, CID Captain Brian Applin, CID Investigator Gene Chichester, FIU Sergeant Chad VanAuken, Deputy Tim Sweeting, and FIU Deputy Caleb Cutting.

Hunter shot in stomach after being mistaken for deer in Lapeer County
OREGON TOWNSHIP, MI — (12-28-15) A 47-year-old Davison man is in stable condition after he was mistakenly shot Saturday, Dec. 26, while hunting on state game land in Lapeer County.
Lt. Dave Kaiser, of the Michigan State Police, said the man was in a wooded area in the 3000 block of Norway Lake Road, between Flint River and Skelton roads, in Oregon Township when the shooting took place.
A 39-year-old Flint man was hunting with his 25-year-old nephew from Burton, and the pair were headed out of the woods about 5:40 p.m., Kaiser said.
"Those two are walking out of the woods at night. They hear a noise. They see a glimmer of light and believe it to be the eyes of a deer," he said of the incident police have labeled an accidental shooting. "The nephew points his gun in that direction and fires."
The Davison man, who was archery hunting, was struck once in the abdomen with buckshot fired from a 12-gauge shotgun, Kaiser said. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition.
Hunting season is still underway for antlerless deer and some varieties of small game.
Sgt. Jason Smith, of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' law enforcement division, said late antlerless deer firearm season runs through Jan. 1, 2016, on private land, while hunters still may take deer on public land with a bow and arrow.
Smith said it appears the firearm deer hunters were dressed in hunter orange, while the victim was not wearing the color. Smith noted archery hunters are not required to wear the bright-colored clothing.
The state DNR is investigating what time the shot was fired, as hunting can take place only up to 30 minutes after sunset. Smith pointed out there were some cellphone reception issues in the area, possibly delaying the call for help.
Police received a 911 call at 5:42 p.m. Saturday, a few minutes after the hunting period officially ended for the day at 5:36 p.m.
"It's unfortunate," Smith said of the shooting incident. "If they are going to use firearms, we encourage people to safely identify their targets and what's behind them. That helps to avoid accidents like this one."

UPDATED 18-year-old man facing 'multiple charges' in city's 46th shooting of the year
Police say the shooting appears to be accidental.
Ottawa, ON. (12-29-15) The Ottawa Police Guns and Gangs Unit says an 18-year-old man is facing "multiple charges" as police continue to investigate the city's 46th shooting of 2015.
A news release issued late Monday said an 18-year-old man is in custody and he's facing "multiple charges", but a Guns and Gangs Unit spokesperson could not elaborate on what those charges might be.
Police were called an apartment building on Lees Avenue around 2:20 a.m. Monday, where officers discovered evidence of a gun shot being fired. One man was taken into custody without incident at the scene.
Sgt. Mike Saunders with the Guns and Gangs Unit said, in the early stages of their investigation, it appears the shooting was accidental.
"We don't have any evidence that would support the idea of a criminal shooting," said Saunders. "It appears it's more of a person with a firearm and accidentally discharged in the apartment building, but then again that's obviously a concern to us as well, due to people's safety in adjoining units."
Saunders said the man arrested at the scene was not known to police and was cooperating with the investigation.
The Monday night news release said "there is no evidence of gang activity and the investigation continues into the matter."
While full details on the charges the 18-year-old in custody faces could not be provided, Saunders said he could be facing a charge of careless handling of a firearm.

2 fatally shot, 1 accidentally, by Chicago police on West Side; families demand answers
Megan Crepeau, Jeremy Gorner
Chicago (12-27-15) Police responding to a call about a domestic disturbance shot and killed a 19-year-old engineering student and a 55-year-old mother of five, and authorities acknowledged late Saturday that the woman had been shot by accident.
The families of both victims demanded answers after the deaths, which were the first fatal shootings by Chicago police officers since last month's release of a 2014 video of Laquan McDonald's death put a national spotlight on the city.
The Police Department said its officers responded to a home in West Garfield Park around 4:30 a.m. and were “confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer's weapon, fatally wounding two individuals.”
The 19-year-old, Quintonio LeGrier, was carrying a baseball bat and threatening his father when police were called, according to police dispatch radio traffic. No gun was recovered at the scene, a police source said.
The woman who was killed, Bettie Jones, was a downstairs neighbor who had been asked by LeGrier's father to keep an eye out for the arrival of the police, according to both families.
In a statement, the police said: “The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed. The department extends its deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends.”
The West Side tragedy was the first of two police shootings Saturday. In the second, on the Far South Side, officers said they responded to an “assault in progress” call in the 1000 block of West 103rd Place. Police said they encountered an armed man and shot him. The suspect was taken in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, officials said.
At the same time the police confirmed that the West Side woman was killed by accident, they also announced a major policy shift: All officers involved in shootings will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
The new policy is a dramatic change from the current requirement that officers have to come off active duty for three days.
Even while acknowledging the woman's accidental shooting, police offered a scant narrative of what occurred at the two-flat in the 4700 block of West Erie Street. They did not say why the officer fired his weapon, whether the “combative subject” was armed at the time or whether the officers had a Taser.
Questions were referred to the Independent Police Review Authority, which confirmed only that the shooting had occurred.
IPRA head Sharon Fairley responded to both of Saturday's shootings, visiting a police detective area and the Far South Side scene. Fairley took over this month after the resignation of previous IPRA chief Scott Ando. Other fallout from the McDonald video has included charges against Officer Jason Van Dyke, the firing of police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and the launching of a federal civil rights investigation, which Mayor Rahm Emanuel first opposed but later welcomed.
The Fraternal Order of Police did not comment on Saturday's shootings, a departure from years of on-the-scene statements from organization spokesman Pat Camden. The practice, quietly ended a few months ago, has come under intense scrutiny since the McDonald video release. After that shooting, Camden told the media that the teen had lunged at police. The video contradicted that report.
An Emanuel spokesman said the mayor was in Cuba on a family vacation but was in touch with aides in Chicago. Emanuel issued a statement Saturday night saying, “Anytime an officer uses force the public deserves answers, and regardless of the circumstances we all grieve anytime there is a loss of life in our city.”
A prayer vigil is planned Sunday afternoon at the scene of the West Side shooting, which left relatives outraged.
“I want this investigation to be thorough. I want answers,” said Bettie Jones' cousin Evelyn Glover Jennings. “Her blood is crying out from the grave saying, ‘Evelyn, avenge me.'”
While police said little about the shooting, relatives of the victims had plenty to say.
LeGrier had struggled with mental health issues in recent months, had become agitated and was carrying a metal bat in his father's upstairs apartment, relatives said.
“His father was scared because that's not his character,” said LeGrier's mother, Janet Cooksey, 49, who was not present at the time of the shooting.
LeGrier's father told his neighbor Jones downstairs not to approach his son while watching for police, family members said.
Responding officers were told by a dispatcher that a “male caller said someone is threatening his life. It's also coming in as a domestic. The 19-year-old son is banging on his bedroom door with a baseball bat.”
A relative of the teen said it appears LeGrier came to the front door as officers from the Harrison District pulled up. Jones' relatives believe she was behind LeGrier, near the entrance to her apartment.
Latisha Jones, 19, said she woke to gunfire and found her mother on the floor of her apartment with a gunshot wound to the neck. “She wasn't saying anything,” the daughter said. “I had to keep checking for a pulse.”
The Police Department did not say where the victims were standing when they were shot, but blood could be seen in the small vestibule and just inside Jones' apartment. At least one bullet appeared to have traveled through Jones' apartment, hitting at least two walls.
LeGrier's mother said the family was told her son was shot seven times.
“Seven times he was shot,” Cooksey said. “He didn't have a gun. He had a bat. One or two times would have brought him down.
“You call the police, you try to get help and you lose a loved one,” she said. “What are they trained for? Just to kill? I thought that we were supposed to get service and protection. I mean, my son was an honor student. He's here for Christmas break, and now I've lost him.”
She directed her anger at the mayor. “Emanuel, I want a personal apology for my son's life,” Cooksey said. “I don't want you to get on the news and say you're so … I want a personal apology.”
The NIU website shows LeGrier enrolled as a freshman in fall 2014 with an electrical engineering major. He graduated from Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep high school on the Far South Side.
“My son was going somewhere,” his mother said. “He wasn't just a thug on the street.”
Antonio LeGrier, the student's father, said his son had “emotional issues.” He believes the officer “messed up” and shot recklessly. “I don't feel that his life was worth losing because he got upset,” the father said.
A police source said investigators were waiting for the autopsy to determine how many times LeGrier was shot. The source also said investigators were looking into whether responding officers knew they were dealing with someone with mental health issues and whether anyone on the scene was equipped with a Taser.
Relatives of Bettie Jones said they, too, had questions.
“Right now there's a whole lot of anger, a whole lot of tears,” said her brother Melvin Jones.
Jones lived in the first-floor apartment with her boyfriend, he said. She was the mother of four daughters and a son, her brother said.
Melvin Jones said he and about 15 other relatives were at the apartment Friday to celebrate Christmas with food and card games. “She had an excellent Christmas. Family was over,” Melvin Jones said. “And then to wake up to this.”
Robin Andrews, Bettie Jones' youngest brother, said Jones had been battling ovarian cancer for several years and had recently taken time off from her job at a bakery to recuperate.
“She was already sick,” he said through tears. “She was already fighting for her life.”
Chicago Tribune reporters Deanese Williams-Harris, Genevieve Bookwalter, Annie Sweeney and Bill Ruthhart contributed.

Cops: Man killed home intruder but also brother, housemate
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ (12-24-15) A former juvenile delinquent fatally shot an armed robber who broke into his apartment through a bathroom window and accidentally shot and killed his visiting teenage brother and his housemate while exchanging shots with the intruder, a district attorney said Wednesday.
Meiko Devaughn has been charged with illegally possessing a firearm, drug possession and receiving stolen property.
Devaughn, who police said was in the “drug business,” shot at 25-year-old Kadeem Williams after Williams climbed into the apartment Devaughn shared with Akeilah Solomon at about 3:20 a.m. Monday, said Stephen Zappala Jr., the Allegheny County district attorney.
As the two fired shots at each other, Devaughn, 22, also struck the 20-year-old Solomon and his 16-year-old brother, Jaimill Kenney, with bullets, killing them. Williams was mortally wounded in the exchange but managed to run outside before dying, Zappala said.
It’s not clear whether Devaughn will face charges for the shootings, Zappala said, because the investigation is continuing.
“We have to know all the evidence first,” the prosecutor said at the scene Tuesday. “You’re entitled to protect yourself.”
The county medical examiner determined Solomon was shot once in the head, while Kenney and Williams were shot once each in the chest. Kenney was visiting his brother.
Devaughn was adjudicated delinquent, the juvenile court equivalent of a conviction, in 2009 on charges including robbery and aggravated assault. That’s why it was illegal for Devaughn to possess the .40-caliber Glock pistol he used, according to a criminal complaint. The gun had been stolen from neighboring Butler County.
Police believe Williams was trying to rob Devaughn because $1,000 worth of marijuana and $14,000 cash were found in the apartment, police said.
Zappala said investigators believe at least one other intruder may have been involved. They didn’t find a gun near Williams’ body outside the apartment complex but did find shells from a different caliber weapon at the scene, he said.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for Devaughn, who was in custody awaiting arraignment Wednesday.

Beloit teen charged in apparently accidental shooting death of best friend
Beloit, Wi. (12-24-15) A 17-year-old Beloit boy who reportedly accidentally shot and killed his best friend Tuesday morning was charged Wednesday with homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon.
Nikolai Wasilewski was released on a $10,000 signature bond.
Marcus James Seichter, 17, also of Beloit, died at Beloit Memorial Hospital.
Police responded at 8:39 a.m. Tuesday to a home at 212 Eighth St. and found Wasilewski standing outside a basement bedroom, covered in blood, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Rock County Circuit Court. Wasilewski’s mother, Nancy Buchs, who had called police, was trying to help Seichter, who had been shot in the head.
A handgun, a .357 revolver containing one spent cartridge and two live rounds, was found on the bed, according to the complaint.
“He was just standing there, I was playing with the gun and it went off,” Wasilewski told police at the scene, according to the complaint. He said the gun belonged to Seichter.
Buchs told police the two teenagers had been best friends since they were 4 years old.
“They were like brothers,” she told police.
She said she was watching television at 8:30 a.m. when she heard a loud bang, followed by Wasilewski yelling at her to call 911 because “Marcus had been shot.”
She followed a dispatcher’s directions to perform CPR on the victim, but when police took over there was no pulse, according to the complaint.
Wasilewski was ordered to have no contact with Seichter’s family. An initial appearance was set for Jan. 6.

Minnesota man charged after carrying pistol in pants, accidentally shooting it in Target
FRIDLEY, Minn. – (12-23-15) A Mora, Minn., man is charged with illegal possession of a firearm after being identified as the person who lost control of the pistol in his pants Dec. 13 in a Fridley Target store.
A woman told police she recognized Seth Allan Millner, 28, in media reports on an accidental gunshot at Target, according to the criminal complaint. She said she knew him to be a felon recently released from jail and he called her after the Target incident and told her not to call police.
The woman called police and not only told them Millner’s name, but also the phone number he called from and the license plate of his Chrysler Sebring, according to the complaint.
Police in Inver Grove Heights found the severely damaged Sebring abandoned in a wooded area the day after the Target incident.
Three days after that, St. Paul police picked Millner up for driving a stolen vehicle. He also had illegal drugs and a stolen 9mm handgun, according to the complaint.
Fridley police spoke to Millner in the Ramsey County Jail and he admitted that he was the one responsible for the gunshot at Target.
“All right, it was me, it was me in the (expletive) Target,” he told an investigator, according to the complaint. “I was just walking with it, the stupid (expletive) went off, I didn’t fidget with it, it just went off.”
Surveillance video showed the gun tucked into the waistband of Millner’s pants, according to police. The gun then slipped down into his pants leg and, as he attempted to grab it, the gun went off.
No one was injured. Surveillance video showed Millner and a woman running away. Images taken from that video were shown by local media and led to the tip identifying Millner, according to Fridley police.
Millner has a November 2014 conviction in Chisago County for possession of a “machine gun or short-barreled shotgun” and is ineligible to possess a firearm.
He remains in custody in Ramsey County pending felony charges and will be transferred to Anoka County to face the firearms charge there.

Neighbors react to the accidental shooting of 12-year-old by brother
AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) (12-23-15) A 13-year-old has been accused of accidentally shooting his sister in the stomach, just days before Christmas.
Juvenile complaints have been completed for the 13-year-old for reckless conduct and possession of gun by a person under 18 years old.
Neighbors told Fox 54 that nothing was out of the ordinary between the brother and sister, and they feel horrible that something so tragic happened so close.
"I was shocked. I mean these are children, and lives," said neighbor Jamesha Quiller.
Those lives will forever be changed after a tragic mistake on the 700 block of East Chapman Street.
Officials say a 12-year-old girl was shot in the stomach by her older brother. He was playing with a loaded gun.
Andre Avery lives on the same street as the children. He said, "Kids playing with guns isn't cool. They don't understand how a gun works."
Avery said it never gets easier to hear news like this.
"I knew something wasn't right when I saw police cars. I'm sorry for the family," said Avery.
Researchers with the Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection and Critical Care said it isn't clear exactly how many kids are accidentally shot each year. But, 87% of children 14 and younger that are killed by guns in 23 of the world's wealthiest countries were Americans.
Quiller has a son who plays on East Chapman street and said it's crucial that children are taught to separate fiction from reality so that they understand a bullet can't be taken back once the trigger is pulled.
"Parents should definitely talk to their children about the safety of a fake gun and a real gun. They should know exactly what a real gun can do to someone," said Quiller.
The 12-year-old is being treated at GRU and is listed in stable condition. Doctors will keep her overnight for observation.

Teen critically wounded by accident with muzzleloaded gun
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. --(12-23-15) A Poplar Bluff teen is in critical condition after her father accidentally shot her with a black-powder gun Monday morning inside their home.
Kaitlyn Elise Pullam, 17, was in critical but stable condition in the intensive-care unit Monday night at St. Louis Children's Hospital, said Butler County sheriff's investigator Randle Huddleston.
Butler County deputies learned Pullam had been shot about 11:25 a.m. Monday.
When Butler County Sheriff's Sgt. Brandon Lowe arrived at the Pullam home in the 500 block of County Road 4222, he said he found the teen lying on her bedroom floor and her father, Joe Denton Pullam, performing CPR.
Lowe said the girl was covered in blood, and she had what he described as a severe wound on the right side of her face.
Lowe said Kaitlyn Pullam was taken to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where she was stabilized before being flown to St. Louis.
Authorities said they believe the girl was standing by the head board of her bed when the bullet came through her bedroom wall. The bullet "actually went in through her right shoulder, then blew up, and shrapnel hit her in the face and chest and then hit the other wall," Lowe said.
The bullet fragmented and went into her lungs, Huddleston said.
As the girl was being seen to by emergency-services personnel, deputies began investigating the scene and talking with family members.
Barbara Pullam, the girl's mother, told officers she had brought home two .50-caliber muzzleloaded guns to her son from a cabin where they had been stored.
"(Joe Pullam) said they had been in a cabin for three years," Huddleston said. "He thought they were unloaded. He picked one of them up, and while handling the firearm, he inadvertently squeezed the trigger, and it went off."
Joe Pullam reported when the gun went off, he "initially thought it was a powder charge, and he said: 'Thank you, it wasn't loaded.' Then, he looked around the living room and saw the hole in the wall," Huddleston said.
Knowing the wall adjoined his daughter's bedroom, Pullam ran in to check on her and immediately began CPR.
When investigator Kelly Thompson said in his report he found what he described as "large" holes in the living room wall, bedroom wall and Kaitlyn Pullam's head board.

Game warden: Man shoots foot during illegal hunt near Denver City
DENVER CITY, TEXAS — (12-22-15) A man shot himself in the foot and was later arrested along with a friend after officials say they were hunting without permission on private property.
James Oboyle, 32, and Raul Cervantes, 45, went to private land Friday in Yoakum County to hunt rabbits, according to a statement from the Texas Game Warden’s Office.
During the hunt, one of them accidentally shot himself in the foot. When they attempted to leave, their vehicle became stuck in mud on the property. They contacted an acquaintance for help to pull out the vehicle.
The Yoakum County Sheriff’s Office was notified about the incident and received a statement from the Lovington, New Mexico, Police Department about its contact with one of the men as he was seeking treatment at the Lovington hospital for his gunshot wound.
After Yoakum County authorities learned the incident might have involved illegal hunting, they asked that the local game warden help with their investigation. The game warden and a Yoakum County deputy collected additional evidence and issued three arrest warrants. The hunters were located and taken into custody Monday afternoon.
Both men are being charged with hunting without landowner consent, a Class A misdemeanor, and one of them, who is a convicted felon, is being charged with illegal possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony.
“I am proud of the strong working relationship between Texas game wardens and the Yoakum County Sheriff’s Office,” said Aaron Sims, Lubbock district public information officer for the game warden’s office. “As with game wardens across the state, the partnerships between sheriffs as well as private landowners are key to protecting the wildlife and natural resources.”
Sims also reminds potential hunters to obtain permission before entering private property.
“This case should serve as a reminder to all. No matter the animal or the means and methods, hunters need to be aware of who owns the land, and get permission prior to entering the property.”

(12-21-15) An Indian Land man is accused of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he accidentally shot his girlfriend while their 9-month-old son was sleeping in the next room.
Russell Osborne, 35, of 512 Silver Run Road was arrested Sunday and charged with use of firearm while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities told ABC57 that about 10 teenagers ranging from ages 13 to 19 were in the hotel room when a handgun was apparently accidentally discharged. The victim was in stable condition after suffering superficial injuries to the face.
St. Joseph County Police are trying to determine who rented the room to the teens and what they were doing in the hotel. The biggest hurdle in the investigation, ABC57 said, is that because the witnesses are underage, police first had to get permission from their parents before speaking with them.

South Fulton teen accidentally shoots mother in neck
FULTON COUNTY, GA. -- (12-20-15) Police said a mother is in stable condition after being shot in the neck by her son.

"He helped this community. He was part of this community. The people who did this, unacceptable," Syrett Lue said.
"Apathy is the worst crime in our community. We have to change that in our community," said Mason White, an activists who runs the organization Nosey Neighbors Clique.

Man shot by Paradise police officer dies
CHICO, Calif. - (12-19-15) Andrew Thomas, the man shot by a Paradise police officer after a chase that ended in a rollover crash, is dead.
The nursing supervisor at Enloe Medical Center confirmed Thomas died at approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with family at his side.
Early Thanksgiving morning, Officer Patrick Feaster of the Paradise Police Department pursued Thomas after he suspected him of getting behind the wheel drunk.
The chase ended on Pearson Road, when Thomas hit the median and rolled his Toyota 4Runner ejecting and killing his ex-wife, Darien Ehorn, 23. As Thomas pulled himself from the wrecked SUV, Feaster shot him once in the neck, which left Thomas paralyzed from the neck down.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey ruled that the shooting was accidental, and said his office would not prosecute Feaster.
That set off a wave of protests both online and in the community. "Fire Feaster" protests have been happening nearly daily since Ramsey made the announcement.
In a clarifying letter sent to the community in the wake of those protests, Ramsey said one of the reasons Feaster could not be charged was because Thomas had not died.
Feaster is also facing an internal investigation. The Paradise Police Chief has said she expects a decision in January.

Icy conditions caused officer to stumble, accidentally shoot car theft suspect, police said
DENVER - (12-18-15) Aurora police said one of their own officers slipped on ice and accidentally fired his weapon on Thursday night, critically wounding a car theft suspect he had been chasing.
The officer was on icy ground, when he stumbled and lost his footing, causing him to accidentally fire the weapon he had in his hand, Aurora police said. He was using the weapon-mounted flashlight at the time, police said.
The Aurora police officer was part of the Metro Auto Theft Task Force investigating a prolific auto theft ring out of Commerce City. The two Aurora officers and a Colorado State Trooper were following a stolen white Honda Thursday night when the Honda pulled into UPS lot in Denver, abandoned the vehicle, and got into a black Acura that sped away, police said.
The officers followed the Acura for several blocks when, near Stapleton Drive and Ivy Street, the vehicle tried to perform an evasive maneuver and got high centered on snowbank and was pinned in by an Aurora police officer and the trooper, Aurora police Chief Nick Metz said during a Friday afternoon news conference.
The Aurora officer drew his gun and ordered the suspect to get out of the vehicle.
The suspect was out of the car when the officer "appeared to have lost his footing and doing so, fired one shot," which hit the suspect, Metz said.
The officer immediately radioed in that there had been an unintentional shooting and requested medical aid for the driver. The trooper provided medical aid until medics arrived. Denver police officers responded to the scene, along with Aurora police, as part of the joint Officer Involved Shooting protocol.
The suspect is currently in critical but stable condition. Police said he had been shot in the "upper left quadrant."
He was identified as 20-year-old Christopher Padilla. He has two outstanding warrants out of Arvada for motor vehicle theft and another warrant out of Jefferson County for similar crimes.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave as is standard protocol. He has not been identified but Metz said the officer is a 16-year veteran of the Aurora Police Department and is a recognized expert in auto theft crimes. He has no prior involvement in shootings, Metz said.
Denver police are investigating the shooting since it occurred in their jurisdiction.
Denver7 has checked the numbers and there have been 11 officer-involved shootings since Halloween along the Front Rage, including this one.

Woman shot accidentally as pal showed off pistol: Toronto Police
TORONTO - (12-18-15) - A man was allegedly showing off his pistol when it accidentally discharged at a party in North York Thursday night and wounded an 18-year-old woman.
Toronto Police allege the woman left the party with the gunman and called 911 just after 10:30 p.m. from the area of Sheppard Ave. E. and Provost Dr., just west of Leslie St., with a "made up" story.
"The victim claimed she was shot during a robbery," Const. Victor Kwong said Friday.
The tall tale briefly led cops to believe the woman was the third innocent victim targeted by violence in less than a week, a source told the Sun.
"But our investigation later revealed the shooting happened at a party," Kwong said. "A 27-year-old man was trying to show off his gun to the woman and he accidentally shot her."
He said the woman was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to her arm.
"It's not life-threatening," Kwong said.
The shooting came barely 48 hours after a botched street robbery in which cancer researcher Mark Ersting, 39, stabbed to death while out for an evening stroll on McGill St., near Ryerson University.
Calvin Michael Nimoh, 21, was arrested an hour later — allegedly during another violent robbery — and charged with second-degree murder.
And last Friday afternoon Rosemarie Junor, 28, was shopping at a Shoppers Drug Mart, near Bay and Wellington Sts., when police say a woman attacked her "without provocation."
The stranger plunged a knife into the Scarborough woman's chest and she died five days later.
Rohinie Bisesar, 40, is charged with second-degree murder in that killing.
Kwong said a man was arrested following Thursday night's accidental shooting but the gun has not been recovered.
The accused, whose name was not immediately released, is charge with aggravated assault and gun-related offences. chris.doucette@sunmedia.ca
