Woman injured in Elyria accidental shooting

ELYRIA — (10-20-15)  Police were called to a home for an accidental shooting around 3 p.m. Monday after a homeowner with a concealed carry permit shot herself in the leg.

Elyria Police Lt. William Pelko said Nicole Gillette, of the 500 block of Baldwin Street, was putting a 9 mm handgun back into a safe when she dropped it. Gillette tried grabbing the gun before it hit the ground and it  fired and a bullet grazed her calf, Pelko said.
Gillette’s toddler daughter was at home when the accident occurred, Pelko said, but she wasn’t harmed.
Gillette, who was fully alert and conscious following the accident, was transported by LifeCare to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Pelko said Gillette wasn’t seriously injured and she and her daughter are lucky something worse didn’t happen.
“She was out running some errands and came home,” Pelko said. “She has a CCW permit and was putting the gun in the safe because she has kids there. Somehow it fell out of her hand and fired. Thank goodness that’s all that happened.”
Pelko said although a report hasn’t been finalized, firearms or child endangerment charges won’t likely be filed against Gillette.

Hilton Head guard shoots self in the foot; 2nd shooting accident this year in Palmetto Dunes

(10-20-15)  A security guard for Palmetto Dunes was taken to the hospital Oct. 14 after he accidentally shot himself in the foot while demonstrating firearm safety for another security officer, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The incident is the second accidental gun discharge reported by a security guard in the Hilton Head Island gated community this year.

Deputies responded at about 1:20 a.m. Oct. 14 on Queens Folly Road where they spoke with a security officer who said he was working at the south traffic gatehouse on Ocean Lane with the guard who shot himself, according to the report.

The guard said he was scheduled to qualify at the shooting range the following week to become an armed officer and was getting tips on loading and unloading his .40-caliber Glock 22 pistol from the other guard.

The guard had unloaded the gun and was about to reload it, with it pointed at the floor, when he "inadvertently discharged his weapon," the report said. The bullet went through his right boot and foot.

The guard later reached the main traffic gatehouse on Queens Folly Road and was transported to Hilton Head Hospital.

On Feb. 20, another Palmetto Dunes security officer accidentally fired her Glock pistol while disassembling the weapon to clean it, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Stockton fatality: Man cleaning gun accidentally shoots self

STOCKTON — (10-20-15)   A young man died in an accidental shooting Monday evening in south Stockton.
The shooting was reported at 5:34 p.m. in the 3300 block of Zamora Way, just south of Ralph Avenue and east of Reverend Holmes Park. The San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Marcus Gary Smith, 20, of Stockton.
According to the Stockton Police Department, Smith was in the garage at the residence cleaning a partially disassembled .22-caliber firearm when the gun discharged, striking him in the face. The shooting occurred in front of Smith’s mother, who was in the garage with him at the time, police said.
Smith was rushed to San Joaquin General Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries, authorities said.
Officer Joe Silva, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department, said gun owners should exercise extreme caution when handling their firearms.
“For obvious safety reasons, a person should always think that any gun at any time is loaded until they safely check the gun to determine that it is unloaded,” Silva said. “While checking the gun, keep it pointed in a safe direction and never have your finger on the trigger.”
