Pasadena Police: Officer accidentally discharges gun, colleague shot in leg

(10-5-15)  PASADENA--The Pasadena Police department is conducting an internal investigation after an officer accidentally discharged a gun and shot a fellow officer in the leg Friday night, an official said Monday.

The department didn’t release the names of the two officers because it is a personnel matter.

The officer was placed on paid leave pending the result of the internal administrative investigation while the other officer is off duty due to the injury, according to Lt. Mark Goodman. He said the preliminary investigation reveals no crime occurred.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Friday at a parking structure on Ramona Street between Garfield Avenue and Marengo Avenue.

Goodman said the two male officers were on duty at the time and were unloading items from the trunk of a police car.

He didn’t have details on how the shooting happened.

“One officer unintentionally discharged a gun,” Goodman said, adding that the round struck the other officer in the leg. He described the injury as “non-life threatening.”

The bullet went through the leg. The injured officer was taken to a hospital, treated and released, he said.

“No members of the public were present during the incident,” Goodman said.

Police: 8-Year-Old Killed After Gun Falls to Floor, Discharges (Update)
Sharia Lynch died from a gunshot wound to the head in the Saturday accident in Dallas.

(10-8-15)  Paulding County authorities have identified the victims in a fatal accidental shooting during the weekend in Dallas.

The incident resulted in the death of Sharia Lynch, 8, and wounding of her mother, Marsha Lynch, 45, police said. The incident happened just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at a residence on Fairview Drive.

According to the mother, a handgun fell to the floor and discharged, hitting the mother in the leg and the daughter in the head, the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said Monday morning. Detectives are still investigating exactly where the gun fell.

The girl was transported to an awaiting life-flight helicopter, but her condition worsened and she was re-routed to a local hospital. “Miss Sharia Lynch passed away while enroute to Paulding Wellstar Hospital,” PCSO Public Information Officer Sgt. Ashley Henson said in a news release.

The mother was taken to Floyd Medical Center in Rome, where she underwent surgery.

“At this point, detectives are still investigating this case and will speak to the victim and witnesses in more detail once the funeral has taken place,” Henson said.

UMKC dorm flooded by gunshot

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - (10-23-15)
Someone who accidentally fired a gun inside a university dormitory ended up causing a very large mess.

Thursday night students were forced to evacuate the Oak Street Residence Hall on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City when fire alarms went off about 6:54 p.m.

“We had an accidental discharge of a firearm. The bullet pierced the pipe for the sprinkler system. That automatically set off a fire alarm, then the water started gushing,” said John Martellaro, the director of media relations for UMKC.

The burst pipe caused extensive flooding and damage to rooms. The next day, cleaning crews were still on site.

Police are looking for the suspects. Per school policy, guns aren’t allowed in the dorms or on campus.

“Yes, it very well could have (ended tragically) and that’s why they’re not allowed in these buildings. And we’ve had some very frank conversations with the students to remind them. You know, this is a perfect example of what can go wrong. I mean, a person was not trying to fire the gun. They just had it out and it discharged,” Martellaro said.

Students like Ayana Roberson say the news was unnerving.

“It just made me kind of feel like I can’t just freely walk around the dorm by myself anymore. Just knowing that anyone could have a gun,” she said.

Others are now looking for guidance in case there’s another gun incident.

“There should be more classes for people to know what to do. Because I don’t think anyone would know what to do if that were to happen. So, if they’re going to be gun-free zones, I feel like we should be able to have a class or some sort of public announcement on what to do,” Nicolette Mazarowski said.

A school spokesperson said there isn’t currently a policy in place on what to do in a gun incident, but they are looking into it.
