Severn, MD  (9-14-15)  One person was injured after a shooting at gun range in Anne Arundel County.  

The shooting happened at the On Target Maryland indoor shooting range on the 2600 block of Annapolis Road in Severn on Monday afternoon.      One person was injured in what appears to be an accidental shooting, SkyTeam 11 Capt. Roy Taylor said. The person was taken to Shock Trauma in critical condition, police said.

Officer saves teen in accidental shooting

Tulsa, Ne (9-14-15) An officer’s quick actions saved a Tulsa teen Sunday afternoon.
A 16-year-old shot himself in the leg; when police arrived, he was conscious but incoherent.

Officer Brian Wilson, fearing the teen had severed an artery, applied a tourniquet to the teen.
Medics took the victim to St. John’s in serious condition. Doctors confirmed he had severed an artery with the gun shot, and Wilson had saved the victim’s life by preventing him from bleeding to death.
Officers say this is the second time the teen has accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Hull man charged with murder in shooting death of girlfriend

Hull, Ga  (9-14-15)  A 35-year-old Hull man remained Monday in the Madison County Jail on charges of murdering his girlfriend Friday evening at their home, a spokesman for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.
James Telvie Samples is charged with felony murder, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Samples admitted shooting 22-year-old Candace Michelle Welch once in the chest with a small-caliber handgun, Lt. Jimmy Patton said Monday.
The suspect told deputies that the shooting was accidental, Patton said.

Clark County teen accidentally shot in chest

Springfield, Oh  (9-14-15) A Clark County teen was accidentally shot in the chest Saturday, the Clark County Sheriff’s office announced in a press release Monday.
The 17-year-old male was shot at a home in the 3300 block of Laura Lane in Mad River Twp. just before 7 p.m. and taken to the Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to the press release. The hospital then alerted the sheriff’s office to investigate the shooting.

Sheriff’s investigators determined that an unnamed 19-year-old who thought the gun was unloaded ‘dry fired’ the weapon and struck the 17-year-old in the chest.
The victim was treated at and then transferred to Miami Valley Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Georgia teenager accidentally shot and killed his 17-year-old friend during 'horseplay' with a gun

Monroe County, GA (9-14-15) A Georgia teenager has died after he was shot by a friend who was 'recklessly' playing with a gun, according to police.
Officers believe that the 18-year-old suspect Kaleb Oliver Greene had been engaged in 'horseplay' when he accidentally shot Gabryon Walker in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The 17-year-old victim was rushed to Medical Center Navicent Health but was pronounced dead at 2.45am, September 12

Allison Selman-Willis, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer, said officers were called out to the tragic shooting in Old Rumble Road at 1.30am.
But when they arrived, they found that the suspect had already fled.

Witnesses claimed that Greene had disappeared into the nearby woods shortly after the incident, but he was tracked down 'several hours later' with the help of dog teams from the Georgia Department of Corrections, to a home in Houston County.
Selman-Willis told AJC: 'Two other teens who were present when the shooting occurred told deputies that the suspect fled on foot into some nearby woods.'

Madison, Wi  (9-13-15) Madison police say a woman is expected to recover from what they're calling an accidental shooting Saturday night.

Officers were called to a home in the 4000 block of Lori Circle where a man reported he'd shot the woman while cleaning his gun.

Accidental shooting takes the life of a Pennsylvania police chief

Bessemer, Pa  (9-13-15)   According to Pennsylvania State Police, Thomas Edward Macri, 56, accidentally shot himself in the chest while cleaning a .40 caliber pistol Sunday at his Shenango Township home.

Macri is a retired New Castle Police Officer — and has been serving as the chief in Bessemer since he retired.

State Police say there is no  sign of foul play.

Police: Accidental shooting leaves Athens teen hospitalized

Athens, Al  (6-28-15) - An accidental shooting in Limestone County has left one teen hospitalized.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson says that at 2:30 this morning, they received a call about a shooting victim. 

Police said the 19-year-old victim had been shot in his side and was brought to Athens-Limestone Hospital in a personal vehicle. The victim was then flown to Huntsville Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Investigators say that after speaking with the victim's friends, they believe the shooting to be accidental.

According to police, the victim and his friends were in the Walmart parking lot talking and looking at a pistol when the gun was fired, striking the victim. 

No one has been charged at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

The condition of the victim is unknown at this time.

Wisconsin man Vaughn Rothering accidentally shoots rommate while teasing cat with laser sight

Onalaska, Wi  (9-13-15)   A man who accidentally shot his roommate while teasing a cat with its laser sight has been fined $50.

Vaughn Rothering, 22, was sat on the porch of hids Onalaska, Wisconsin home with his roommate and teasing a cat with the laser sight of his 9mm pistol, reports the LaCrosse Tribune.

Rothering said he was spinning the gun in his hand went it went off and hit his roommate’s ankle.

‘I feel terrible about it,’ said Rothering, who his lawyer described as ‘thoughtful, polite, respectful.’

Rothering pleaded guilty to negligent handling of a dangerous weapon and was fined $50 on top of court costs of $541.

‘You could easily have killed your friend,’ Judge Ramona Gonzalez told Rothering.

‘You’ve probably punished yourself more than we could ever punish you.’

Autopsy results released in deadly Peoria shooting

PEORIA, Ill. - (9-12-15)  Autopsy results have been released for the 15-year-old Peoria boy, who died Friday night from what appeared to be an accidental shooting.
According to the Peoria County Coroner, DeMarco Irby, Jr. suffered injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

HUNTER REPORTED SHOT, DIES ON GRAND MESA

MESA COUNTY, Colo.  (9-13-15)  The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says one person is dead after a hunting accident Sunday morning on the Grand Mesa.

The individual's name has not been released, but the shooting is believed to be accidental. The man was hunting with his father and friends.

Two witnesses who were hunting in the area said they heard gunshots, followed by screams and cries for help.

The man’s death comes on the first weekend that guns are allowed to be used for big game hunting across Colorado. It is unknown if the man was wearing a safety vest.

In a release Sunday the Sheriff's Office said they received a call through dispatch at around 8:30 a.m. about a hunter being shot near the Big Creek Campground on the Grand Mesa. Deputies responded to the scene along with the Collbran Marshall and Plateau Valley Fire Department.

The Mesa County Coroner was notified and will work to determine the cause and manner of death and identify the person

12-Year old accidentally shot in the Middle Tennessee area

Tullahoma, Tn  (8-27-15)  A 12-year-old boy was injured after what appears to be an accidental shooting.
Tullahoma officials say the incident involved a hunting rifle and took place Friday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. Officials said the victim was taken to Harton Regional Medical center by his parents before being taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
According to Winston Brooks with City of Tullahoma, the 12-year-old was responsive after the accidental shooting on Avondale Lane.
His condition is unknown at this time.

Colorado Springs, Co  (9-11-15)    Officer McClellan and Officer Crockett were dispatched to the 100 block of N. Academy Blvd. regarding a shooting. Investigation revealed that a male was sitting in a vehicle and did not want to take his concealed gun into a business. The male was taking his gun out of a holster that he had been wearing, removed the clip and placed the gun on the floor. While placing the gun on the floor the gun fired one round into the male’s foot. This was determined to be an accidental shooting and no one was charged. The male was transported to Memorial Hospital for treatment

15 YR OLD DIES AFTER BEING SHOT IN THE HEAD

Queens, NY  (9-12-15)   Roughhousing by four 15-year-old pals ended in tragedy when a gun accidentally went off in a Queens apartment Friday, fatally shooting one of the teens in the head, the victim’s best friend said.
Wilta Wordsworth and best friend Nia Skrine were hanging out with two boys in Wordsworth’s Far Rockaway apartment when one of the boys pulled out a gun, Skrine said Saturday.
“He was playing with it, and it went off,” Skrine said.

The bullet struck Wordsworth, police said.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Skrine said. “I kept touching her. She wouldn’t wake up. She was stiff.”

NEIGHBOR SHOT BY DEPUTIES DURING RANCHO CORDOVA STANDOFF

Cordova, Ca  (9-11-15)  A man who held a cellphone out of his garage door to see what was happening during a police standoff in Rancho Cordova was shot and injured by Sacramento sheriff's deputies.

As a SWAT team was trying to apprehend Ben Ledford, 62, for firing a machine gun across the street, authorities said they saw another man in the neighboring home go out to the edge of the garage and extend his arm with an object in it.

Sanchez's father John "Sonny" Sanchez said the object was a cellphone and his son was trying to videotape the arrest of Ledford, when he was shot in the leg.
“He was yelling, 'Dad I’m shot, I’m shot,' so I grabbed him inside and closed the garage door. I put a tourniquet around his leg and a clean towel," John Sanchez said.
Sanchez pointed out four bullet holes in his garage and several more in his car.
“You can see how many shots they did: one, two three, four -- shooting at my son with a cell phone. C’mon that’s ridiculous," Sanchez said.

“I think it’s reasonable to think that the officers perceived an immediate threat either to themselves or continued threat to that individual,” said Sgt. Jason Ramos, of the Sacramento County Sheriff's department.

Peoria, IL  (9-11-15)   Authorities say the 15-year-old has passed away. Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says Demarco Irby, Jr died earlier Friday afternoon at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. The initial autopsy indicates a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Peoria Police say Tuesday's shooting on Starr Street appears to have been accidental.
Witnesses say a 15 year old boy was playing with a handgun when it went off and he was shot once in the head.

Security guard accidentally shoots self in leg during gun practice

Birmingham Al (9-11-15)   A security guard was injured this afternoon when he accidentally shot himself at an indoor practice range.
The shooting happened just after 1:30 p.m. at Security Engineers Inc. in the 1600 block of Third Avenue North. Authorities said the victim shot himself in the leg.

Reporters were asked to leave the property. Mark Quimby, the company's manager of training and firearms instructor, in an email this evening said the security officer had holstered his weapon with his finger properly off the trigger when the gun fired.

"While most accidental gunshot wounds are due to negligence and carelessness, his was due to a faulty primer/powder charge in the cartridge chambered in his weapon," Quimby wrote. "When he attempted to fire, the powder in his cartridge did not properly ignite and therefore the weapon misfired.  As he was reholstering, not knowing the gun didn't cycle because other people were shooting at the same time, which is standard protocol for all firing ranges, the powder finally fully ignited and caused the projectile (bullet) to exit the barrel.

"This is called a 'cook off' where a delayed powder ignition delays the firing of the weapon,'' he explained. "They are rare, but do happen. Usually there isn't enough force to allow the projectile to fully exit the barrel."

Boulder sheriff's commander accidentally shoots self in leg, but finishes practice round

Boulder, Co  (9-10-15) A veteran Boulder County sheriff's commander accidentally shot himself in the leg Thursday while training at the department's firing range near Longmont.

Cmdr. Rick Brough was taking part in routine training at the Longmont Police Department and Boulder County Sheriff's Office Firing Range and Training Facility at 10916 Weld County Road 5 at 9:40 a.m. when he accidentally fired a ball round from a .45-caliber handgun into his thigh while unholstering the gun, sheriff's division chief Tommy Sloan said.

Sloan said Brough was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies near Loveland for treatment, and was released from the hospital by 3 p.m. Thursday

Sloan said accidentally firing a handgun while unholstering it is one of the more common handgun injuries, and he was glad this accident wasn't more serious

"It can be very tragic, and that's why we've got the necessary precautions with the range officer and the first aid kit right there," Sloan said.

WFPD Investigating Accidental Shooting Death

Wichita Falls, Tx   (9-10-15)  Police are investigating an accidental death that occurred Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials, around 2:44 p.m. a passerby saw a body on the floor of a half-open garage next to a vehicle in a residence in the 2500 block of McNiel..
Police arrived on the scene and discovered 50-year-old Jeffrey Rohling dead, with a single gunshot wound to the torso.
Police say the victim was carrying several items, including the gun, when the gun discharged and shot Rohling.
 It is currently being investigated as an accidental shooting. The body has been sent to Tarrant County for autopsy.

Teen charged after accidentally shooting himself in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa.   (9-10-15)   A 15-year-old boy is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself in Harrisburg on Saturday.

Officers responded to 2nd and Sayford Streets for a report of shots being fired shortly after 9:15 p.m.

Investigators found the teen with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg. The boy told police he accidentally shot himself, but refused to tell them where he got the gun or what happened to the gun. The teen’s injuries were not life threatening.

Baton Rouge police: Store owner accidentally shoots, wounds himself

Baton Rouge, La  (9-10-15)  One of the owners of a store on Airline Highway accidentally shot and wounded himself Thursday afternoon while getting into his car, the Baton Rouge police said.

The victim, whom police did not identify, was on his way to another business owned by the family. As he pulled a handgun out of his back pocket outside the In and Out Wireless Store at 7310 Airline Highway, the gun accidentally discharged, striking him in the leg, said Cpl. Don Coppola Jr., a spokesman for the Baton Rouge police.

Coppola said the victim was taken to a hospital but his injuries are not life-threatening.

Man Injured in Bizarre Accident at Frisco Gun Club

Frisco, Tx  (9-9-15) A freak accident at a gun range in Frisco Wednesday afternoon sent one man to the hospital.
  “We had a gentleman who was shooting on our 25-yard pistol range, and he was reloading a magazine.  In the process of that, he drops one of the bullets to the ground.  Something malfunctioned with that bullet and it ignited.  A little bit of the casing flew up and hit him in the leg and arm,” explained Brandon Johnson, the Vice President of Marketing.  “It was very unusual… 

Johnson said he was proud of the way his staff handled the situation.  “They did exactly as they have been trained.  We provided immediate medical attention and cleared everyone off of the range.  We have a fantastic safety record here, and we are doing the right things.  We have range officers that walk the line that make sure our customers and members are behaving in a safe manor.  It was kind of a fluke thing that happened today.”

Cincinnati man hospitalized in possible accidental shooting   

Cincinnati, Oh  (9-9-15)  One man was hospitalized in what police believe to be an accidental shooting in Cincinnati’s Walnut Hills section.    The Cincinnati Enquirer reports police were called to an apartment on Victory Parkway around 8 p.m. Tuesday.      Sgt. Jeff Howell says responding officers found the victim, who wasn’t identified, inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach.

The victim was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was still undergoing surgery Tuesday night.
Howell says police detained two men who were also in the apartment for questioning. It’s unclear if they will face any charges.
Police are not searching for any suspects at this time. Howell says “it’s very possible” the incident was an accidental shooting.

 Playing with a gun sent one man to the hospital and landed a Cornelia man in jail.

Cornelia, Ga - (9-8-15)  When officers arrived, they found that 21-year-old Arron Pope had been shot in the cheek with a 9-mm handgun.    Cornelia police Tuesday morning released details of the incident that occurred at 5 p.m. Thursday at Crown Point Apartments on Baldwin Road.

Pope was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of facial injuries.
Witnesses Charles Riley, 19, of Cornelia, and A.J. Gordy, 22, told officers they had been playing with the pistol they thought was unloaded.
Riley was arrested and charged with reckless conduct. He was booked in at the Habersham County Detention Center.

Teenager in Allamakee County injured in accidental shooting

Allamakke County, Ia  (9-8-15)   15-year-old boy was injured during an accidental shooting during the holiday weekend.

The Allamakee County Sheriff's Office says it happened late Saturday night at a home on Hickory Creek Road.

Authorities say the teenager accidentally shot a small caliber revolver, hitting him in the hand and leg.

The boy was treated at Veterans Memorial Hospital and released.

Thefts, accidental shooting investigated by county deputies

Houston, Tx (9-8-15) A deputy responded to a report of a gunshot victim at Texas County Memorial Hospital on Aug. 28.
The officer made contact with a 30-year-old Solo man at the hospital, who had a bullet wound in his foot.
The man stated he had been target practicing with a .22-caliber weapon, when he accidentally discharged it at his foot.

Man recovering after accidentally shooting himself at local gun range

Harrison, Tn (9-8-15)   A man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself at a local gun range over the holiday weekend. Although the man suffered a minor injury, gun owners say it's a reminder to always pay close attention on the range.
It happened on Sunday afternoon at Carter Shooting Supply in Harrison.
"One of our range members was out there shooting, and when he went to holster his gun, it went off. We're not sure if he had his finger on the trigger, if the holster hit the trigger, or if his gun malfunctioned," said owner, Kristi Manning.--

"It's not something that we're trying to sweep under the rug. We want everyone to know we are still safe," she said.
Carter Shooting Supply's gun range isn't open to the public. Everyone has to be a member or a guest of a member. All shooters must sign safety and liability waivers, and the rules on the range are clearly posted.
Additionally, each shooting booth is separated by steel walls, in case an accident does happen.
"If you do anything long enough, you're gonna have that accident to think 'Oh man, that could've really been bad'. It's kind of one of those things that bring you back into the careful state of things," said Manning.
Again, this happened out on the shooting range and not inside the store. It is the first gun-related accident on the property since Carter Shooting Supply opened 14 years ago.

Man, woman claim they accidentally shot themselves, police say

SALEM, Or   (9-7-15) – A man and woman ran to their neighbors house on Sunday afternoon saying they'd accidentally shot themselves at their Salem home.

Police were called out to the house on Duncan Avenue Northeast at around 5:30 p.m.
The man was shot in his side; he was taken to the hospital for treatment. The woman was shot in the hand and treated at the scene.
Police at the scene said they are still trying to confirm whether the shooting was an accident.
