Burglary led to accidental shooting

POCATELLO, ID  (1-28-16) — An accidental shooting on Wednesday was the result of a woman's response to a home burglary, according to her husband Randy Schiffman.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the Schiffman home at about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday after Megan Schiffman received a minor gunshot wound to her leg. Randy said his wife was wounded while investigating noises coming from downstairs in the family home. She was upstairs where her two girls slept while her son was downstairs sleeping in his bedroom. The children are ages 8 months to 5 years.

“She heard some noises and thought there were people in the house,” Randy said.

Randy said he was at work, and his family was home alone. Megan picked up a 9mm Smith & Wesson semi-automatic that belongs to her husband and went downstairs to investigate.

“She slipped on the stairs and the gun discharged,” Randy said.

The husband said the gunshot apparently caused the people who entered the house to flee. Randy said the couple's children slept through the entire episode.

(5 wounded/ 1 dead) Gunskilltoo Jan 27th; Two yr old and cop shoot selves, home defense gone wrong

Should I summarize?

A New Orleans Sheriff is shot in the hand after a gun "malfunction."  But we want to train kids to use guns?   In Waldorf, MD an as yet unidentified  man, who neighbors say wears a uniform (security guard?) laid down his handgun.  His two year old picked the gun up and shot itself in the leg.   Another trained professional?    In Bloomington, IN, a 21 year old man shot himself with a glock he'd just purchased.  He was sitting on the couch playing with his new toy.   A Meriden, CT man shot himself at home, sparse details.  Just another silly accident.   These plus the crazy robbery gone bad, in which one of the perps apparently shot themselves during the getaway in Baytown TX.    Now this late addition, in Holiday, FL a home defense gone wrong, a 16 yr old girl shot.

BAYTOWN, TX  (1-27-16) -- Police say four men went to a home in Baytown to attack another man, and in the process, one suspect was accidentally shot and later died.

Just before 10pm Monday, police were called to the intersection of Tumbleweed Lane and Coyote Lane after a couple of guys were spotted unsuccessfully trying to get an injured man into a gray Impala. Officers found David Andrew Pena, 22, and determined he had been shot in the torso. Pena was taken to Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital where he died.

Detectives looking for witnesses discovered the front door of a home in the 4100 block of Tumbleweed had been forced open. They entered the home and found the body of Branyon Fehring, 23. Fehring had been shot multiple and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A nearby officer spotted a speeding gray Impala and pulled over the driver. Behind the wheel, Renaldo Cardona, 20, had blood on his clothing.

After questioning, detectives say Cardona, Pena, Tristan Fulkerson, 19; and Timothy Toulliet, 17, had gone to Fehring's home and killed him. They say that while the four were punching and shooting, Fehring, Fulkerson accidentally shot Pena in the torso. Police add the men unsuccessfully tried to get Pena into the Impala before leaving him at the crime scene.

Two-year-old who accidentally shot himself with father's gun in Waldorf is recovering

WALDORF, Md.   (1-27-16) — It was an urgent call Wednesday afternoon at the Adams Crossing Apartments in Waldorf.    "It was a shocker," recalls Shenita Lane. "I would never have thought that this would ever have happened to him."

The focus of an emergency 9-1-1 call: a two-year-old boy shot at close range.   "Little boy shot himself with his father's gun," says Devonta Dotson, a neighbor.   Arriving officers found the toddler, wounded and crying.    The father told investigators he had been taking a nap.

"He woke up when he heard a gunshot," says Janelle Love, a Charles County Sheriff's Office spokesperson. "He came out to find his two-year-old had accidentally shot himself in the leg, and the gun was laying nearby."

Shocked neighbors looked on, as the youngster was transported to the hospital.   "We just saw a lady carrying him out," Dotson says. "He was just like, out of it as she carried him to the ambulance."   First responders who treated the boy said later he was 'alert and conscious' as he was transported.

According to Maryland law, the loaded semi-automatic handgun should have been stored in a locked cabinet or secured with a gunlock.   It was not.    "It is against the law to have a firearm within reach of children that is not locked up safe and secure," Love says.

Police aren't commenting on the father's profession, but sources say he is a security guard.   Neighbors say he typically wears a uniform and drives an unmarked car.

"I've always seen him with the kids, out playing with the kids," says Shenita Lane, who lives across the hall. "In and out, going back and forth to work, but I never thought he would have laid the gun down. Never."    How the two-year-old was able to get ahold of the gun and pull the trigger is unclear.    Residents describe the father as a doting parent, who this day was alone in the apartment with his son.

"Be more careful," Lane says. "If you're going to get one, lock it up. Just lock it up. Keep it so the kids never get to it."

Authorities aren't saying if the gun is the father's personal firearm, or a service weapon.    Police are not identifying the father or his son.    No charges have been filed.   That will be up to the State's Attorney's Office.     A decision on charges is expected to take about a week.

Neighbors are relieved the toddler's life isn't in danger.     "It could have been worse," Dotson says. "Thank God he's still here. Speedy recovery, hopefully."

Deputy accidentally fires gun inside Civil Courts building

ST. LOUIS (1-26-16) — The St. Louis Sheriff’s Department is investigating an accidental shooting inside the Civil Courts building in downtown St. Louis on Monday.

According to a spokesperson for the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri it happened between 6 and 6:30 Monday morning before the courthouse was open to the public in an office used by deputies. Thom Gross says the deputy was “holstering his weapon” when it discharged. The bullet passed through a wall and lodged in a judge’s desk in the judge’s chambers.

Gross says no one was injured and the judge was not in the chambers at the time.

Michael Guzy with the St. Louis Sheriff’s department says the deputy has been suspended without pay pending an investigation and that it is too soon to know what, if any, discipline the deputy could face.

“We take fire arm safety very, very seriously for all of the obvious reasons,” said Guzy.

He says it is too soon to know what, if any, discipline the deputy could face but criminal charges are a possibility. He says a drug test is standard after any fire arm is discharged by a deputy on the job and the department is awaiting those results. Guzy says at this time there is no reason to suspect the deputy was impaired but he can say the deputy was not involved in any kind of security situation at the time the gun went off.

The St. Louis Sheriff’s Department provides security for 31 divisional courtrooms, according to the department’s website.

Norman man accidentally shot in hunting incident

MARTHA, OK (1-26-16) -A Norman man was shot in the face Tuesday in a hunting accident in Jackson County.

Dillon Mauk and three other men were hunting geese on private property and had set up several goose decoys in a wheat field. The property owner saw the decoys from a distance, thought they were real and fired his .22 rifle at them several times hoping to scare them away. When the geese stayed put, he fired several more shots and ultimately hit Mauk in the mouth.

The bullet hit him near his mouth and got lodged near his jaw, but Jackson County Sheriff Roger Levick says the man was up and talking after the incident. He was taken to the OU Medical Center to have surgery to remove the bullet, but all signs point to him making a full recovery.

The four men were hunting in an irrigation ditch with their blinds set up and were completely camouflaged when Mauk was shot. They told the sheriff's department that they thought they had permission to hunt on the land.

"My understanding was a neighboring property owner told them it would be ok to hunt there, but the actual land owner had no knowledge," Sheriff Levick said.

Sheriff Levick says the property owner was a few hundred yards away when he began firing at the field.

"He was at such a distance, you couldn't see the kids that were hunting. All you could see was a large number of, like a flock of geese on your wheat. He followed the letter of the law where you've got the right as a property owner to protect your property from the damages that they do," Sheriff Levick explained.

Sheriff Levick says the situation is an unfortunate one that could have been prevented had the hunters gotten more than just verbal confirmation to hunt on the land.

"If I give someone permission to hunt on my property, with that I will write it out where if they are approached by a neighbor or by a game ranger then they can present that they do have permission to be on my property. Had the land owner known or given permission and knew they were out there, this wouldn't have happened," Sheriff Levick said.

Sheriff Levick says in all hunting related incidents, his department hands the reins over to the game warden who, in this case, decided not to press charges against any of the men.

The property owner also decided against pressing charges for trespassing.

Woman shot at firing range
Deputies: AK-47 went off accidentally

CORDOVA, NC   (1-26-16)   —A young woman was airlifted to a Chapel Hill hospital following an accidental shooting early Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office say a group of five people were target practicing at a range down Old Time Way — a private road off Old Cheraw Highway — when the 23-year-old was shot.

The group was target practicing with an AK-47, investigators say. The victim had taken her turn firing and was handing the rifle to another person when the it accidentally discharged and a bullet struck her in the knee.

Deputies rushed to the scene, along with an ambulance from FirstHealth EMS and crews from Cordova Fire and Rescue. Firemen placed orange cones in a nearby hay field to set up a landing zone for the helicopter.

Around 2:30, the ambulance drove closer to the landing zone. The woman — whose name has not been released — could be heard screaming in pain from several hundred yards away.

The helicopter landed less than 10 minutes later. The victim was then transferred from the ambulance and flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill as a precaution.

Investigators say no charges will be filed.

According to statistics with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, based in Atlanta, Georgia, there were 215,422 unintentional, non-fatal firearms injuries reported from 2001 to 2013. Nearly 8 percent of those — 16,422 — were in 2013.

Statistics show that unintentional, non-fatal gunshot wounds are not even in the top 20 leading causes for non-fatal injury among any age group. However, unintentional injuries from a BB or pellet gun shot are the 20th-leading cause of injury for ages 10-14.

In 2014, records show there were 586 unintentional firearm-related deaths in the United States.

Akron teen accidentally shoots girlfriend with dad's gun, police say
(shooting occurred the 1st, police discovered original story was a lie)

AKRON, Ohio (1-26-16)— An Akron teen accidentally shot his 13-year-old-girlfriend in the stomach with his father's gun, Akron police said.

The teen was arrested on charges of felonious assault. His case is in Summit County Juvenile Court.

The boy's father, Tony Cox, 43, is charged with possessing a weapon despite having a felony record. His case has been bound over to Summit County Common Pleas Court.

The teen and his girlfriend attended First Night Akron on New Year's Eve at Lock 3 park. They left about 10 p.m. and went back to the teen's house in the 800 block of East Crosier Street. He grabbed his father's gun and began shooting at a garbage can with a target painted on the side for practice, according to court records.

The teen accidentally shot his girlfriend in the stomach. He drove her to his grandmother's house. The grandmother drove the girl to Akron Children's Hospital, court records say.

The two teens initially told police that a fight broke out at Lock 3 near the parking deck. They said a group of men started fighting, someone fired gunshots and that they ran back to their car and discovered that the girl had been shot.

Detectives asked officers working security at the event about a shooting. No one called to report gunshots or fighting from the Lock 3 that night, police said.

Officers questioned the teens again. They both admitted they made up the story about the Lock 3 fight, police said. The boy then told police he used his father's gun for the shooting.

Akron officers found the revolver on top of the refrigerator in the home, according to court records.

Cox is not allowed to possess a gun because of a criminal history that includes two convictions for engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity in crack cocaine trafficking cases.

He was sentenced to serve four years in prison in 2010 in one case and three years of probation in a similar case in 2000.

He also was sentenced to one year in prison in 2008 for two counts of domestic violence and one count of possessing a weapon as a felon.

Law & Order: Pawn shop employee shoots finger while cleaning handgun

St. Augustine, FL  (1-27-16)  A man was injured Tuesday morning after accidentally firing a pistol while cleaning it at a St. Augustine pawn shop.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue took Edward William Pomar III to Flagler Hospital after he shot himself in the ring finger of his left hand, according to an incident report from the St. Augustine Police Department.

An officer responded to USA Pawn Shop on the 2500 block of Ponce de Leon Boulevard around 10:30 a.m. after a report of an accidental shooting, police said.

The responding officer said he found Pomar, 62, sitting in the corner, alert and applying pressure to his left hand with a towel, according to the release.

Pomar, who was later identified as the store’s manager, told the officer he had been cleaning a Beretta semi-automatic handgun that he thought was unloaded when the gun fired and injured his hand, police said. Pomar told the officer he felt embarrassed but otherwise OK.

A witness who was in the shop when the gun went off confirmed Pomar’s version of events, according to the report.

The officer found nothing suspicious about the incident, police said.

Kennett loses long-time businessman

Kennett, MO  (1-26-16)  Long-time Kennett businessman Adolphus Riggs III, 72, died Monday. According to Captain Tim Trowbridge of the Kennett Police Department, officers were called to the 800 block of Emerson Street Monday morning. Investigators determined that the death appears to be an accidental shooting. Trowbridge reports that the preliminary investigation shows that Riggs returned home from a hunting trip sometime Sunday night. Apparently, while unloading his hunting shotgun, Riggs accidentally fired a single round, which struck him in the chest.
Riggs, owner of Riggs Supply, was actively involved in the community over the years. A 32nd Degree Mason, he served as local lodge president. He was a Shriner, was very active in the Boy Scouts as well as the local American Legion and VFW. Riggs was a member of the Eagles Club and Kennett Country Club and was past area chairman for Ducks Unlimited.

Riggs was the organizer of and for many years led Scouts in the distribution of American flags on Flag Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Trowbridge added that the KPD was thankful for the service Riggs rendered as a reserve police officer in 1974-1976. "Mr. Riggs continued to have personal contact with our officers and was always proud to boast about his serving in the past." Police Chief Johnny Dennis added that Riggs has willingly contributed to the department throughout the years in many ways and that his loss would be felt.

Riggs attended Central Methodist University and served his country in Vietnam from 1967-1969.

As of press time no memorial service had been announced.

Police identify child who found gun, accidentally shot self

FLINT, Mich. (1-25-16) — Police have released the name of a 3-year-old boy who died in Flint after apparently finding a loaded gun and accidentally shooting himself.

Flint police Chief James Tolbert tells The Flint Journal (http://bit.ly/1RIXXx3 ) that Karmelo Johnson was found dead after shooting himself in the head last Wednesday with a pistol at his great-grandparents' home.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicated that the child found the unsecured weapon and that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

Tolbert says the gun wasn't registered and investigators believe the adults present at the time weren't aware there was a handgun in the home. Tolbert has said his agency was seeking help from federal authorities to trace the gun and find out how it got into the home.

No arrests have been announced.

(occurred June 20, 2015.  Claim of shooting caused by training/ muscle memory)
Video: Minn. officer accidentally shoots, wounds suspect after pursuit

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (1-25-16)  — The officer later said firearms training 20 days prior might have been a contributing factor to muscle memory.  Police released video of an accidental shooting after a pursuit, FOX 9 reported.

Eden Prairie Sergeant Lonnie Soppeland had been pursuing then 21-year-old Matthew Hovland-Knase at speeds reaching 110 miles per hour on June 20, 2015. Eventually, Hovland-Knase pulled over to the side of the road and Soppeland jumped out of his cruiser with his gun drawn.

Soppeland commanded Hovland-Knase to raise his hands before accidentally firing. Hovland-Knase yelled, “I’m bleeding.”

Soppeland immediately administered aid and apologised to the suspect.

In the dash cam video, the two exchange words and acknowledged the shooting was not intentional.

Soppeland later told a detective during the investigation of the incident, “I drew my firearm with my right hand, I planned to steady it with my left hand. When my hands made contact, the firearm discharged once unintentionally. It was not my conscious choice.”

The detective asked if firearms training 20 days prior when Soppeland fired 50 to 100 rounds was a factor. Soppeland said it was.

“I feel the muscle memory from that recent training of squeezing the trigger contributed to the unintentional discharge during a high stress situation,” Soppeland said in the report.

Several firearms experts told the news site they had never heard of accidental shootings blamed on muscle memory but thought the stress of a pursuit could have been a factor.

“I'm not going to second guess the officer, but generally speaking, until you're ready to fire, your finger is alongside the slide or frame of the gun,” law enforcement firearms trainer John Caile told the news site.

Hovland-Knase was convicted of fleeing an officer last year. Soppeland is an 11-year veteran of the department.

A statement released by the police said based on the findings of the investigation, no further disciplinary action was taken.

Las Vegas Strip Closed After Gunfire, Officers Accidentally Shoot Passerby

Las Vegas NV  (1-24-16)  Police accidentally shot a young bystander after responding to an armed man walking in and out of traffic.

A section of the famous Las Vegas Strip was closed Saturday night following a confrontation between police and an armed man who was reportedly weaving in and out of traffic, according to CBS News. Officers accidentally hit a young passerby when shooting at the suspect.

Police reportedly received multiple calls about a man who was walking between traffic and brandishing a weapon at pedestrians near the Bellagio Hotel and arrived at the scene at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. Officers fired at the suspect after he failed to respond to verbal commands. A section of the Strip, which is generally an extremely busy part of the city, was shut for several hours while authorities investigated, The Las Vegas Sun reported.

While the armed man was not hit, a bullet did graze a juvenile bystander who was passing by, according to Reuters. The bystander was given medical attention and was released from the University Medical Center in good condition. A bullet also grazed the clothing of another passerby, but no damage was sustained.

Capt. Matt McCarthy of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police told reporters that the armed man is familiar to police and known for selling things to tourists on the Strip. A busker on the Strip, Rachel Jael, described the suspect as "a sweet guy, always polite" who "[wasn't] capable of hurting a fly," according to the Las Vegas Sun.

McCarthy added that the gunman will face several felony charges for the incident but declined to give any other details at this time. The identity of the officer involved in the shooting will be released after 48 hours in line with departmental policy.

Answering call in NLR, firefighter shot, killed

North Little Rock, AR (1-23-16) -  A central Arkansas firefighter was shot to death Friday morning after responding to a call for help at a North Little Rock residence.

Ronald Jason Adams, 20, of the East Pulaski Volunteer Fire Department responded shortly after 5 a.m. to a home at 211 Dortch Loop, off Faulkner Lake Road, according to the Pulaski County sheriff's office. A person at the residence was reported to be having a seizure.

The sheriff's office said that minutes after Adams was dispatched, it received a call that a firefighter been shot at the residence.

Adams was taken from the home to Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock, where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office arrested the homeowner, Mark Eugene Pruitt, later Friday. He was charged with manslaughter.

A handcuffed Pruitt, 47, spoke briefly to reporters while being transported from the sheriff's office to the Pulaski County jail.

"Someone come in the home," he said.

When asked if that person identified himself or was wearing a uniform, Pruitt said no.

Pulaski County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Chris Ameling said Pruitt was charged after he and his wife, Tonja, provided statements to investigators. Ameling also said investigators found physical evidence that led to the charge. He declined to elaborate.

Adams, who went by his middle name, Jason, lived in North Little Rock and responded to the call at the home because he was nearby, according to Ameling.

"Volunteer fire department members like that, sometimes they do respond in just regular, plainclothes -- their bluejeans, their T-shirt. Due to the time of morning, a lot of times they've got pagers on. And when that pager goes off, they respond in whatever they're wearing at the time," Ameling said.

The sheriff's office did not release further details in the case.

2 home invasion suspects arrested, 2 on the run, friend accidentally shot
2 suspects remain at large

SEABROOK, Texas  (1-23-16) - Bryan Johnson said it was a normal Friday night with five friends and their kids at his home in Seabrook.

While inside with his home surveillance camera playing on his TV screen, Johnson said he saw a terrifying scene start to unfold in real time. Three armed men crawled under his garage door and seconds later.

"One of the males with a shot gun opened the side garage door that steps into my house and he's asking my name," Johnson said. "They only knew my name because my friends told them that I was inside."

Johnson lives in a neighborhood near the Kemah Boardwalk and wasn't expecting the intruders, but took action.

"I was screaming at him 'drop the gun' and then he shut the door. I put three rounds through the door, he crawled out the garage door and I went out the front and opened a few more rounds at them," Johnson said.

Seabrook police said that's about the time the intruder's driver took off, and the three men ran away.

Officers found and arrested two of the suspects, Noah Simpson from Deer Park, and Tyler Edge from LaPorte. Both suspects were charged with aggravated robbery.

The other two suspects are still at large.

When it was over, Johnson realized he accidentally shot one of his friends, Raymond Hearne. Hearne was taken to Clear Lake Regional Hospital.

"He was complaining he couldn't feel his legs, he was moving them when the medic was asking. He was moving them, but a little worried because he couldn't feel them," Johnson said.

All of the other adults and children were unharmed.

Men Jailed for Assaulting Women in Video Gone Awry

FREEDOM, Pa. (AP)  (1-22-16)  - Police say the recording of a drug-themed music video went awry, leading to two women being pistol-whipped, one man being shot and two men under arrest.

Thirty-four-year-old Antonio Clinkscales, of Freedom, and 33-year-old Kmeene Hubbard, of Beaver Falls, are charged with aggravated assault.

Beaver County authorities say the men were shooting the video in a Freedom home on Jan. 15 when two women hired to appear in it began arguing with the men about stolen drugs.

Police say the men beat, choked and pistol-whipped the women and that one of the men fired the gun to scare them. Investigators say one of the women then wrestled with Clinkscales for the gun. During that struggle, authorities say, Hubbard was accidentally shot in the abdomen.

Court records don't list defense attorneys for the men. They face a Feb. 1 preliminary hearing.

Guns now No. 2 cause of accidental child death in county

A 4-year-old Harris County boy died after shooting himself in the head Tuesday, adding to a toll that's become the second leading cause of accidental death for children in Harris County.

Only motor vehicles account for a larger percentage of accidental deaths, according to Harris County Institute of Forensic Science statistics. Of the 1,074 minors who died in Harris County from 2011 to 2014, about 1 in 8 was killed by a gun, according to the data.

That's an average of 27 child fatalities by guns a year for that span.

Two minors have already died from accidental gunshots in 2016 - Bryson Hernandez, who shot himself in the head at his grandparents' Cypress-area home early Tuesday, and a 15-year-old who was shot by his older brother on Jan. 16 in southwest Houston.

In addition, a 2-year-old in Montgomery County shot himself in the hand after his father left a handgun he'd been cleaning out unattended on Jan. 3.

Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control coalition funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as part of a crusade against firearm violence and to politically challenge the National Rifle Association, tracks media reports about accidental shootings by children. Recently released data compiled by the organization shows that at least 265 minors unintentionally shot themselves or someone else in 2015, and 17 of those incidents were in Texas.

The group found that improper gun storage led to most of the unintended deaths. Two-thirds happened in a home or vehicle belonging to the victim's family and most often with legally owned guns that were not secured.

Child Protective Services officials are looking into how Bryson gained access to the firearm. Bryson's grandparents are cooperating with investigators fully, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The findings will be forwarded to a Harris County grand jury.

Adults can be prosecuted for making a firearm accessible to a child, a misdemeanor charge.

In a statement released through Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, relatives said they hoped Bryson's death would spur gun owners to take more precautions.

"Always check to make sure you know where your guns are and that they are safely out of reach of children, not loaded and locked away," the statement said.

Bryson, who was enthralled with the fearless and beneficent superhero Iron Man, will save the lives of other children as an organ donor. He will be laid to rest in his Iron Man costume.

Houston-area CPS spokeswoman Tiffani Butler said children should be taught not to touch guns. If minors encounter a weapon, they should know to leave the area and alert an adult.

She also provided these tips from the agency's Office of Child Safety as ways to prevent children from accessing a loaded gun:

Keep guns unloaded when not in use.

Don't store bullets and guns in the same place.

Use cable locks or trigger locks.

Use gun locks with combination, magnetic or electronic security, but not keys.

Store guns in a lock box, vault or safe.

Bryson's autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Friday.

Edmonton an charged with manslaughter after accidentally shooting woman instead of robbers

Edmonton, AB (1-22-16) An Edmonton man is charged with manslaughter after a woman happened to walk into an apartment as he shot at two home invaders.

Yvette Lydia Morin, 28, was shot dead on Dec. 12 in an apartment near 107th Avenue and 106th Street.

“(She) just walked in, very unfortunately, at the wrong time ... and she sustained the gunshot through a door that was probably meant for the other guys,” Edmonton police spokesman Scott Pattison said Friday.

Police say at around 10 p.m. Dec. 12, two men broke into the suite and demanded valuables from 53-year-old Donat Albert, who lived there.

The robbers ushered people who were in the basement apartment into a bedroom, Pattison said.

As the invaders were leaving, Albert allegedly found a hidden gun and shot at them through a doorway. Morin had just walked into the apartment, Pattison said.

“She was the unfortunate victim on the other side,” he said.

Police were initially told one of the robbers was responsible for the shooting, police said in a news release.

Paramedics took Morin to hospital, where she died a half hour later.

Albert is charged with manslaughter, careless storage of a firearm, and other criminal offences.

Johnny Jackknife, 34, and Jonathon Bass, 29, both of Edmonton, are charged with robbery and other unspecified charges.

Morin’s death was Edmonton’s 27th homicide of 2015.

Man faces misdemeanor charge after shooting family dog he mistook for a coyote

Onondaga, NY  (1-22-16)  A Warners man faces a misdemeanor charge for accidentally shooting a family dog that he mistook for a coyote in the Town of Onondaga late last year.

The dog that was shot was "Blue," an 8-year-old, female golden retriever/ pit bull mix, which was in her own yard at the time. The dog retreated into her home where its owners, Jody and Patricia Thivierge, called the Sheriff's Office. They took their dog to the DeWitt Animal Hospital where she was subsequently euthanized.

The case is currently being heard in the Town of Onondaga Court.

The incident occurred Dec. 10 on Amber Road in the Town of Onondaga. Ryan Impellizzieri, 29, of Warners, was visiting Matthew Slade, a friend of his on the street. He was helping Slade remodel a home he had recently bought.

At about 11 p.m., Impellizzieri heard what sounded like several coyotes in the backyard of his friend's house. Impellizzieri, who told sheriff's deputies he was a hunter, said he reached in his truck and grabbed his Remington Model 597 .22 magnum rifle and went into Slade's house.

"I wanted to make sure that Matt's two dogs and my dog were in the house and not outside in any danger," he said in his affidavit obtained from Town of Onondaga Court. "Matt, his fiancé and myself went out on the back deck. We could still hear the coyote calling."

Impellizzieri said the couple went back inside and he asked them to turn off the exterior light so he could better use a special light that was fastened to the top of his rifle. He looked around and saw nothing and went back in the house.

A short time later he went back outside and heard some rustling in the bushes where he had first heard the coyotes. He went back in the house to get his gun. Back out on the deck, he raised his firearm.

"With my rifle's green-colored light, I saw the two eyes in the same location where I had heard the coyote, " Impellizzieri said.

He fired one shot, estimating it was around 60 yards.

"I heard a loud yelp and then whatever I shot take off running towards the neighbors' house," Impellizzieri said. "At that very moment, I had a gut feeling that I had mistakenly shot someone's pet."

In his statement, Impellizzieri said he never would have shot someone's pet. "I feel terrible about what happened," he said.

Slade said everyone was shaken by the incident.

"It was an accident. Everyone knew it was an accident," he said. "I gave them (the neighbors) $1,000 that night. That was the least I could do. I couldn't imagine that happening to my dog. It was terrible."

In her affidavit, Patricia Thivierge, said Blue, who weighed a little more than 40 pounds, was let out that night to go to the bathroom.

"Blue was a beautiful soul. We miss her immensely," she said, sharing various pictures of the dog with syracuse.com, including a small shrine for Blue that her youngest son, Teddy, 11, made for Christmas.

The family has since gotten another dog – an 11-week-old, female English shepherd puppy. They named her Autumn.

Impellizzieri is charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of an occupied residence. According to the sheriff's report, he was 250 feet from the Thivierge's home at the time of the shooting

He was arraigned Wednesday evening in town court. He is due back in court Feb. 17, according to a court clerk.
