Boy, 11, seriously injured in Everett shooting; teen arrested

Everett, Wash. — (11-29-15)  An 11-year-old boy was in serious condition Sunday evening after what appears to be an accidental shooting by a teenage relative earlier that afternoon.
The 16-year-old who allegedly fired the gun has been arrested and is under investigation for reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is being booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center. Early information suggested he was the boy’s older brother but the sheriff’s office was unable to confirm that Sunday evening.
Initial reports are that the younger boy was shot in the face or head. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating. It’s unclear at this point who else may have been nearby at the time of the shooting or what kind of gun was fired.
Deputies responded to the 12400 block of Admiralty Way at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. They were told an unknown suspect had shot the boy and fled. A K-9 unit was sent out to help deputies track the shooter.
“In the process of conducting their search, they determined that it was the older sibling who had been involved, not an unknown subject,” Lt. David Bowman said.
The 11-year-old was taken to Harborview in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
The boy was in serious condition when medics reached the hospital with him, a Harborview nursing supervisor said. He remained in serious condition Sunday night.

Police, medics save man’s life after shooting at Columbia-area sportsmen's club

Columbia, PA (11-29-15)  Police and paramedics are being credited with saving the life of a 35-year-old Conestoga man who was accidentally wounded at a shooting range near Columbia on Thanksgiving Day.

The victim, whose name was being withheld by police Friday, underwent emergency surgery and was recovering in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Lancaster General Hospital.

The man was shot in the right leg shortly before noon on Thursday and was bleeding profusely. It could have been a life-threatening injury, said Josh Roberts, the operations manager for Susquehanna Valley EMS, whose medics responded to the call.

“If a large blood vessel is struck, it could quickly lead to death if not contained,” Roberts said. “It it had been another 10 minutes, we could have been looking at a worse outcome.”

West Hempfield Township police Chief Mark Pugliese credited first responders with saving the man’s life.

The shooting occurred at the Columbia Fish & Game Range, at 4339 Fairview Road, and several people sprang into action, officials said.

The victim’s friend immediately called 911, and West Hempfield Township police Officer James Gardill scrambled to the range and applied direct pressure to the gunshot wound on the man’s inner thigh, Roberts said.

Susquehanna Valley EMS Paramedic Scott Briggs, Emergency Medical Technician Cierra Carr and Roberts got there five or six minutes after being dispatched, Roberts said. EMTs Nathan Cramer and Brendan Gardill (Officer Gardill’s son) also arrived in a Columbia Quick Response Service unit to help.

Briggs applied a military-style tourniquet just below the groin and rapidly infused intravenous fluids to combat significant blood loss, Roberts said.

The shooting victim was able to maintain consciousness all the way to Lancaster General Hospital, Roberts said. No update on the man’s condition was available Friday.

Police have not released any other details about the shooting and said they are still investigating.

Sam Weigard, president of the Columbia Fish & Game Association, said the shooting occurred club’s outdoors pistol range. Club members have access to the range and can take guests to it.

Weigard said he does not know if the shooting victim is a club member.

“To my knowledge, this is the first accident of that type,” said Weigard , a club member for 15 years.

DA: Paradise officer’s shooting of suspect was accidental

Paradise, Cal.   (11-27-15)  A police officer’s shooting of a driving-under-the- influence suspect Thursday morning in Paradise was accidental, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey confirmed Friday afternoon.

The officer, Patrick Feaster, is a five-year veteran of the Paradise Police Department. Ramsey said Feaster told investigators he does not know why the gun, a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, discharged.

In a press release, Ramsey said the investigation was verified by an analysis of the officer’s dashboard camera in his patrol vehicle. The video, Ramsey said, shows the officer was not prepared for and was surprised by the gun’s discharge.

According to the release, Feaster had been at Foster and the Skyway Wednesday just before midnight when a Toyota 4Runner sped out of the parking lot of the Canteena bar without its headlights on, ran a red light at Skyway and Pearson Road, and headed eastward.

Feaster followed and saw the 4Runner hit the median at Black Olive Drive and roll. In the release, Ramsey said Feaster saw Darien Rayne Ehorn, 23, ejected from the car and land in the roadway. Ehorn died at the scene.

As he approached her, Andrew Nicholas Thomas, 26, began to exit the car, which was on its side.

In the release, Ramsey said Thomas was moving quickly and Feaster thought he was trying to escape.

“(Thomas) was coming up through the driver-side window,” Ramsey said on Thursday. “The officer un-holstered his weapon and fired one shot, and the man went back down.”

The bullet struck Thomas in the lower right neck. He is in critical condition at Enloe Medical Center in Chico.

Ramsey said they still have yet to determine who was driving that evening. They are looking for anyone who may have seen who was driving the vehicle as it left the Canteena on the Skyway that night.

Ramsey said Feaster has been cooperative during the investigation but was “clearly shaken” by the shooting. He was placed on administrative leave.

Boy, 5, accidentally shoots himself

A 5-year-old boy is expected to recover after shooting himself in the leg Thursday night with a handgun he found in an apartment he is living in with his mother and her boyfriend.

BALTIC (11-27-15)   A 5-year-old boy is expected to recover after shooting himself in the leg Thursday night with a handgun he found in an apartment he is living in with his mother and her boyfriend.

The boyfriend, 27-year-old Adam D. Bays, of Baltic, was arrested Thursday night and is being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail on child endangering charges.

Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Orvis Campbell said deputies received a call at 6:55 p.m. Thursday night of an accidental shooting at the apartment complex at 102 Baltic Haus Drive.

He said the boy discovered a 9mm Ruger on a dresser, picked it up and unintentionally shot himself in his groin. The bullet passed through the boy’s leg and came to rest under a dresser in a bedroom.
The boy was responsive with Sugarcreek EMS personnel and was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery Thursday night.

Campbell said the boy is in good condition and is expected to recover from his injuries that caused minor damage.

Bays claimed the gun was locked up, but Campbell said there was no evidence of a lock to the gun cabinet and his story conflicts with how the boy said he was able to take possession of the gun. Deputies also seized multiple other guns from the apartment.

Campbell said Bays has no known criminal record and has a conceal-carry permit issued out of Holmes County. The permit was confiscated and will be returned to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff records show that in June while investigating an unrelated call, deputies discovered a loaded gun in the living room of the home and ordered Bays to lock it up.

Children Services was notified of the situation, and other children living in the home were given temporary placement with a relative. The agency also was made aware of unsanitary conditions in the apartment.

Bays likely will be held in jail until Monday, Campbell said, when a charge of third-degree felony child endangering is expected.

Uniontown teen charged in shooting of friend

Uniontown, Pa.  (11-26-15)  A Uniontown teenager was charged by city police with aggravated assault and placed in the Fayette County Jail on Wednesday for allegedly shooting a friend in the city's Pershing Court housing complex.
Amar Daeshawn Chisler, 17, told police the shooting was accidental, according to a criminal complaint.
He was arraigned before District Judge Michael M. Metros on additional charges of reckless endangerment, simple assault and possession of a firearm by a minor, according to court records.
In an affidavit of probable cause, Uniontown Detective Donald Gmitter stated that police were called to a Pershing Court residence at 12:31 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a male with a gunshot to the head.
Police identified that person as Dametrious Addison, 18, of Pittsburgh, who was flown to Ruby Memorial Medical Center in Morgantown, W.Va., for medical treatment.
His condition could not be obtained on Thursday.
Gmitter said he observed a blood-soaked mattress and carpet in an upstairs bedroom, and a .38 Special revolver on a nightstand.
Gmitter said that in an interview, Chisler said that he and several friends, including Addison, were “hanging out” together and that “Meech” had a gun, which he placed on the bed.
“Amar stated that he doesn't like guns, so he used a paper towel or napkin to pick up the gun and move it. When Amar picked up the gun, he stated that it ‘went off.' Amar threw the gun onto a nightstand and began to render aid (to Addison),” Gmitter wrote in the affidavit.
Chisler was transported to the city police station for questioning, where he admitted shooting his friend and stating that it was an accident, according to the affidavit.
According to Gmitter, a Fayette EMS first responder who tended to Addison asked him who shot him.
“He said, ‘It was my friend,' ” Gmitter wrote in the affidavit.
Metros set Chisler's bail at $35,000.
He faces a preliminary hearing Dec. 22 before Metros.
In 2012, a man whom Uniontown police identified as Chisler's brother, Ramal O. Chisler, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and carrying a firearm without a license in a similar incident.
Chisler, now 21, was 16 when he was charged as an adult in the Sept. 16, 2010, shooting death of Tiffany Moody, 17, also in a Pershing Court apartment.
According to Chisler's statements during a plea hearing, he was dismantling a handgun when it discharged unexpectedly, accidentally firing a bullet into Moody's upper left abdomen.
Ramal Chisler told police that he was dismantling the handgun because Moody did not like firearms, but her family disputed that claim.
A sister, Jennifer Moody-Garrison, said their father, a hunter, taught them how to handle firearms properly as they were growing up.
Fayette County Judge Nancy Vernon sentenced Ramal Chisler to a term of six to 12 years in prison.
He remains in custody in the State Correctional Institution at Somerset.

The family was preparing a Thanksgiving dinner and then late this afternoon, a man the homeowner knew showed up at the house with a gun and killed him, and then killed himself, either accidentally or committed suicide.

This happened on Rosemary Lane, at the end of a subdivision street. The rest of the victim’s family watched it all happen.

Police say Charles Richard Newman, who went by Rick, answered the door at his home and Milton Jarvis came in at about 4 p.m. Thursday.

The two knew each other, but the sheriff says he’s not sure how they knew each other.

They began arguing.

“There was some type of struggle,” said Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp. “A firearm was involved, and both died from gunshot wounds, we only found one weapon.”

It’s not clear if Jarvis, who deputies say pulled the gun, then committed suicide or accidentally shot himself. One handgun was recovered at the home.

Eddie Stacks, a brother in law of victim Rick Newman, has learned from Newman’s son what had happened.

“Then he told us that a guy came to the house, shot his dad, and then shot himself and that is basically all we know,” said Stacks.

No one else was involved in the shooting, but there were other people in the home: a family, all gathered together for a Thanksgiving dinner.

“We couldn’t believe it because we was having thanksgiving dinner you know when we got the call. He was just a good guy, he was just an all around good guy, he would help anybody that needed anything, he would try to help them with whatever he could help them with you know.”

This is the first homicide in Heath this year, Thorp said.

Earlier this week, three people were killed in Columbus when a neighbor came into their house and shot a father, a mother, and a young son.

Police: Man shot in legs by car passenger charged for accusing fabricated black male suspects
Both men were booked Wednesday in the Johnson County Jail     Mitchell Schmidt The Gazette

Iowa City,  Iowa — (11-26-15)   Police say two Eastern Iowa men face charges after one man accidentally shot the other in the legs.

According to Iowa City Police Department criminal complaints, at about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 1 in Johnson County, Sergio Martinez, 19, of Iowa City, was driving with 21-year-old West Branch resident Jonathan Aragon Salas riding in the passenger seat. The two men had a handgun with them, police say.

While inside the car, Aragon Salas removed the handgun’s magazine and pointed the gun down at Martinez’s legs, with a round still in the chamber, according to police.

Police say when Aragon Salas pulled the trigger, the gun fired and the bullet traveled through both of Martinez’s legs.

Shortly after the incident, Martinez arrived at Mercy Iowa City with gunshot wounds in both legs. When asked by police, Martinez said he was walking through a southside Iowa City apartment complex when he was randomly shot multiple times by black males he didn’t recognize, according to police.

Police say Martinez’s false report forced police to call in several off-duty officers in an effort to locate a shooter believed to be at large in the community.

An investigation found it was Aragon Salas who shot Martinez, police say.

Both men were booked Wednesday in the Johnson County Jail, where they remained in custody Thursday morning.

Aragon Salas has been charged with reckless use of a firearm, a Class C felony, while Martinez faces a serious misdemeanor charge for a false report of indictable offense to police.

One arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm

Stockton, Cal.  (11-20-15)  A Stockton man was arrested Thursday morning by Yolo County sheriff’s deputies for negligent discharge of a firearm.

The Sheriff’s Department reported on its Facebook page that two vehicles were involved in a “road rage incident” on northbound Interstate-5 around 10 a.m. as they passed through the Woodland area.

A short time after passing past Woodland, the drivers of the respective vehicles stopped at the Zamora Mini-Mart started shouting at one another.

That argument led to one of the people pulling out a handgun and firing a shot in the air.

That got the attention of people at the mini-mart, who notified authorities and dispatched law enforcement officers to the scene.

The suspect fled the scene but was located and detained by the California Highway Patrol on I-5 in the Arbuckle area.

Sheriff’s deputies also responded and placed Robert Banbury, 28, of Stockton, under arrest. Banbury was taken to the Yolo County Jail where he was booked on charges including brandishing and negligently discharging a firearm.

The victim, a 17-year-old female, was taken to the hospital for treatment

Mint Hill police have charged five teens in a violent sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl, police said Friday.

Just after noon on Thursday, officers responded to the 4900 block of Stoney Trace Drive for a report of a naked female lying in the grass. Officials say they found a 17-year-old girl with apparent signs of violent sexual assault.

The victim was taken to Novant Hospital in Charlotte for medical treatment. Her condition has not been released.

The names of the juveniles and the victim are not being released.

Roman, Reyes and the two 15-year-old boys are charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense, assault by strangulation inflicting physical injury and three counts of felony conspiracy. Garcia is charged with three counts of felony conspiracy.
