Boy Dies in Birthday Party Shooting

San Antonio, Tx   (9-23-15)  Police aren't sure whether a shooting at a birthday party on the city's west side at midday was intentional, or an accident.
But what they do know is a 16 year old boy is dead, and another 16 year old is being questioned.
"They celebrated the birthday last night, apparently they spent the night and at some point this morning they were playing with a gun," Sgt. Javier Salazar said.
Police were called to an apartment complex at Hamilton and Ceralvo about 11:30 this morning on a report of a shooting.  When they arrived, they say the  boy was already dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
"The suspect pointed the gun at the victim's head and pulled the trigger," he said.  We are trying to determine what the suspect's intent was, and if he knew the gun was loaded."

Lake Placid mayor: Young child accidentally shot mother
Lake Placid, NY   (9-22-15)  Police in Lake Placid are investigating an accidental shooting.
A mother was hospitalized after a gun got into her child's hands. It happened at about 9 a.m. at an apartment complex off Miller Drive in Lake Placid.
Police wouldn't say who the shooter or victim are, but Lake Placid Mayor Craig Randall says it was a 3-year-old child who accidentally shot his mother. He said the woman was home with two young children when the gun went off.
Police say they got a call Tuesday morning about a person with a gunshot wound. They say a resident was accidentally shot while at home in an apartment building off Miller Drive. The victim was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center and is in stable condition.
"It appears to be an automatic handgun left loaded in a place where it shouldn't have been," Lake Placid Police Chief William Moore said.
Police say they are confident the shooting was an accident. The mayor agrees, given how young the child is.
The mother is in stable condition. Police say she was shot somewhere in her back and they say charges could be filed in the case.
Lake Placid and New York State police are continuing the investigation

Slain Pa. trooper's family files suit against firearms instructor
Plymouth Township, Pa  (9-22-15)  A state police firearms instructor who accidentally shot and killed a fellow trooper is now facing a civil suit filed in U.S. District Court by the trooper's family.
Nearly a year ago, on Sept. 30, Richard Schroeter, was demonstrating a handgun for a class in Plymouth Township when he pointed the muzzle at Trooper David Kedra and squeezed the trigger. A bullet was in the chamber. Kedra, 26, later died of a gunshot wound to his abdomen at Temple University Hospital.
Schroeter, a 23-year veteran of the force who retired shortly after the incident, was not charged with manslaughter. He took responsibility for the shooting and pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment. The 43-year-old former trooper was sentenced last month to two weeks in jail and up to 18 months of house arrest.
Kedra's family took the sentence as a slap in the face.
"Two weeks? My brother's life is worth two weeks?" Kedra's sister Christine shouted at the prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Samantha Cauffman, outside the Montgomery County courtroom after Schroeter was sentenced.
The suit contends that as an instructor, Schroeter was well acquainted with firearm safety rules on Sept. 30, 2014, the day of the shooting. According to the suit, Schroeter's critical violations included failing to conduct a proper safety check before using the handgun for training purposes, failing to determine if the gun was loaded, pointing the firearm at another person, and failing to keep his finger off the weapon's trigger unless firing at a safe target.

(2 wounded) Gunskilltoo Sept 22rd; Little girl shoots her sister.

I had a reply to a comment I'd posted on a pro-gun video.   I thought about sharing it here, but it would have been highlighting the stupidity of the reply...and that's just mean.

So an 11 year old shoots her 13 year old sister accidently.   It is sadly true many won't understand until they hold a dead child.  If you have guns in the house, the odds are much stronger one of your family will be shot than an intruder.  But some lessons are only learned by blood.

13-year-old Ogden girl accidentally shot by little sister

Ogden, Utah (AP) — (9-21-15)   A 13-year-old girl is recovering after she was accidentally shot in the neck by her 11-year-old sister in Ogden.
The Ogden City Police Department says the younger girl accidentally fired a .22 caliber revolver Sunday. She found the weapon in their grandparents' bedroom while cleaning.
Ogden Police Lt. Jake Sube says a bullet struck the 13-year-old in the neck but didn't hit any vital organs. He says she has been hospitalized and will likely have surgery to remove the bullet.
He described her as having a "very positive attitude."
Sube says the elderly grandparents probably had not used the gun in many years and forgot it was in the bedroom.
No arrests were made Sunday. Police say the investigation is ongoing

( 7 wounded/ 1 dead) Gunskilltoo Sept 16th; Shot self taking a selfie

Eight more accidental shootings in today's news

In the course of searching I also look up instances of guns used in home defense.   In August and September there were 6 or 8 that I found.   Accidental shootings happen nearly every day, averaging 3 to 6 I'd guess as of now.  Defenses happen once a week, if that.

Please comment to this blog, Accidents Happen Guns Kill if you like.   Post defenses.   But when researching, confirm stories with actual news reports.   Political sites don't count and I won't allow them.   No propaganda.  This site is about information.  I may write the opinion happen I think it's horrible that the propaganda campaign of the gun industry and NRA (who receives a % of gun sales) results in dead kids.  But  that isn't propaganda.

Mesa County investigators ID hunter who killed boy in national forest
Justin Burns, of Palisade, died after being shot in the chest at Big Creek Reservoir

Mesa County, AZ  (9-15-15)  Mesa County authorities say they have identified the person who fatally shot a 14-year-old boy Sunday morning on national forest land as a licensed hunter.

The county sheriff's office, however, declined to release the hunter's name, citing an investigation into the slaying.

Authorities say they are investigating the shooting as an "incident" and that they have not definitively determined if the shooting was accidental.

"The course of the investigation will determine (the nature of the shooting) in further detail," Heather Benjamin, a sheriff's office spokeswoman, said Tuesday.

Justin Burns, of Palisade, died of a gunshot wound to his chest at Big Creek Reservoir in the Uncompahgre National Forest, the county coroner's office said. Justin was bow hunting with his father when he was shot, the sheriff's office said.

Benjamin said the U.S. Forest Service is assisting in the investigation.

Justin's death has been ruled a homicide.

"The shooter is and has been in contact with investigators," Benjamin said.

Recreational shooting on national forest land in Colorado has come under intense scrutiny since the July slaying of Glenn Martin, 60, who was shot by an apparently errant bullet in the Pike National Forest.
